The Pollination of Flowers

Hey everyone, first of all I would like to welcome you all to my new contribution and you had a wonderful day which was full of interesting experiences! In my new post, I would like to discuss nature and hope you can learn new things.

Without the pollination of plants, nature would have huge problems securing the population and a large part of all plants worldwide are dependent on the pollination of insects or other animals and according to estimates, over 80% of plants worldwide are dependent on insects and in some areas this number is even higher. Other animals also make an important contribution to pollination and this interaction of nature is essential for the ecological system and also for humans and the sad thing is that biodiversity is decreasing more and more and a large part of all native insects and plants are highly endangered and the numbers are constantly growing and according to alarming estimates, one species dies every ten minutes. Back to pollination where a fundamental distinction is made between two kinds and a large part is pollinated by help from outside and here, as mentioned, insects or other animals come into play and also different elements such as air or water are of great importance in this context and many other species are even able to pollinate themselves.

When it comes to external pollination, the plant attracts insects through various methods and usually certain fragrances or other signals are used which insects can understand and in essence it is about transferring the pollen from one to another plant of the same type. With the other kinds of pollination, the pollen is transmitted via the wind and usually lands by chance on the other plant and plants that are pollinated by water are also called hydrophilia and this is probably a rather rare form and only occurs in certain plants and here the pollen is transmitted via the water and thus reaches the other plant. The term for pollination from outside is also allogamy and self-pollination is also called autogamy and in this case the plant is pollinated by its own pollen and it is assumed that in the course of history, nature has adapted and has developed various possibilities to multiply as effectively as possible. It is always essential during pollination that the male pollen meets a female flower and this process should not be confused with fertilisation where a fusion occurs and here also the male pollen must first be brought to the female flower and it can be said that this would not be possible without pollination.
