Bill Laurance co-writes his own project The Fix, an electronic duo, and debuted with Flint (2014) playing contemporary jazz for Michael League’s GroundUpmusic label, followed by Swift (2015), both praised for his deft musicianship and emotive writing and arrangement. In 2015 he was awarded by the UK digital radio station Jazz FM as ‘Breakthrough Act of the Year’. In 2016 he released Aftersun (2016), a rhythmic and funk-infused album featuring League, Snarky Puppy percussionist Robert “Sput” Searight and New Orleans percussionist Weedie Braimah; and Live at Union Chapel, recorded at the church where he had played organ as a boy, playing jazz on his own.

These four albums reached first place on the iTunes Jazz charts of the United States and the United Kingdom. Also in 2016 Laurance collaborated in Oracles by alternative folk singer and songwriter Ana Silvera and in Song of Lahore playing jazz with The Sachal Ensemble. In 2017 the online magazine UdiscoverMusic included Live at Union Chapel in its list of ‘The 50 Greatest Live Jazz Albums’ of that year. In 2018 he played with the WDR Big Band of Cologne in a concert at the Southbank’s Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, and another one at the Kölner Philharmonie in Cologne with nine of his pieces arranged by bandleader Bob Mintzer, which was registered in Live At The Philharmonie Cologne (2019).

In 2019 Laurance created the Flint Music label and launched Cables, in which he plays all the instruments. The album is inspired by technology and science fiction, with one of the tracks dedicated to the supercomputer HAL 9000 appearing in Stanley Kubrick’s movie 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), another to the Cassini-Huygens space mission, whose purpose was to study the planet Saturn and its natural satellites, and another to the risks of climate change. Laurence did the electronic effects and piano processing along with engineer Nic Hard, with whom he produced the project.
