Let's walk together | San Roque Boulevard
A new day to go for a walk, observe and photograph to capture in images a little piece of the life and history of this warm and friendly city where I live.
Un nuevo día para salir a caminar, observar y fotografiar, para dejar plasmado en imágenes un pedacito de la vida y la historia de esta cálida y amistosa ciudad donde vivo.
Between the bus stop and the road that leads me to my office -not far away- there is a boulevard, where as a child I used to play putting my feet in the water of the fountain and running through its spaces; as a pre-adolescent I used to play video games like Pac-man and car races in a little place there. As a teenager I would meet girlfriends with whom I would kiss passionately in their most hidden places, and occasionally I would attend rock concerts that took place in its small amphitheater or acoustic shell as we usually call it in my country.
Today it looks very different from how it was at that time; its fountains have disappeared, replaced by flower boxes where there are no plants left, or by concrete stages without any use or decoration. Concerts are no longer held in its amphitheater, but it is used by bums and passers-by to urinate in its surroundings. It is now full of fast food street vendors, although there are still some artisans whose presence was traditional in its facilities.
Entre la parada del autobús y el camino que conduce a mi oficina -no muy distante- hay un boulevard, donde de niño solía jugar metiendo mis pies en el agua de la fuente y corriendo por sus espacios; en la pre adolescencia solía jugar videojuegos como Pac-man y carreras de carro en un localcito que había allí. Ya de adolescente me encontraba con noviecitas con quienes me besaba apasionadamente en sus lugares más escondidos, y ocasionalmente asistía a conciertos de rock que se realizaban en su pequeño anfiteatro o concha acústica como solemos llamarla en mi país.
Hoy en día se ve muy distinto a como era en esa época; desaparecieron sus fuentes remplazadas por jardineras donde ya no quedan ni las plantas, o por escenarios de concreto sin ninguna utilidad ni decoración. Ya no se realizan conciertos en su anfiteatro, sino que es utilizado por vagos y transeúntes para orinar en sus alrededores. Ahora está lleno de vendedores ambulantes de comida rápida, aunque aún se mantienen algunos artesanos cuya presencia era tradicional en sus instalaciones.
I must admit, with some embarrassment, that I have been visiting this Boulevard named after St. Roch for over 43 years, and until I started photographing it for this publication, I had no idea who this saint "Roch" was who was being honored there, much less an inkling of his history; so here I will briefly tell you a little of what I researched.
Saint Roque was a French pilgrim (Montpellier) canonized in 1629 for his miracles of healing during the European plague of mid 1347, of which he was a victim, being fed by a dog in his worst moments of illness, which is why his image is always represented next to a dog (his protective friend). He is considered the saint of health, hospitals and medical sciences, interesting for me who works for the Ministry of Health of my country.
Debo admitir -con un poco de vergüenza- que llevo más de 43 años visitando ese Boulevard que lleva por nombre San Roque, y hasta que comencé a fotografiarlo para esta publicación, no tenía la menor idea de quién era ese santo “Roque”, a quién se honraba en ese lugar y mucho menos sabía un ápice de su historia; así que aquí les contaré brevemente un poco de lo que investigué.
El Santo Roque fue un peregrino francés (Montpellier) canonizado en 1629 por sus milagros de sanación durante la peste europea de mediados 1347, de la cual fue víctima, siendo alimentado por un perro en sus peores momentos de enfermedad, por lo cual su imagen siempre se representa junto a un perro (su amigo protector). Es considerado el santo de la salud, los hospitales y las ciencias médicas, interesante para mí que trabajo para el Ministerio de Salud de mi país.
In Venezuela since 1826 there was an epidemic of "yellow fever", a disease that is still present (although controlled) in the country. In 1875 some wealthy landowners from the city of Acarigua in the state of Portuguesa (the city where I live), built a chapel dedicated to San Roque and brought from France a statue of the saint made of plaster and wood. This chapel was built in the place where it is currently located on the Boulevard.
After many situations where the chapel was deteriorating (after the death of the original landowners), the heirs sold the land along with the chapel and the new owner demolished it to build a service station (gas station) that remained operational from 1941 until 1960, when the municipality bought the land for the construction of the boulevard that would restore the reputation and devotion to the Saint Roque. The boulevard was inaugurated at the end of 1972.
En Venezuela desde el año 1826 se estaba padeciendo una epidemia de “fiebre amarilla”, enfermedad que se mantiene (aunque controlada) en el país. Para el año 1875 unos hacendados adinerados de la ciudad de Acarigua en el estado Portuguesa, Venezuela (ciudad donde vivo), construyeron una capilla dedicada a San Roque y trajeron de Francia una estatua del santo hecha en yeso y madera. Dicha capilla fue construida en el lugar donde actualmente se encuentra en el Boulevard.
Luego de muchas situaciones donde la capilla se fue deteriorando (luego de la muerte de los hacendados originarios), los herederos vendieron el terreno junto con la capilla y el nuevo propietario la demolió para construir una estación de servicio (gasolinera) que se mantuvo operativa desde 1941 hasta 1960, fecha en la cual la municipalidad compró el terreno para la construcción del boulevard que le devolvería el renombre y devoción al Santo Roque. El boulevard fue inaugurado a finales del año 1972.
Fortunately, the original statue of Santo Roque brought in 1875 was kept in the main church of the city, and moved to its new chapel built in the parish that bears the name of the saint and inaugurated in 1959. Almost 149 years after its arrival in our city, the original image of the saint remains under the protection of this new chapel (unfortunately I could not photograph it).
Afortunadamente, la estatua original del Santo Roque traída en 1875 fue resguardada en la iglesia principal de la ciudad, y trasladada a su nueva capilla construida en la parroquia que lleva el nombre del santo e inaugurada en el año 1959. A casi 149 años de su llegada a nuestra ciudad, la imagen original del santo se mantiene bajo el resguardo de esta nueva capilla (lamentablemente no pude fotografiarla).
At the closing of this publication, I feel proud of this boulevard, of its saint and of its history.

Definitivamente ese escenario de abandono a los lugares que antes íconos de nuestros pueblos y ciudades, se repite a nivel nacional y es muy lamentable.

Así es amigo. El abandono y descuido de lugares importantes de nuestra vida y cultura es un factor comun que nos arropa a todos.

I loved the boulevard; I was surprised by some of the images. The space looks very well integrated and you can interact in it. The statue is very well developed - a beauty!
Although also somewhat neglected.
The boulevard, although somewhat neglected, is still a meeting point located in the heart of the city, and although its best moments are behind it, it still has its own thing.
The statue had been removed for many years and was reinstalled perhaps a couple of years ago.

No pude evitar sentir nostalgia al inicio de tu relato. Cuántas historias alberga un mismo lugar! Y cómo todo está cambiando siempre, no? Ya habrá otra generación, con otras historias, incluso, así como las ha habido desde hace 149 años que trajeron la figura de San Roque.
Me fui por otro lado, pero qué gusto aprender un poquito más. Tampoco conocía a San Roque.

Tienes razón al mencionar la visión de las diferentes generaciones que van pasando mientras las estructuras, con sus modificaciones y cambios, permanecen testimoniando una historia que muchas veces desconocemos.
