Strongest geomagnetic storm

For two days, on May 11 and 12, 2024, the strongest magnetic storm in many years raged in the sky throughout the country, and in many other countries. The northern lights were visible even in southern latitudes.

Well, for Vologda, Aurora is not uncommon.

In all my photographic activity, I have already captured many flashes in the sky.

But to this day, this phenomenon is breathtaking, surprising and makes you run headlong in the middle of the night with a camera in your hands, hoping for a bright colored flash in the sky.

The photos were taken on the night of May 10-11. I did not capture the second day of the magnetic storm, which was slightly weaker.

I already knew the forecast of the northern lights in advance. In the evening, I went out on the balcony, which looks to the southeast, took a picture on my smartphone and immediately realized that the geomagnetic storm was in full swing!

The glow was already visible to the naked eye, and the smartphone transmitted clear bright colors – green and pink.

I immediately grabbed a tripod and a camera and drove to the city center.

Three times I was going to leave the shooting to go home, as the glow in the sky was fading.

But then it would flash again, I would lay out the tripod again and shoot again.

...I filmed it until it smelled like dawn.
