Happy Easter!
Today I just want to wish everyone Happy Easter! It is Easter Sunday for Christians and I'd like to tell you a bit about our tradition.
Two Easters
A good part of Romania, the Transylvania region has two Easters as Hungarians are celebrating Easter now and Romanian Orthodox have their Easter a week later. The dates are decided by the church and sometimes it happens to be one month delay between the two Easters. The official Easter is the Orthodox one and that is when we have an official day off, on Monday.
Having two Easters is very convenient for grocery stores and supermarkets as they have two occasions to sell Easter related products. What doesn't sell at Hungarian Easter, will sell at Orthodox Easter.
Traditional Easter Dishes
The traditional Easter dish in Romania is lamb, regardless of what community we are talking about. Both Romanians and Hungarians have lamb for Easter and the traditional kalács (Hungarian name) or cozonac (Romanian),which is also a Christmas sweet as well.
Kalach, kalács, kolach, kolač, or colac (Russian: калач, Ukrainian: колач, Hungarian: kalács, Serbian: колач / kolač, Bulgarian: колач, Romanian: colac, Polish: kołacz), is a traditional Eastern European bread, commonly served during various ritual meals. The name originates from the Old Slavonic word kolo (коло) meaning 'circle' or 'wheel'. source
I am baking my kalács for both Easter and Christmas as it is better than what you buy at the bakery. I'd be happy to have my kalács ready at the bakery, but what you buy there it's like the sponge and simply not good enough.
Easter eggs are also traditional, I mean real eggs and for some, chocolate eggs too. It is nice to dye them at home and have then the way you want.
Our Easter Lunch
Easter is a family event, so we are celebrating it with a family lunch every year. It is nice to sit together and have a traditional meal. Today I'd like to show you what a traditional Easter meal looks like in Transylvania.
This is the traditional lamb soup, made of lamb meat, vegetables (carrots and parsley), rice and egg. I'm sorry for the presentation, I had no time and possibility to do a nice photo shoot, maybe next time. If you have the chance to taste the soup, don't miss it as it is heavenly good.
For the main course we usually have roast lamb and lamb stew as well.
Today I opted for the roast and I would have the stew too, but I only have one stomach, which is the same size as yesterday, regardless of what day it is. The potato salad with mayonnaise is definitely not for dieters, but the steamed vegetables are, so I only had very little potato salad.
I'm always asking everyone what they would like for dessert and the answer is always poppy seeds, cherry and chocolate. They love it and you can never go wrong with these ingredients. So this time I thought I would make a pie.
This is me finalizing the pie, adding two bars of dark chocolate to it. All I can tell you about the pie is that they were eating it like there was no tomorrow. The first plate lasted one minute, the second was gone in a few minutes.
This is my kalács, the third one, just took it out of the oven. The first two are already gone.
It is not usual to bake on Easter Sunday, because this day is for celebration and rest, but I have a good reason to do that. My dad is leaving tomorrow and I want to send his neighbor a good piece of kalács. She is an old lady, a very kind one who's life is not full of joy right now. I'd like to cheer her up a little bit. They are going to have Easter next week, but I am always sending her kalács and eggs to have a taste of Easter in advance. It is always good to help others.

It's not so cold in Transylvania, but it wasn't sunny either. Let's hope we get some nice weather soon.
I visited Cluj a few months ago and just loved everything I ate there, thank you for sharing!
I'm really happy to hear that as this is free advertising for a country. If you offer good food to visitors, they tend to go back and possibly bring others as well 😉
Hope you still managed to enjoy Easter after so much cooking!!
Yes, I have, otherwise what's the point of all this?
That is a really good point, but I have often seen people slave over making feasts for others only to end up too exhausted to enjoy. It is good that this was not the case. It is easier when you have helpers. Or boundless energy.
We usually share responsibilities. I usually bake and my brother cooks as he's the lamb expert 🙂
From Romania ? I have loved visiting a little part of that amazing country .
Happy Easter 🐇🥚
Happy Easter to you too 😊 🐰🥚

Happy Easter to you @erikah! You are so busy making those Easter goodies.. Good to know your traditions and culture on Easter. In the Philippines, most families go to the beach to bid goodbye to Jesus at dawn. Every family have their own food for tge celebration, it's like a picnic celebrating the reborn of Jesus and on this 3rd day ascending to heaven. Before the 3rd day as in Holy Thursday and Good Friday, Filipinos go the the church for the Holy Mass and the people make the station of the cross just like what Jesus made before he died on Good Friday. Some locals make the station of the cross ( go kneeling from station to station inside the church) as a means of a sacrifice for their sins and ask for forgiveness.
My dear @mers, thank you for sharing your tradition with me. I've never heard what the Easter tradition in Philippines is, so I'm glad to hear it from you.
Here the tradition differs from religion to religion. Catholics for example have the Easter procession, I'm not sure it's the right translation. They are circling around the church on Easter night. I'm a reformed christian, we don't have that tradition, but we go to church on Sunday morning. Also there used to be a tradition on Good Friday, fasting, without meat or without any food till dusk or for a whole day but not many are keeping this tradition alive anymore.
I'm a little bit late, but Happy Easter to you too ❤️🥚🐇
It all looks way too delicious! 😋
Over here I used to have all kinds of sweets and desserts, too... but covid ruined it all. My family stopped making those gatherings altogether. 🤢
I'm happy to know you keep your traditions, despite all the craziness in the world! I wish I could do the same... but it's not just up to me.
Christmas, Easter and birthdays are for the family and we're always together, no matter what. One lunch or dinner, no big thing but we are always sitting together in these days. These traditional dishes are part of the celebration.
I'm sorry to hear you're not keeping the tradition alive, maybe now that covid is mostly gone ... Keeping my fingers crossed.
Wooow, se ve muy rica la comida. Saludos desde Venezuela 😘
Thank you! It tastes good too :)
It looks really delicious. Happy Easter! I am curious about the cake you mentioned. I have not heard of it for some reason, which surprises me because, although my family is not religious, we have Romanian family friends. Also, in this part of the country (Canada), we have many immigrants from Ukraine.
I remember when I was a girl being lucky enough to be invited to a friend's house for a traditional Ukrainian Easter celebration. My friend's mother was born in Canada, but her grandparents were born in Ukraine. What a wonderful feast we had! Her grandmother made homemade chocolate eggs. I had never seen anything so beautiful and delicious!
Although I am vegetarian, your post made my mouth water. Some find this odd, but I have been vegetarian a long time, but was not for the first (cough) decades of my life. That reminds me (okay, I know my comment is getting long...) of a lady from Turkey whom I tutored in English (ESL) here a few years ago. Many times, I tutor for hours and get hungry because I forget to bring a snack and no one offers me food.
Well, since this lady was from Turkey (both of my parents are immigrants, but not from Turkey), of course she offered me food. I find that people from Canada usually offer you nothing when you come to their home while people from almost anywhere else offer something. Her mother had made some sort of delicious crepes with a meat filling. She offered it to me. I tried to decline because I am vegetarian, but she mistook my declining for politeness and insisted, and I had not taught her enough English to explain, so I could not politely refuse. I am glad I didn't! Her mother was an amazing cook.
I know I am way off topic, but I thought I would say hello, happy Easter, and I enjoyed your post. I will be looking up that cake. Do I need more cake? Probably not, but I am curious!

If you have Romanian friends, just as them about COZONAC. They must know it as it is traditional in Romania.
About offering food to people who visit, custom is different in every country and people also see things differently. I know in the UK some people tell you you can visit from 5.30 to 6 pm, which means you are welcome for 30 minutes. That would be rude here 😁 You either welcome someone, or you don't, it's that simple.
Customs and hospitality in Europe are very different. If I am inviting guests, I am always making sure to have drinks and some snacks or cookies to offer them. That is the least you can do.
Thank you for stopping by and Happy Easter, even if it's a bit late :)
