The Artist Johan Christian Dahl

This breathtaking painting was created by the Norwegian artist Johan Christian Dahl (1788 - 1857) and here he has realistically depicted the Friedrichsholm Canal in Copenhagen and in this work various elements merge with each other. Dahl is also considered one of the most important representatives of Norwegian art which can also be counted to the era of Romanticism and he has become particularly known through his landscape paintings and was also in contact with other important representatives of landscape painting such as Casper David Friedrich (1774 - 1840). Early on, he devoted himself to art and in his early years he worked with decorations and later decided to go to Copenhagen where he attended an academy of the arts and his lessons were very characterised by classicism which inspired him less and more influence on him had Dutch painters of the golden age as well as painters from Denmark. He was very influenced by natural scenes and decided to travel after his studies and here it was advantageous for him that he even got support from the Danish royal family who admired his artistic abilities and decided to promote the young artist and his first huge trip was to Germany where he settled for a while. What also should influence his life as an artist was a trip to Italy and he developed more and more his own style and his fame as an artist increased steadily and he was praised by many artists for his works and this potential did not remain unrecognised and he later decided to share his knowledge at an art academy in Dresden where he influenced numerous young artists. He travelled again and again to his home country in Norway and often had a strong longing and it can be said that he remained faithful to art all his life and tried to use every opportunity to commit himself to it and he is also considered a founding member of numerous art associations and, in addition to his own talent, has also been strongly committed to promoting the art world in general.
