BABY'S CIRCUMCISION IN MY CULTURE: Intensive care +Procedures

Particularly today I want to bring to limelight the act of male children circumcision in Africa especially my culture, the Ibibio tribe in Akwa-Ibom state NIGERIA.

But before I set into the procedures of how we handle all that…let’s talk abit about circumcision is it a necessity or a matter of choice for parent?....well this is totally option to the parent, cause for some reason such as religion, cultural, socio-culture or personal reasons

Circumcision is actually a surgical procedure of removing the foreskin covering the end of the penis which is usually done after the baby’s birth or first month, although there are some benefits to this

First of all it helps prevent the baby from urinary infections, infection of the penis history has it circumcised male stand a higher chance of not contracting H.i.v or other forms of infection

All tho this is done locally using the plastibell method then after this the intensive care will be given to the baby the first day after the procedures

This Vaseline will be applied gently around the tip of the penis to stop bleeding and must be applied at a regular intervals for the whole of the first day and water must not be allow to rich it because of the pain

After birthing The baby, you make warm but a little bit hot to splash on the tip with force then use the left hand to pull down the skin surrounding the the head so that it doesn’t grow back to cover the tip..continue this for a week

After that we use a brand new engine oil using a soft feather like something to deep In the oil to rub it around the tip and also do this regularly the whole day not allowing it to dry

to this we don’t cover the injury like wearing the baby napkin or diapers just left the baby’s area to be open so the oil also prevents infection

During this care period especially the first day we give the baby paracetamol syrup to ease the pain and this care is given for like a period of three weeks to one month

Another thing is the cutting of the baby’s tongue ….Most times this can be done immediately the baby is born like and experience mid-wife or nurse will put a finger into the baby’s mouth under the tongue to wipe off the cum like substance under the tongue and it won’t join back but if not taken care off immediately after up to 5-6hours after birth it will…

For the tongue cutting, the nurse or midwife uses a sharp object like razor to cut off the base of the tongue then immediately the mother will breastfeed the baby

For the treatment the mother will deep salt into warm water then uses her finger to clean the baby’s mouth till the injury is gone

This is the treatment procedure and how we take care of our newborn circumcision for the tongue and the penis for male children, for the female children The mother can choose to pierce the baby’s ear loop For earings or choose to leave it but it is proffered to do it at the infant stage because it will be more painful at adult stage……
