Visiting The György Bernády Foundation Art Collection
For the past few months I've been to several art exhibitions, including galleries with sales and have seen quite a lot of artworks, and different styles. Going to art galleries doesn't make you an expert on anything, but it helps you define what you like or don't like and I can say it helped me to realize how to look at the artworks and how to evaluate them, based on my own criteria.
Before I show you what I saw last week, when visiting the György Bernády Foundation's art collection in Tarrgu Mures, here's a short quote about who György Bernády was.
György Bernády (Bethlen, 10 April 1864 – Târgu Mureș, 22 October 1938) was the mayor of Târgu Mureș (Marosvásárhely) twice, 1900–1912 and 1926–1929. In this period the City Hall and the Cultural Palace in Târgu Mureș on the Roses Square were both built. His name is associated with public illumination and sewerage in the city. In this period many schools, libraries and art galleries were also built. source
He contributed a lot to the development of the city of Targu Mures, which was called Marosvásárhely during his days.
The foundation is celebrating 30 years of existence this year, so with this occasion they have set up an exhibition with all the artworks the foundation owns. These are artworks most likely gifted to them by artists who have had exhibitions held there over the years. The entrance is always free as this is a foundation.
The foundation is situate on the Horea street, which is very close to the city center. It is open from Monday to Friday, between 9am and 2pm. It's an odd schedule, most likely inconvenient for many, so if you want to visit, make sure you adjust your schedule accordingly.
The beauty of this exhibition was that the artworks have not been bought nor selected by anyone. I mean these were most likely artworks donated by artists, so I suppose these were as random as possible.
Each artist had one artwork displayed, there was a tag attached to the artwork, with the name of the artist and the title of the artwork, but no year of creation. However, these artworks are pretty recent, I mean these are contemporary artists.
This artwork is named The woods, an interesting one as it would have never crossed my mind to illustrate trees like that, but I like it. It's unique and colorful.
This one is called Composition and it's painted glass. Don't ask me what it is as I can't figure it out but I love that blue on the glass.
This was a mixed one, metal sculpture pinned to painted wood and I must admit, I've never seen a similar one till now.
Sunset is very common in art, let it be painting or photography. Sunrise not so much, but this painting is called Sunrise. Does it look like sunrise? Not really, but I love the yellow and blue.
This is another strange one, not because of what you see on the canvas, but because of the title, which says Pantry. There are indeed sausages hanging down and some fish on what appears to be a table, but the mice has no place in the pantry. Nonetheless, I like it. Does the yellow and blue color combination has anything to do with it? I don't know but i suppose it contributes to it. In some cases you just like something, but can't explain it why.
This is a funny one, but I'm not referring to the artwork itself this time. The artwork is called Morning Blue or Dawn Blue and I like it. I'm starting to realize some shades of blue, mixed with yellow have a certain effect on me, that's why I like these paintings.
But looking at this one more closely, I see the artist's signature at the upper left corner, along with the year of creation, upside down!
Look at it now, does turning it upside down change anything? Does the painting look differently? 😀 So what do you think? Was this hung upside down? Or has the artist played a prank on everyone?
This was a tough one for me. The artwork is called Night Partying and it features animals, from cats, horses, to mice. It's a nice one, but the quality of the photo is not the best due to the existing reflections. I had to stay on the side and try to place my phone in front of the painting, in order to take the photo. And what looks quite ok on the scene, turns out it's not even acceptable, when you look at it on the big screen.
Fault Line , simple and blue.
I suppose you don't need any comment here.
This one was a complete struggle and still, you can see the room reflected in the glass. It is called Dialog and you can see t must have been a heated one.
This painting is called Enlightenmentand I struggled to understand what it is. Is it a head and a neck, surrounded by the yellow light? 🤷♀ May be.
The last one for today is this metal sculpture (I hope that's what it's called), portraying György Bernády himself. Doesn't look much like him though.
Soooo, which one is your favorite today?

Nice artwork of yours
These paintings are amazing. I have a hard time choosing which is my most favorite. The blue and yellow colors is a beautiful combination.
Good choice, I like those too.
I love all slides of the painting and art work..😊
I'm glad to hear that.
My top pick would be "The Woods" because I simply don't get it. haha . Anyways my favorites are the ones painted in blue and yellow coz those are my favorite colors. It somehow relaxes me every time I see an artwork colored with blue.
How lovely this exhibition is.😍
I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes the blue, yellow color combination.
The art exhibitions you visited were great,I can see a lot of good art leaders that you performed.
Thank you!
Perfect painting
Thank you!
The sculpture on the wood is the one I like, looks like a horse and jockey and in harmony.
Reflections are something which does wind me up when I try to take pictures in galleries etc. you look back and go oh darn it that would have been a cracker if not for that reflection.
Great to see this post, as I was wondering whether we could post things like this here, as they are not ours.
Targu Mures is a name from the past, I visited there quite a few years ago.
Indeed, the jockey is an interesting one and reflection is a pain. I've been trying different tricks, to avoid it, but sometimes there's no possibility to take a decent photo. I'm glad to hear you visited the city :)
Yeah I am with you on the reflections, I have been trying things, sometimes nothing works tho🤣
I'm not planning to give up experimenting though 😏
What about you?
