Under the weather

My almost-drowned market stand

Yesterday, The Husband wasn't the only one under the weather. In the real sense of the word. That was my stand, with dear Cecil taking shelter - about an hour into the market.

Yes, we anticipated rain, but not the deluge that arrived. My weather app must be one of the most consulted on my phone. It helps with scheduling washing day (no, we don't have a dryer and plan never to have another again) as well as for helping with menu planning - for us and, more importantly - for the market.

The weekly offering in the jar.

Chickpea and cauliflower curry

I chose this week's chickpea and cauliflower curry especially because it's a meal that can be served either cold or hot.

During Friday night, and early into Saturday morning, I listened to the rain and remembered that the app had said that the rain would be done by around 7am. When I arrived in the kitchen at 6, it was still pouring, but when I went back upstairs for a cuppa with The Husband, it had stopped. A close inspection of, firstly, the sky, and secondly, the weather gods app, suggested that we should take the gazebo but that we probably wouldn't need it.

Usually, 60% probability or less means McGregor doesn't get rain.
Much. Worth running from. All I can say is that the weather gods app lied. Not only did the rain abate at around 2pm, but the heavens opened.

That was after the heaviest downpour had abated and my friend, S was packing up her stall.

B&B always share their stand with F who makes the world's best samosas pronounced samoosa. She'd left by the time the rain had mostly stopped and I stepped out from under cover to take a few snaps. R, whose table is also in the picture, was also packing up.

By the time I took this picture, it really was just the diehards sticking it out . Thanks to trusty regulars and to a couple of visitors who braved the weather, we all had at least one sale. Happily I had a few more than that, but nothing really worth writing home about.

Hahaha! So why am I writing a post about it?

Ahem, well, for two reasons:

Between around 8am, when we left for the market and returned home around 11.30am, 20mm of rain fell. As awful as The Husband was feeling, he still measured the rain...

Secondly, my friend, J, who's car you can see just in front of Cecil, and who started the market, says that this is the first time in 21 - yes - twenty one years, that it's been entirely washed out. And no, we can't use the church hall. We've been down that road, and just. No. It's a lost cause. It may have taken a while, but J and I (mostly) know which battles to pick.

Until next time, be well

If this post might seem familiar, it's because I'm doing two things:

  • re-vamping old recipes. As I do this, I am adding them in a file format that you can download and print. If you download recipes, buy me a coffee. Or better yet, a glass of wine....?
  • and "re-capturing" nearly two years' worth of posts.
I blog to the Hive blockchain using a number of decentralised appplications.
  • From Wordpress, I use the Exxp Wordpress plugin. If this rocks your socks, click here or on on the image below to sign up.

A lovely and sunny morning today as we travelled back from a hospital in Bellville, but right now, cooling down with clouds covering the sky.
I think that we are in for rain again.

Rain gods came down on you without your gumboots ready, wish we had some of late.

All weather apps give different stories, I agree when it hits 80% certainty you may get 80 drops...., yet here you are drenched!

Church hall being a no, no in small community is most unusual, assumption there is no town hall being a very small town up in the mountains.

You sold one more than most, rain season has arrived for the Cape 20mm, is a decent amount for soil to drink it up.

On the contrary, politics in small communities are worse than in the city. There is a community hall, but not only is the location awkward, the municipality charges a fortune to use it. So, brave the rain, we must!

Things sure have changed over the years, town hall was normally made available for exactly this type of event at no charge being for the community. Our town hall burnt down years ago, they simply never replaced the one in Warner Beach. Amanzimtoti town hall is collapsing and nothing is being done about that either.

Well, hello! You made a few sales! I would have to say that you have some die-hard customers who don't want to cook this week! I know you are happy about the rain, although the pouring down rain is another thing. I hope you can stick them in the freezer and use them again next week, or have them for your own night off.

Too bad about the Church Hall! They must have had a bad experience once upon a time with someone else.

Once in twenty-one years!!!??? No kidding! That is pretty phenomenal! Thanks always to have you in #MarketFriday!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world. Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

1.Go to any type of market, or anywhere where you pay money for a service. It can be a museum, a movie theatre, or an auction. Be creative!
2.Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? We like to compare prices, otherwise, it is just pictures of a market!
3.Post the pictures! No out-of-focus ones, please! Tell a little bit about the pictures that you post. Having many pictures to scroll through does not make a better post without explanation.
4.Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post #hive-196308 (this is not required, but appreciated) If you don't, then #MarketFriday should be your first tag
5.Following me and reblogging the post so more see it would be appreciated !! Not a rule, just appreciated, more vision for more views on your posts!
. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post.
6.#MarketFriday post should be submitted sometime on Friday UTC
7.The post MUST be in English
8.Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it
