In Greek mythology, Hephaestus is also known as the god of blacksmithing or fire, and although he is not a classic god of the underworld, there are some legends of him in which he is active in the underground and creates his works together with his assistants there. On the Greek island of Lemnos, he was particularly revered and it was considered one of his most important places of worship and there are legends that he had his forge under a volcano in which he worked together with his assistants, the Cyclops and forged various objects from metal and it is believed that he was particularly strongly revered on the island in the northern part. When the volcano was just active, the residents thought that Hephaestus was currently active in creating new armor or other objects for the other gods, and the inhabitants of the island had such great respect of him and his anger that they regularly brought him sacrifices to appease his anger and to be safer from volcanic eruptions. He had the ability to erupt the volcano and this was mostly to send a symbol that he is currently angry and the volcano was in the middle of the island and he used the fire of the volcano to forge his works and Hephaestus was particularly strongly revered by the blacksmiths and was considered the patron saint of this craft. With his equivalent of him from the Roman mythology, Vulcan, it behaves similarly and he is also said to have had a forge inside a volcano and according to legends he had his workshop in the underground of Mount Etna and here too, people thought that eruptions were a sign of his power. Hephaestus appears in another legend as the architect of an underground house and it is rather unknown in Greek mythology, but he was also considered the creator of a huge underground palace which he created for King Oenopion as a gift because he had once supported him and there are legends that Oenopion even had an underground forest.
