My opinion about Sonic the hedgehog 2 is 10/10.

When you think of an adaptation of a game to the big screen, what comes to mind? For me, movies like Prince of Persia, Resident Evil or Detective Pikachu come to mind, and these movies were true works of art and were the best movie adaptations I have ever seen.

But unfortunately there are also other adaptations that, in a shameful way, degraded the story of the video game and even made it look silly or meaningless, of these bad adaptations we can highlight DOOM, Need For Speed or Mario Bros of the 80's that appreciates a movie for another audience that is not the child.

In any case, getting a good movie that is an adaptation of a video game is something complicated, since the public has an expectation about something they have played hundreds of times and the movie is supposed to explore the same story or something else. But many times directors want to do something totally new with the name of the game and it ends up being a resounding failure.

But if we talk about the movie adaptation of the blue hedgehog the story changes, since so far 2 movies have been released and they have been quite acceptable, but without showing strictly the story of the video game.

As we know The video game created by SEGA Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is about a blue Hedgehog that travels through worlds and collect rings, rewards, which will allow the character to get improvements for his game and to unlock other characters. As well as defeating the main villain Dr. Eggman. Now imagine if they had released a movie of a blue hedgehog running mazes and collecting rings, it would be boring, so they had to rewrite a complete story, but based on features of the video game, and the truth was very successful.

The first installment of Sonic, presents the beginning of Sonic and the discovery of his powers, we are also introduced to the charismatic villain Dr. Eggman played by a heavyweight in comedy Jim Carrey, and the second installment of Sonic is almost a year after the first part.

Eggman is still trapped on the mushroom planet, but as he is a brilliant scientist he manages to emit a signal with a Sonic spike, this calls for a new character another hedgehog, but red in color called Knuckles, who plans to take Sonic down as Sonic has a purpose to fulfill. Sonic now tries to be a vigilante around the city trying to stop criminals, but since he is inexperienced he always makes a mess. Now into the plot also enters another new character named Tilas, a two-tailed alien fox who is fast and can fly like a helicopter.

The plot of the movie unfolds, as Eggman and Knuckles try to find the supreme emerald, a gem that gives the bearer absolute power, Eggman wants it for his machine plans and Knuckles to defeat the hedgehog and reestablish his destiny as an echidna. This is a journey loaded with lots of laughs, movie references, parodies, tense moments and lots of fun. In addition, iconic characters appear as is the case of Shemar Moore, the most acclaimed character of Criminal Minds, who also plays an agent in this film, so it is a good reference. The movie has a good ending, let's say an epic ending as Sonic gets the supreme power and looks like a super saiyajin.

Why was Sonic 2 such an excellent movie?

In my opinion, because it knows how to combine very well 3 essential things in a movie for all audiences, such as comedy, an iconic video game character and an impacting story.

The comedy: As I said before, the movie is loaded with scenes with a lot of comedy, and it is pure and excellent comedy, for example, when Sonic's human parents go on vacation, Sonic has a party like every kid and it reminded me a lot of the movie Home Alone.

Also when they were in search of the emerald and arrived in Siberia where they almost got killed, they had to face a tough and muscular guy through a dance, this was funny because you might think they were going to fight, but everything was solved on the dance floor in the style of Footloose.

And another funny scene is when Sonic was in saiyajin mode and everyone thought he had been corrupted by the great power of the gems, but he was still Sonic because with the power of the gems he asked for a super hot dog.

An iconic character of video games: Sonic is undoubtedly an extremely important character of popular culture, in fact, he is more famous than Mickey Mouse, and being so famous he is remembered by different generations who grew up playing his games. And because you can still play these games he is a character that reaches all ages, from 40 year old adults to 10 year old children.

Impactful story: Sonic's story both the first movie and the second, has a pretty interesting story, a hero searching for his place while facing a cruel villain and trying to save those he loves. This plot has always worked in the world of super heroes such as Superman and Spider-Man.

But with Sonic it goes further, as Sonic was customized to a greater scope for example he was given a family, a greater purpose than just collecting rings, he has a conscience that makes decisions about things and demonstrates his power in a way that in video games we might not see.

Also, the appearance of new characters gives more life to the movie, and it looks like it is a story that will have a third installment, since at the end of Sonic 2 Eggman disappears and a new villain that has been on earth for years is revealed, so the third installment of Sonic will be even better.

Because of these 3 strong points, I consider the Sonic movie to be the best adaptation of the video games to the big screen, plus I really enjoyed seeing how this character is developing.
