Homemade Martini
A good few years ago I came across a Martini recipe on the internet and saved it right away. You can buy Martini at every grocery shop or liqueur store, but making your own at home seemed very tempting at that time. The best thing about the recipe was that there was not a mix of alcohol and some spices. The recipe contained no alcohol, so it made me curious, if you can get an alcoholic drink using those ingredients. Since then, I repeated the process several times as I like the outcome quite a lot.
Today I decided to share the recipe and the process with you. Who knows, someone may like it and give it a try. I don't know where I copied the recipe from, years ago, so I'm going to quote the recipe, without a source.
Ingredients
- 300g rice,
- 1.5 kg sugar,
- 1 vanilla pod (or 3 packs vanilla sugar),
- 200g raisins,
- pinch of cinnamon,
- 8 - 10 cloves,
- 3 lemon,
- 3L water.
Method
The method is very simple, no extra knowledge is needed to do this.
Put the rice in a big jar of 5L. I did not have one now, all my jars are at my dad's, so I used a big pot instead. I put the rice in it, added the raisins, then the sugar. The truth is, I made the first two with vanilla pods, but now the price of real vanilla has sky rocketed, it does not worth it, so this time I used vanilla sugar instead. After that I added the cloves.
For this recipe I bought organic lemons as you need to use the whole lemon and I don't want chemicals in my Martini. So I bought organic lemons and sliced then into 0.5cm slices, then added all to the rest of the ingredients.
Now that I'm writing this post, had to realize I forgot to add the cinnamon, but nothing is lost as I made this on Sunday, there's still time to add it. So you add the cinnamon, then add 3L of water. Mix well and cover with a lid or a table cloth. Stir well every day for a whole week. After that, let it rest for another 6 weeks, without touching it.
When the 6 week period is up, strain it and put it in bottles. I usually leave it for half a year or so, before drinking it, but you can save it for longer as nothing bad happens. Right now I have some from two years ago.
Now you may ask what I'm doing with the homemade martini and why I'm making it. The truth is, the majority of it is always gifted to friends and family members. People like homemade food and drink and so far everyone said it was very god. It is something you can't buy at the grocery store as what you buy from there is a bit different. So this is a unique present.

Guau! En las películas parece mucho más fácil hacer un Martini pero hacerlo de forma casera lleva mucho tiempo jajaja aunque veo que ya tenes experiencia haciéndolo, que bueno que puedas regalar algo diferente y único para la gente que te rodea eso lo convierte en algo muy especial.
Don't get fooled by movies 😁, they just pour out the Martini from the bottle, add some olives and it's done. It's harder till you get there, but it worth it as it's good.

It contains alcohol as it's a fermented drink, but it's not strong. Good luck with it.
The process is detailed and pretty simple. Might as well try it though I don't drink. But two years seemed too long.
I don't drink mush either, only occasionally. It takes 7 weeks, not 2 years.

Yes ma'am , you mentioned it. i saw. Can't we use oranges instead of lime? like this drink good for festive occasions. In Sri Lanka, New Year celebrations will be celebrated in one more day. So we celebrate parties on those days.
The only way to know is to try it out. Orange has a different, stronger flavor, so you may get a different flavor, but I don't think it would be bad.

Limoncello is good too, although I've never tried it, maybe one day.

Haha, not my intentions at all, I just couldn't reject the memories of those ads. A friend of mine had taken a VERY funny picture of me in front of a TV paused at the right fraction of the time on one of those ads - wish I still I had it 🙂
Write me down on your guest list please I have never had it made in this homemade way, in fact, I am going to tell my husband as soon as I can so that he can prepare it to drink on our wedding anniversary, it must be well fermented and with an alcohol %, because the one that is bought ready is strong. And in a bar, it also feels like an earthquake under my feet, lol.
Will it ferment if I don't add sugar to it? My husband is diabetic... Maybe I can put the classic olive tuft on it?

I don't think it's going to ferment without sugar as that's what starts the fermentation. Diabetics are not allowed to drink alcohol as far as I know as it raises the sugar level a lot, so it's a no for him either way.
However, it may be good for you as it's not so strong. Unfortunately I don't have the alcohol meter here, it is at my dad's so I can't measure the alcohol content of it.

I can't tell you right now, but I'm going to get the refractometer from my dad and get back to you on that. It's stronger than a beer for sure. According to Wikipedia

Si I got the refractometer and did the test. It shows 30° but it's a false result. No way it has such high alcohol level, I could not drink it. My dad says it's because it has sugar and the refractometer can't measure it correctly.
There's another chance as my dad has another tool, those ancient ones, like those mercury thermometers. That may give me a more accurate result, so I'm going to test that, when I go to my dad's.

Martini is one of the most expensive drinks that we have here. I think trying to make it at home will be the best idea

I am amazed how long this lasts. I think the more it stay longer the taste become more better.
Not just rice soaked in water as it has sugar and other ingredients as well. It lasts as it's going to be an alcoholic drink.

Yes, it is easy to make and not expensive either. Organic lemon is a must if you don't want chemicals in your drink.

Never would I have imagined you could make a drink like this with rice as an ingredient. This is one of the best things I love about Hive. It’s a new discovery everyday here.
The time before you drink it is VERY VERY long though. Not sure I would have the patience to wait even 6 weeks, talk less a year. I’m sure the wait is worth it though because the drink looks it.
😂 Self control my friend and the desire to go for quality. 7 weeks is nothing. I have some from 2 years ago, plus a bunch of other homemade drinks, one better than the other. However, I rarely drink, so no danger there for me.
And yes, Hive is a huge opportunity to learn, you just have to be open for it.

Not almost everything, but most of it if I can. It's better for me this way :) I eat what I want and not what others want me to eat. It's a choice.
