It's Freesia Time Again
To take my mind off of what's happening in the world, today I'm going to change the topic of my post and I'm going to share with you photos of my freesia.
Freesia is one of my favorite spring flower. I mean there's no spring without freesia, snowdrops and violets. Snowdrop I had last week or two weeks ago, I can't even remember exactly, it seems like ages ago now, honestly.
I grew up having freesia every spring as my mom loved it very much. I remember the wonderful scent that filled the room for days, when we got freesia.
Freesia is a genus of herbaceous perennial flowering plants in the family Iridaceae, first described as a genus in 1866 by Christian Friedrich Ecklon (1886) and named after the German botanist and medical practitioner, Friedrich Freese (1795-1876). It is native to the eastern side of southern Africa, from Kenya south to South Africa, most species being found in Cape Provinces. The plants commonly known as "freesias", with fragrant funnel-shaped flowers, are cultivated hybrids of a number of Freesia species. Some other species are also grown as ornamental plants. source
For me the flower is everything but ordinary. Maybe the price is contributing to me feeling like this towards this flower as it's not cheap at all.
Yesterday I saw these freesias at the flower shop and thought I'd buy some, to make me feel better and to enjoy this old tradition. When I got to the flower shop and saw how much one costs 😲, I decided to buy only one and buy more stuff to help the refugees with the rest.
There are many types of freesias but here I mostly saw yellow (that's the original for me as most of the freesias I have seen so far were yellow), white pinkish white, red and blue or purple. So far I've only had yellow and white but would love to have the pinkish white once though. Yesterday I only saw white at the flower shop, so here it is my white freesia.
I opted for one that had a lot of buds and only one bud was open, partially. I was thinking to pick one that lasts longer, so this one looked perfect. There's always a risk that the buds won't open, as there are too small, but so far it has never happened to me, so I hope this will not be the first.
These are the smallest buds, so there's a chance these won't open, but at least the others will.
The biggest slap on my face was, when I realized this freesia is not even close to what we had when I was a kid. Thar amazing scent was totally missing. The scent of this one is weak, almost non existent. I was told by the florist that these are brought from the Netherlands. Must be another type.

Very nice post
I have multicoloured ones in my balcony in Athens. They are adorable. Don't last long (as all good things tent to) but they're priceless.
Lucky you! ☹️ We don't have these nice flowers. Although i should google it, let's see if these can be grown inside.
