[WE96] Theweekend: Outside food – There is no rain or weather that can resist it.
I love cooking outdoors by the fire. Tell us about your best or worst outdoor cooking experience, where and when was it, what did you cook, what went right or wrong and why? Tell us your suggestions and tips for best results, a recipe or what not to do based on your experiences. Bonus point for using your own photos.
When I was a little girl I remember one of my favorite games was the kitchenette, being with my cousins, friends or alone I would build a tarantine with stones, fabrics, chairs and old wood in the backyard of my grandmothers' house or in some natural space where I would go with my family on occasion. The barbecues at the beach and in the countryside with my parents and siblings I enjoyed them very much, always wishing for those moments, without realizing how much my parents made an effort to make everything perfect, today I recognize why they were so exhausted.
Obviously, as I grew up everything changed, including my parents' responsibilities and occupations and then my own that gave my life other interests, however, despite the occupations that as an adult I have assumed, I have had the opportunity to enjoy invitations to country moments among friends with gregarious and adventurous spirit for recreation and outdoor recreation, preparing food and much more entertainment.
I have several anecdotes and all of them with their own particular grace, they have been beautiful picnic type encounters of integration and culinary learning with nice people. One of them was for the birthday of a little friend I met in the Joropo group of which I was part, his parents were country people living in the city, and with great pleasure they invited me and other colleagues to a large mansion that the boy's grandfather took care of, and after the request of the space we were able to celebrate his birthday there.
It was a mansion located in the Alta Florida of Caracas - Venezuela, near the Avila, our great vegetable lung of Caracas, this beautiful house was destined by the owners to rent it to artistic producers of cinema, television and shows, the environment had large extensions of vegetation, a large swimming pool, a park and a small cabin, space to which we had access as well as to take pictures in some authorized areas.
The invitation was to be there at 9am where we would be picked up, but some arrived late and from then on the feast was delayed. Among the guests there were few children and several adults among them me and as the place was appropriate we decided to prepare with firewood a soup of beef ribs, to which we all collaborated bringing the relevant ingredients, except the pot that if the grandfather vigilant contributed it, one of the companion knew a lot about this type of food preparation outdoors since her parents had an inn in Ciudad Bolivar and there all meals were made in that way.
It was really an enriching experience sharing between adults and children in the best country and llanero style, with the guidance and supervision of our friend we were all chopping the seasonings, cleaning the vegetables, looking for the right wood to make the stove burn, add the ingredients, and then wait for the soup to be ready and all together to taste it. Another fabulous thing was to walk around some of the permitted spaces inside and outside the mansion, distracting us to such an extent that we forgot cronos.
The only bad thing was that in the afternoon it started to rain suddenly and we all had to get out of the pool to protect what was outside the small hut, among that the big pot of soup that was still hot, the great fortune is that we had strong men who from their possibilities carried the pot to the hut, but the soot could not miss leaving the table stained. What a shame... So there, in the rainy evening and with little light, we began to clean up and clean everything and then sing the birthday with a cake that I had brought to the guest of honor.
But time was pressing we had to leave and we had to leave everything impeccable as it was lent to us, there was still some soup left and we asked grandfather to provide us with containers to keep and leave it, but he had very few, then he decided to break one of the rules of his work and opened the kitchen of the mansion where he looked for some containers, in this way the soup would not be wasted leaving it for him and the relief staff, committing himself to clean the containers even the pot and the table that was black.
We could not miss the birthday song that we quickly dedicated crowded in the cabin, with the pot near the cake, the piece of cake for each guest was wrapped in aluminum foil to take, when the transport arrived it was still raining and it was not authorized to enter the enclosure where we were, then we said goodbye to the grandfather and ran with all our belongings to board it. The children did not limit themselves, they happily damp inside the transport were tasting their cake, while the adults between jokes we organized the belongings better.
These nice people kindly dropped me off at a subway station to get home, when I got in there I was able to spruce up a little more, my outfit being the evidence of having had a field day where there was soot.
See you next time around @theweekend
Thank You 🌻
