La súplica de Nancy/ Nancy's plea

(Edited)

Saludos, queridos lectores.

No pude aceptarlo.

Nancy's plea

*Greetings, dear readers. Continuing with my narrative proposal about Oliver Twist, a few days ago I published a fictional story about Bill Sikes, one of the most emblematic characters of the work. The following is a story starring the beloved and long-suffering Nancy, who was his companion.

I could not accept it. Much as I wanted to, I was already doomed. My life had been one of neglect and abuse since I was a child. If it was that old man, old Fagin, who took me off the streets and gave me a roof to live under, it was at my own expense....

Fagin, as I said, gave me everything, or rather, he sold me to the highest bidder and I had to follow him. I grew up in poverty and misery and had to learn to defend myself against those who wanted to get ahead of me.

You can imagine the joy I felt when I saw this poor, helpless child. In a way, he reminded me of me, because his innocence was still intact. I wanted to protect him, but I made a mistake. It was better to leave him where he was and not bring him back. It was better to let him be happy.

Something in me wanted that not to happen. If I was going to suffer, he should suffer too. Of course, after what I did, I regretted it. That's why I went to see that great lady, that great gentleman, to tell him everything that had happened and what they planned to do with him.

Despite their offers, I could not accept them. Sikes... Sikes is everything, he was everything to me. I spent most of my life with him. A child? I was never a child. I never was. I wasn't even a woman. I was an object to everyone. To Fagin, to Sikes, but Oliver... Oliver was the only one who treated me with tenderness and affection.

Maybe that's why he awakened in me all those feelings I thought I no longer had. Maybe that's why I risked my life and suffered in the end. Maybe that's why... maybe that's why my suffering and torment is over and I find myself in a better place than I ever imagined, not even in my best dreams.
