Celebrando el Año Nuevo Chino// Celebrating Chinese New Year ESP/ENG
Today, as I had mentioned in yesterday's post, Getting Ready for Chinese New Year : Shopping at an Asian Grocery Store, I was invited to a Chinese New Year celebration. This reception was organized by my friends Joy and Bob Simons. For this occasion, they invited several of their Chinese and American friends, and this Venezuelan. It was an extraordinary experience since it allowed me to learn more about a culture that until recently seemed so alien and distant to me; in addition, I was able to enjoy a delicious meal prepared by the hosts. In this post, I will give you a brief description of the festivity and I will explain in detail how the celebration took place at the Simmons' house yesterday in Kent.
First of all, it should be explained why the Chinese do not celebrate New Year's Day on January 1 as we, Westerners, do. The reason is that they use the lunisolar calendar to set the dates of their most important festivities. The lunisolar calendar measures time according to the position of the Sun and the Moon. This calendar sets the beginning of the new year the day of the second moon after the winter solstice. So, according to this calendar, New Year's day falls between late January and mid-February. This year, the Chinese New Year will be celebrated on February 1. In addition, each year is represented by an animal of the Asian horoscope. 2022 is the year of the Water Tiger, which is a symbol of strength and courage. This is a two-week celebration, in which Chinese families prepare special meals, dine together, decorate their homes and attend parades and festivals.

Our Celebration
As for our celebration, it started at two in the afternoon and lasted past nine in the evening. With games, conversations, photo sessions and lots of delicious food, the time went smoothly. When I arrived to the house, I was warmly welcomed by Balie, one of the family's dog, with a stuffed animal and some slippers. He is so cute and generous. I love him. Coco, the other dog, welcomed me with his special outfit for the occasion.
The first thing I want to highlight is the decoration in red and golden tones. One of the most used accessories were the red lanterns. Lanterns in Chinese culture represent the wish for a better future, prosperity, wealth and good luck.
It is also customary to hang New Year's sayings or couplets written in black calligraphy on both sides of the door. These messages express best wishes, abundance, happiness and prosperity for the new year.
It is also customary to use paper cuttings with figures that express luck and happiness. These figures are red in color and are placed mainly on doors and windows.
On this holiday it is traditional to prepare typical dishes such as jiaozi (Chinese ravioli or dumplings). Here we see Joy, Bob and two Chinese friends preparing the dumplings. I also made some.
Chinese people get together with their families for dinner, the Simons gathered a group of friends to enjoy the delicious meals they prepared. These meals included baked fish, rice, sautéed chicken with peppers, chicken with broccoli, dumplings, vegetables, noodles, spring rolls and the famous sweet rice balls called Tanyuan.
As 2022 is the year of the Tiger, people will decorate their houses with images of this animal. In our party, our hosts wore customes of tigers and posed for numerous photos.
Most of the afternoon was spent between meals, table games, good conversations and a tasty bubble tea prepared by Joy.
