My opinion about Raising Voices || Mi opinión sobre Ni una más🩵🎬

Last week I marathoned a new Netflix miniseries called "Ni una más" (“Raising Voices”), only eight chapters to narrate the shocking story that involves several teenage girls, where scenes are presented to raise public awareness about important, difficult and sadly common issues in society such as: gender violence or sexual harassment. And although the series is not exaggeratedly good, and has many flaws, at least it is entertaining enough to keep you watching each of the chapters, and at least generate curiosity to know in depth about the facts that are narrated.

La semana pasada hice maratón de una nueva miniserie de Netflix llamada "Ni una más", solo ocho capítulos para narrar la impactante historia que envuelve a varias adolescentes, donde se presentan escenas para concientizar al público acerca de temas importantes, difíciles y tristemente comunes en la sociedad como: la violencia de género o el acoso sexual. Y aunque la serie no es exageradamente buena, y tiene varios fallos, al menos sí es lo suficientemente entretenida para mantenerte viendo cada uno de los capítulos, y al menos generar curiosidad para conocer en profundidad sobre los hechos que se narran.

A series based on the novel by Miguel Sáez Carral, which tells part of the story of Alma, a 17-year-old girl, who will soon finish high school with her friends Greta and Nata. Each of them faces typical adolescent problems, but as the story progresses these problems become more and more serious, from substance abuse to school and sexual harassment; conflicts so serious that they even involve a police investigation. In the quest to denounce the sexual aggression she experienced, a young girl finds the need to open an Instagram account to relate her traumatic experience, until some students from the same institution recognize the structure of the school in several Instagram posts, and denounce it to the teachers. Who is the victim? Who is the aggressor? What happened? And how Alma and her friends are involved in this case?

Una serie basada en la novela de Miguel Sáez Carral, que narra parte de la historia de Alma, una joven de 17 años, que pronto culminará el bachillerato junto a sus amigas Greta y Nata. Cada una se enfrentan a problemas típicos adolescentes, pero a medida que avanza la historia dichos problemas se van convirtiendo en más y más graves, desde el consumo de sustancias hasta el acoso escolar y sexual; conflictos tan graves que incluso involucró una investigación policial. En la búsqueda de denunciar la agresión sexual que vivió, una joven se ve en la necesidad de abrir una cuenta de Instagram para relatar su traumática experiencia, hasta que unas estudiantes de la misma institución reconocen la estructura del colegio en varias publicaciones del Instagram, y lo denuncian a los profesores. ¿Quién es la víctima? ¿Quién es el agresor? ¿Qué sucedió? ¿Y cómo Alma y sus amigas están involucradas en este caso?

In the series we see familiar faces of actors from other teen movies from streaming platforms, that despite not really liking those movies, I admit that I liked the work those actors did in this series, it improved a lot in comparison, like the main actresses: Nicole Wallace, who plays Alma, and Clara Galle, who gives life to Greta. On several occasions I connected with the characters and their situations, I felt fear and anguish, I was worried about what I saw, and the hardest thing of all is that they were not "extraordinary" situations, that is, despite the evil they are common situations in society. Understanding that this happens more often than we think, helps us to open our minds and pay more attention to our surroundings.

Teachers who abuse their power to get close to their female students, bullying of vulnerable students, public sharing of intimate photos of other people. Even the consequences of one's own decisions, such as substance abuse, having sex under the influence of alcohol, performing risky acts such as breaking into strangers' cars, little things that are obviously dangerous, but still continue to be done without conscience. I thought it was very important to emphasize "what can happen if...", and to raise awareness among teenagers.

En la serie vemos caras conocidas de actores de otras películas adolescentes de plataformas de streaming, que a pesar de realmente no gustarme dichas películas, admito que me gustó el trabajo que hicieron esos actores en esta serie, mejoró mucho en comparación, como las actrices principales: Nicole Wallace, quien interpreta a Alma, y Clara Galle, que le da vida a Greta. En varias ocasiones conecté con los personajes y sus situaciones, sentí miedo y angustia, estaba preocupada por lo que veía, y lo más difícil de todo es que no eran situaciones “extraordinarias”, es decir, a pesar de la maldad son situaciones comunes en la sociedad. Comprender que esto pasa más a menudo de lo que creemos, nos ayuda a abrir nuestra mente y prestar más atención a nuestro entorno.

Profesores que abusan de su poder para acercarse a sus alumnas, acoso escolar a estudiantes vulnerables, compartir públicamente fotos íntimas de otras personas. Incluso las consecuencias de decisiones propias, como el consumo de sustancias, mantener relaciones sexuales bajo los efectos del alcohol, realizar actos de riesgo como entrar al auto de desconocidos, pequeñas cosas que son obviamente peligrosas, pero aun así se siguen realizando sin consciencia. Me pareció muy importante recalcar "lo que puede pasar si...", y sensibilizar al público adolescente.

Although, as I mentioned before, from my point of view the series has several flaws, especially because in the course of the chapters the most important thing is lost: the essence of the main story. There are numerous alternative stories that, although relevant, overshadow the main victim's cry for help. We don't want one more story about teenagers consuming drugs and alcohol, with toxic relationships and conflicts with their parents, there is already too much similar content, some very good and others mediocre; the audience needs something more natural and raw, that allows them to open their eyes and sympathize with these situations. And not only targeting a teenage audience, because I feel that most of them know these situations, it is equally (or even more) significant to try to target an adult audience, generations that still fail to assimilate what is happening in society, but are fundamental to support young people on this path.

Aunque, como mencioné anteriormente, desde mi punto de vista la serie cuenta con varios fallos, especialmente porque en el transcurso de los capítulos se pierde lo más importante: la esencia de la historia principal. Hay diversas historias alternativas que, aunque son relevantes, hacen que quede opacada ese grito de auxilio de la víctima principal. No queremos una historia más de adolescentes consumiendo drogas y alcohol, con relaciones tóxicas y conflictos con sus padres, ya hay demasiado contenido similar, algunos muy buenos y otros mediocres; el público necesita algo más natural y crudo, que le permita abrir los ojos y simpatizar con estas situaciones. Y no solo dirigirse a un público adolescente, porque siento que la mayoría de ellos conocen estas situaciones, es igualmente (o incluso más) significativo intentar dirigirse a un público adulto, generaciones que aún no logran asimilar lo que está sucediendo en la sociedad, pero son fundamental para apoyar a los jóvenes en este camino.

That point makes the series a bit superficial, since there were very good themes that could be exploited and made the most of, but they covered them as it is always done in almost all series. There was no deep development that would lead to a worthy denouement. Sadly, it does not have that something that makes the series unforgettable or more relevant.

Also, so many alternate storylines do not allow the characters to develop properly. Being only eight chapters, the ending feels very fast and inconclusive, you don't know what happened to all those characters and their stories. Also, with the name "Ni una más" ("Not one more"), a significant phrase in feminist protests, you would think that the series focuses on the denunciation of a case of sexual violence (or at least, I started watching it with that idea), but this is only mentioned at the end, it is resolved in a dramatic way, without development or details, and that's it. The victim herself, the center of everything, was left as a secondary character. If the series had another name, if it were presented as another teenage story like Euphoria or Élite, there would be no problem, but don't try to advertise it by mentioning gender violence or sexual abuse, when you only take into account these arguments in the last three chapters.

Ese punto hace que la serie se torne un poco superficial, dado que había muy buenos temas que podían explotar y sacarle el mayor provecho, pero los abarcaron como siempre se hace en casi todas las series. No hubo un desarrollo profundo que lo llevara a un desenlace digno. Tristemente, no tiene ese algo que haga a la serie inolvidable o más relevante.

Así mismo, tantas historias alternas no posibilitan que se desarrollen adecuadamente los personajes. Al ser solo ocho capítulos, el final se siente muy rápido e inconcluso, no sabes qué pasó con todos esos personajes y sus historias. Además, con el nombre de "Ni una más", una frase significativa en las protestas feministas, se pensaría que la serie se centra en la denuncia de un caso de violencia sexual (o al menos, yo comencé a verla con esa idea), pero esto solo se menciona al final, se resuelve de forma dramática, sin desarrollo ni detalles, y listo. La misma víctima, el centro de todo, quedó como un personaje secundario. Si la serie tuviera otro nombre, la presentaran como otra historia adolescente al estilo de Euphoria o Élite, no habría problema, pero no intentes hacerle publicidad mencionando la violencia de género o abuso sexual, cuando solo tienes en cuenta estos argumentos en los últimos tres capítulos.

But hey, they're not the first and won't be the last producers to make use of false advertising to get the public's attention. Is it annoying? Yes, for quite some time you are left waiting for that event you imagine because of the name, and it's just more of the same. But is the series that bad? Not really. It's entertaining and short, for hanging out it's not bad, and as I said, the performances are decent. It's only disappointing because you expect something more that doesn't come, but there are worse titles on Netflix.

Similarly, there are small details that are rescued. For example, the importance of parental support in the lives of their children, we see the positive difference in Alma's life when she improves her relationship with her parents; likewise, how necessary it is to have good friends who accompany you and wish you well; and especially, the action that Alma takes at the end, as a way to protest against the institution and the crime that happened in its facilities, I think it was a good way to do it. She didn't cause disaster or damage to draw attention, but she found a way to raise her voice for the victim and get justice. And it was even very moving how the students supported her protest, giving that meaning that you are not alone, it is true that when you decide to expose your situation unfortunately there will be many people seeking to discredit you, either by lack of information or simple ignorance and human insensitivity, but there will also be many who will listen to you and support you in your cause.

Pero bueno, no son los primeros ni serán los últimos productores que harán uso de una falsa publicidad para llamar la atención del público. ¿Es molesto? Sí, por bastante tiempo te quedas esperando ese suceso que imaginas debido al nombre, y es solo más de lo mismo. ¿Pero es tan mala la serie? La verdad no. Es entretenida y corta, para pasar el rato no está mal, y como ya dije, las actuaciones son decentes. Solo es decepcionante porque esperas algo más que no llega, pero hay peores títulos en Netflix.

De igual manera, hay pequeños detalles que se rescatan. Por ejemplo, la importancia del apoyo de los padres en la vida de sus hijos, vemos la diferencia positiva en la vida de Alma cuando mejora la relación con sus padres; igualmente, lo necesario que es tener buenas amistades que te acompañen y deseen tu bienestar; y especialmente, la acción que realiza Alma al final, como manera de protestar en contra de la institución y el crimen que sucedió en sus instalaciones, me parece que fue una manera de hacerlo. No ocasionó desastre ni daños para llamar la atención, pero encontró la manera de alzar la voz por la víctima y conseguir justicia. E incluso fue muy emotivo como los estudiantes apoyaron su protesta, dando ese significado de que no estás sola, es cierto que cuando decides exponer tu situación lamentablemente habrá muchas personas buscando desacreditarte, ya sea por falta de información o simple ignorancia e insensibilidad humana, pero también habrá muchos que te escucharán y apoyarán en tu causa.

And that would be all for this occasion✨ It is not a series that I would recommend watching to everyone, as I have done with others, since as I explained to you, most of it is teen drama, and there are many people who already enjoy this type of content to us. However, if you have nothing to watch, are a bit bored, and want to suffer a bit with the angst of certain situations that are presented, I would recommend watching it. It's not a bad series, it's better developed than others, it's just not outstanding, but it does entertain.

Y eso sería todo por esta ocasión✨ No es una serie que recomendaría ver a todos, como he hecho con otras, dado que como te expliqué, la mayor parte es un drama adolescente, y hay muchas personas que ya nos disfrutan de este tipo de contenido. Sin embargo, si no tienes nada que ver, estás un poco aburrido, y quieres sufrir un poco con la angustia de ciertas situaciones que se presentan, te recomendaría verla. No es una serie mala, está mejor desarrollada que otras, simplemente no es resaltante, pero sí entretiene.
