Just Hoofin’ It!…….My Actifit Report Card: October 17 2024

Ever see that weird clamshell like formation on dead trees? It’s called Hoof Fungus, also known as Fomes fomentarius. It comes in varying colors from cream color to blackish. Sometimes, it will have stripes of reddish burgundy or orange like colors running horizontally in it. I’ve seen very tiny ones and some rather large specimens.

They are often called Hoof Fungus as they resemble a hoof of a horse, sort of. They are usually found on deadwood and grown prolifically in my neck of the woods.

Some uses for this? Fire starter! They are combustible! So, if you need a campfire, this will help things along. Other uses can include clothing, medicine, help to dry flies for fly fishing, pin cousins and more. I even ran across an article on how this could maybe replace plastics!

Work was super busy today both prior to the afternoon appointments and during. I was actually glad to see a couple of ‘no shows’!

Tomorrow is looking to be even busier as I have no help tomorrow. Just me doing everything but giving eye exams! I bet I meet myself coming and going in the hallway! 🤣
