Back then in Secondary school, one of the literature books that was recommended for us was "second chance" by Nyengi Koin, in this story line, a young lady named Mina right from childhood, her life and decisions was always decided by her mother, she can't make any plans without the interference of her mother.

This continued up till her University level , where she met a guy (Richard) whom she fell in love with, unlike her the guy is strong willed, independent and makes decisions as soon as possible, he loved her but hated the fact that she can't stand on her own, "she is still attached to her mother's apron" like he always says

The guy was serious with her and wanted to get married to her before graduation because they were both in their final year but her mother refused because he is not from a wealthy background, she had a great influence on the father too for she was their only child and always want to be in her business. She told him to graduate first and work in the family company.

At first he refused, but one thing led to the other and she got pregnant, he had no choice than to stay back and work in her father's company, they made everything easy, but he still felt somehow as a man. This control continued, the lady's family kept on deciding for them, this didn't go well with the husband, the hospital they were going to register for antenatal was picked by the mum, she insisted the hospital has been the one they have been using for long, the lady saw nothing wrong with this since she is already used to being controlled all her life.

She gave birth to twin(two girls), the mum came over and complained that the house is too small that they needed space for the naming ceremony so she took her daughter back to their family house with the hope that she will come back few months after, this continued after one year the man couldn't cope again, he can barely do things or talk without the mother not wanting to have a say and this always ends in argument, he discused with the wife, and told her it's high time they left because they needed their privacy.

The wife refused because she loved the comfort of the home he told her if she doesn't follow him now then he is gone forever. He picked one of the twins and left in annoyance, this led to their separation.

How I felt this story was a little bit speaking to me and made me change my mindset

Having parents who always like to make decisions for me, the choice of what I wear, where I go, the University I attended, while growing up I was not so outspoken, and the last child I tend to accept things the way it is even if it doesn't go well with me, I started changing because I need to have a mind of my own. This looked rebellious sometimes, but I felt fulfilled knowing fully well I wouldn't live anyone's life apart from mine.. when you are firm with yoour decisions, people will learn to respect your choices.
