One of the fastest growing epidemic that has not yet been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO) is the issue of depression.
To me, the issue of depression spreads faster than the covid-19 pandemic and kills silently like cancer without much notice. This is how I could express that point.

An estimated 3.8% of the population experience depression, including 5% of adults (4% among men and 6% among women), and 5.7% of adults older than 60 years. Approximately 280 million people in the world have depression. Depression is about 50% more common among women than among men. Worldwide, more than 10% of pregnant women and women who have just given birth experience depression. More than 700 000 people die due to suicide every year. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in 15–29-year-olds.
Although there are known, effective treatments for mental disorders, more than 75% of people in low- and middle-income countries receive no treatment. Barriers to effective care include a lack of investment in mental health care, lack of trained health-care providers and social stigma associated with mental disorders.
One bad thing about the increasing rate of depression is that the economy of most countries (low income countries) are dwindling as the day goes by and the tendencies of economic recovery is very low.
When people don't have comfortable lives, they tend to get depressed, although, with researches in these areas, it has been discovered that even rich people get depressed. This means there are other factors that causes depression in human whether rich or poor.
In other climes, depression is caused by emotional trauma and disappointments. Young people today suffer depression and this has led to incessant shootings in the US and other parts of the world in recent times.
How to overcome depression?
- know that you're getting depressed. One of the challenges facing most people that are depressed is the fact that most of them don't know that they're depressed. They tend to realize this when it's already late. There's one thing that knowledge does and that is it helps you get solution faster.
- talk to someone. Taking to someone you trust when you're depressed is key to getting you out of that depressed state. Talking to someone relieves the burden from you. You can talk to a professional psychologist or to a counselor who will help direct you to the right path.
- forget about the past and focus on the future. Most depressions are caused by past experiences they weren't favorable to the depressed person. The past on its own has a way of limiting someone. Past relationships, achievements and successes. Once you see a brighter future and focus on it you'll quickly overcome depression.
