Let's travel together #322 - Letná Park (Letenské sady)

As nostalgia is hitting quite hard lately while getting through the folders of my previous trips, I thought that for today's travel article, I'd pick the very last place I and my friends seen while in Czech Republic, before heading to the airport.

That one was Letná Park, which was sort of in the middle distance between our accommodation and the airport. Since our flight was quite late but we still needed to check out pretty early in the morning, we were looking for a place where we could spend a couple of hours with our luggage around and possibly eat something.

We had no clue there was the possibility of eating something in the park so we did stop on the way there to a supermarket and got some snacks, thinking that it's already good enough to have a nice and safe space where to spend a while, with a nice view in front of us.

Anyway, until we enjoyed this view, a long walk of a few kilometres waited for us. And since it was the last few hours before heading home, we really wanted to enjoy all these moments even if it turned into a really exhausting walk that was twice harder than usual due to the big and heavy backpacks we had to carry all the way there.

I'm not complaining about it as in fact, it was our own decision but it would feel like a loss to reach this place in just a few minutes and skip all the beauty we met on the way. It was the first time we were exploring this part of the city also, so we were all in for a new adventure even on the last hundred of meters from our trip in Prague.

Even if the park was quite welcoming from the start, with lots of benches and places to rest and not many people around, we knew from the internet that the best was yet to come, so we kept walking for a bit longer until reaching a completely different world, which, somehow, was still in the same place.

The place I'm talking about is known as the Beer Garden just because a lot of people use this place to hang out on a beer and socialize, but after spending some good hours in that place I can say that it's a lot more than that, and obviously, not "just another park".

A quite large part of the park is dedicated to tens of wooden tables and benches that would make everyone find a spot where to hang out for a while. Only the lucky ones will get one of these tables placed right on the edge of the hill that offers a clear view over Prague, but even if you don't get one of these, the view can still be admired from a further distance, which was also our situation.

Even if the view was asking us to get closer and admire everything, we knew that we had enough time for everything so we decided to grab some food first. There was a proper restaurant nearby but we checked out the menu and didn't seem too interesting for us, so we opted for the single food truck nearby that was there during our visit.

If you visit Letná Park during the summer, I bet you find more options to pick from, but since we had our trip off-season (September, 2023), there was a single food truck which didn't come with too many options. Either way, we really enjoyed the french fries and chicken breast which was amongst the most tasty meals we had in Prague.

There were two more trucks around but with either coffee, beer, or drinks in general. I took some pictures with the prices and menus to check out with my friends, but I'll attach them below as maybe they are helpful for some of you.

The food we all opted for was the Grilled Chicken, French Fries and 0.5L of Coke. However, now looking back at the menu, the fried mini mozzarella sounds quite interesting too.

After filling our bellies with tasty food, some of us took a short 2-minute walk until making it to the path we followed before reaching the Beer Garden which was a paved one, but asked for some hiking in order to reach this place.

The name of Letná Park comes from the name of the hill this is placed on, which is Letná and with such a view in front of you makes sense why you barely spot anyone in the rest of the park when the best part of it seems like being on top of the hill.

During the summer there are a lot more activities one can enjoy such as hiking, skateboarding, picnics and other outdoor activities. There are even local concerts being held, or even some famous ones, remembering about Michael Jackson's concert on September 7, 1996, which over 130,000 people attended.

The last event that took place nearby which has nothing to do with how peaceful everything is in 2024, happened on June 23, 2019, when more than 250,000 people gathered on the Letná plain, to ask the Prime Minister to resign amid allegations of conflict of interest and criminal fraud.
A long while ago this specific part of the park was used for the first military camps that were located there due to their strategic location that would offer a good view over Vltava River and a good part of the city.
Anyway, as time passed and evolution was part of the overall process, nowadays the Letná Park is used more as an area of recreation, outdoor sports and leisure, hence why, despite the crowds you will run into when visiting it, you will be welcomed with silence, lots of people chilling, and really no one to disturb you from having a good time even if it's alone or accompanied by friends.
If I have to be honest, I'm not sure if I'd visit the park alone unless the Beer Garden was part of it as that's pretty much what makes it so unique from the others and definitely a first thing for me.
But even so, it's a very chill location to visit no matter the time of the year. And the Beer Garden is located on the eastern side of the park which makes it very accessible no matter where you are coming from.

Even if we had four days full of adventure in Prague that began early in the morning and ended up, more or less, in the evening after lots of places visited, I strongly feel like Letná Park is the best space where to let the time pass.

I might be wrong, but I can't think of any other outdoor spot in Prague that compares to the energy we felt in this place. The relaxing atmosphere and the outstanding scenery created a great sweet combination. Which was exactly what we needed before making it to the airport.

The official address of Letná Park (Letenské sady) is Letná, 170 00 Prague 7, Czechia and being such a large park there are, literally, lots of ways to reach it, from pretty much all sides of the hill and city as well.

The quickest way is to take a tram ride to the side or back of the park on Sparta or Chotkovy sady stops, the park being just across the street which will also save some time from hiking the whole hill. From the Chotkovy sady you can reach very easily the Hanavský Pavilion which we have missed during our trip, but which is definitely worth a visit. After that, you can reach the Beer Garden pretty quickly from that spot.

For a longer adventure, begin your walk from the castle's Royal Gardens near the north entrance. Make it through the gardens to the east away from the castle and you will eventually come to the beautiful Queen Anne's Summer Palace from where you will cross a sidewalk bridge that takes you straight into the Letná Park.

Glad to know that you enjoyed your time at Letna :) It´s a cool place. Usually a bit too crowded for my liking but still cool for sure :)

happy days yes? always a treat to see your adventures.

When it comes to food I always trust a place with a minamiliast menu above one that has a ridiculous amount of options. less is more!
That chicken looks yummy, my choice too with the fries and a portion of the jalapeños just to wake the taste buds up!

We are the same here!! That's why we went all in for the food truck rather than the restaurant. I have no doubt the food is delicious there too but just as you said, we also had more trust in that food truck. I'd visit Prague one day just for the sake of reviving all these memories with another alike menu!! :)

I love the view of the city and the photo of the river is amazing. I think it's a good idea to use the last hours of the trip in a place like this, I also think that exhaustion can be solved while at home haha when traveling you have to make the most of every moment. What fun to travel with friends, I love to move alone, but from time to time this is very energizing.

I am quite the opposite. I feel weird to travel alone so I try to always be accompanied by either friends or family haha. But yeah, spending time with such a view before returning home feels like the best ending for a trip 💛
