Art And History

Continuing my art series with some photos I took in November this year at the exhibition of Mária Hunyadi and László Hunyadi, husband and wife, showing the world how they see it through their wonderful artworks.

Áron Márton

Historical figures are always present in art and it is a great way to not only remind people of what they have done for the culture, but also educate. Áron Márton was a Hungarian Roman Catholic Bishop and advocate for religious freedom and human rights. You can find his statue in several places in Transylvania. Those who know his work can recognize him without looking at the tag as László Hunyadi's statue is a lifelike copy of the Bishop.

Imre Egerházi

To tell you the truth, I had no idea who the gentleman was and after running a search, I think Imre Egerházi was a Hungarian painter. I was able to find a video with the painter and can tell you, the similarity between the artwork and the painter is amazing. I need to research how these bronze plates are done as the outcome is fascinating. it's a special kind of art, that requires a lot of skills but it must be rewarding.

Zsigmond János

Zsigmond János, II. János (Buda, July 7, 1540 – Gyulafehérvár, March 14, 1571) was the elected king of Hungary, first prince of Transylvania (1556–1571). Son of king János Szapolyai and of Isabella Jagiellon. source

He became king at the age of 19 and resigned at the age of 30, then dies one year later, at such a young age.

20231120_105805a.jpg

Franciscus Davidis or Ferenc Dávid

Ferenc Dávid (also rendered as Francis David or Francis Davidis; born as Franz David Hertel, c. 1520 – 15 November 1579) was a Protestant preacher and theologian from Transylvania, the founder of the Unitarian Church of Transylvania, and the leading figure of the Nontrinitarian Christian movements during the Protestant Reformation. He disputed the mainstream Christian doctrine of the Trinity, believing God to be one and indivisible. source

These people appear to us in the form of these lovely artworks and maybe we appreciate the artworks more today, but in fact they were the people paving the road to where we are today. They had a massive contribution one way or another, to our history and deserve a place in every gallery.

20231120_105818a.jpg

Sándor Reményik

Sándor Reményik, the famous Hungarian poet, who is known to every Transylvanian as you learn his poems in school at such a young age.

20231120_105838a.jpg

János Bolyai

János Bolyai, the famous Hungarian mathematician who developed absolute geometry—a geometry that includes both Euclidean geometry and hyperbolic geometry, can't be missing from the gallery. It is a nice tribute for the contribution the mathematician and his father had to science.

20231120_110030a.jpg

Robert Nyilka

At first glance it looks like chocolate, but trust me, it's not. It's the statue of a well known Transylvanian painter.

20231120_110105a.jpg

Pagan Madonna

After sculptures and metal plates, let's switch to textile art by Mária Hunyadi.

20231120_110108a.jpg

Here's a cropped image of the artwork for you to be able to see the details. At a closer look you can see how unusual it is, regarding the raw materials used. canvas of different types, metals, gems and who knows what else was used to create this beauty. It is definitely a beauty in my eyes. The creativity of the artist is exemplary. I've been drawn to textile art before and every time I see a lovely artwork like this, it makes me think of starting something on my own. Lack of talent in other area of art, makes me try this rout.

20231120_110132a.jpg

20231120_110138a.jpg

Turns out I took a partial photo at the gallery, here the light is different, so maybe you can see the metal parts better.

20231120_110150a.jpg

Three Kings

We have all kinds of religions on Hive, so some of you may recognize what these scene means, other won't, so let me explain.

The biblical Magi (singular: magus) — also known as the Three Wise Men, Three Kings, and the Three Magi — were distinguished foreigners in the Gospel of Matthew and Christian tradition. They are said to have visited Jesus after his birth, bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They are regular figures in traditional accounts of the nativity celebrations of Christmas and are an important part of Christian tradition. source

So just like the previous one, this is also a well known Biblical scene you can see brought to the public on Christmas eve in churches or religious gatherings.

20231120_110200a.jpg

20231120_110209a.jpg

With the risk of sounding like a broken record, I love it. The execution is brilliant in my eyes. The materials used, the colors, the shapes, I love everything. Look at the faces. Even though it's canvas, mother and child have facial expression.

20231120_110448a.jpg

Founders

It's interesting how the human mind works. When I stepped into the gallery and saw the wonderful artworks, liked them at first glance. Then I saw this artwork and remembered immediately that I've seen it before at the same gallery and knew exactly where, on which wall it was. I remember it was a mixed exhibition but can't remember the date.

Back then I didn't research what it was about, but I did it now and turns out, it is about the Fintos castle, which was built on the Firtos hill in Transylvania, first in the II. century. The castle is included on the list of Romanian monuments.

It's a lovely illustration of the story.

20231120_110542a.jpg

Hedwiga

The I saw this oval textile work, that made me smile again and I saw this at another gallery at another exhibition and loved it. I remember I posted about it as well.

20231120_110550a.jpg

20231120_110555a.jpg

Look at the details. I have no words to describe the talent of the artist. Even the flowers look somehow real. The work takes you back in time, to another, long ended century. Love it.

20231120_110617a.jpg

Judas

Judas Iscariot (died c. 30 – c. 33 AD) was—according to Christianity's four canonical gospels—a disciple and one of the original Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ. Judas betrayed Jesus to the Sanhedrin in the Garden of Gethsemane by kissing him on the cheek and addressing him as "master" to reveal his identity in the darkness to the crowd who had come to arrest him. Like Brutus, his name is often used synonymously with betrayal or treason. source

The quote above explains the scene recreated by the artist. What amazes me is how compact it is, as the canvas was not a big one. It's perfect in my eyes.

What you saw here means not only decades of practice but also great imagination to put history on canvas or to shape the metal in a way to get what you want.

I can never rise to this level, nor come close to it, but I hope I can still create something interesting.

but I hope I can still create something interesting.

I'd love to see you create one. Starting with simple paintings can make it easier and encouraging.

I think because of my religion I can relate to most of the arts here. The three wise men and the kiss of betrayal from Judas is quite significant.
And the statue of that Catholic Bishop is wonderful too.

Well done ❤️🎉.

Well, I'm not going to paint as it's not really for me, unless I give a try to watercolor. What I want is textile art as it seems more attractive and maybe I have a better chance of creating something acceptable.

If you're Christian too, then you understand what you see here :)

The textile art has me hooked. It is so beautiful and at first I thought it is such a simple process...but the more I look at them, the more I realize it takes a lot more than simply pasting pieces of rags onto each other.

This one, along with the flowers you mentioned, so beautiful!! The beauty is in the derails and the shading and depth created by the folds. Wonderful exhibition!!

The textile art has me hooked.

You and me both! And trust me, this is everything but simple. I've been to a few textile art exhibitions and you would be shocked how far creativity can go, but it's not easy or simple.

I see you chose the most wonderful one. This was absolutely mind blowing. Maybe I should find some time and use this type of art as my therapy.

You certainly should. I didn't want to say it in my original comment, but I had in my mind the paintings you had started with. I thought you'd continue. Maybe you should, it could be therapeutic.

Why didn't you want to say that in your original comment? I'm open to any good suggestion that helps me in any way.

Beautiful photos and So many beautiful art here.

This got me😢

He became king at the age of 19 and resigned at the age of 30, then dies one year later, at such a young age.

I was wondering why Zsigmond János would resigned from being king at a young age but I feel maybe he knew he was going to die one year after, that was why he resigned. The reason I have to kill me curiosity, hehe!

Thank you @iskawrites.

You know how those times were. Attacks, betrayals, pacts, treaties, defeats, you name it. They had not a single minute of calm in their lives there was always a battle going on. He was taken prisoner and had to resign.

Oh such nice textile reliefs! Absolutely fantastic creations.
I am the kind of person who collects buttons and small beautiful pieces of fabric, I have thought of creating something myself!

Everything is wonderful, everything smells of history. The story of the 3 kings caught my attention, I will research it. The metal sheets and sculptures are amazing. @erikah thank you for sharing this beautiful narrative
