Grilled Cheese with Mayo

Have you ever made a grilled cheese sandwich?

Perhaps culturally this is not as much of a thing outside of the USA. Probably one of the easiest and laziest foods out there to make. Put cheese between two pieces of bread, butter the outside, and fry it in a pan on both sides till the cheese melts. Simple.

But what if I told you, you could substitute mayonnaise for butter on the outside? Someone told me this a couple of months ago and I was like, "Wow that sounds nasty." How could this possibly be a thing? There's no way this can be real. How can it be? Been on this Earth near 40 years and never heard of such a thing. Fake news. Veto.

But if you think about it logically mayo is basically just oil and eggs. Like butter, the main ingredient is simply: fat. So I decided to give it a whirl. Not for myself of course. The girlfriend asked me to make her one. She can be the Guinea Pig; that's fine. It's your funeral, friend.

The first one I made took an abnormal amount of time because the heat was too low. I hate to burn a grilled cheese, so I often use a lower heat setting to make sure the cheese actually melts before the bread & butter burn on the outside. Turns out mayo is a lot harder to burn than butter, so I spent like twice as much time making the thing as I normally would. The cheese melted long before the outside had any crisp to it whatsoever. I vowed that next time I would use medium heat (5/10): the same setting I would use to cook meat.

That worked out just fine.

The second time around, using a higher heat setting (that might burn butter) worked shockingly well. Very consistent. Looking at it and consuming it I could not tell it was made with mayo instead of butter. Learn something new everyday, amirite?

Turns out the mayo version is superior to butter:

  • Mayo doesn't burn like butter does.
  • It's difficult to tell the difference between both versions.
  • If butter is cold it's almost impossible to spread it onto bread.
    • Mayo is always near-liquid and easy to apply to bread.
  • There's an argument to be made that mayo is more "healthy" than butter.
    • Less saturated fat by a factor of x5.
      • Saturated fat can lead to high cholesterol and other problems.

Of course eating fat, bread, and cheese could never be deemed 'healthy' by any reasonable standard, and there is an argument to be made that mayo is more processed and has a lot of weird ingredients contained therein. That's not really the point though. The point is that something that sounded disgusting at first is now likely my personal standard.

And I got to thinking... you know that's a lot like crypto.

But in all seriousness this is exactly like crypto, especially now during the middle of the bear market. From the outside looking in, crypto is looked at as this disgusting scam. It's not real. How could it possibly be real; look how absolutely absurdly ridiculous it all is! And yet we all know it to rightfully be the superior version, despite the flaws.

It isn't worthy of its own post, but Litecoin has been outperforming the market lately, and I see this as a very VERY good sign of things to come. Users are finally coming to the realization that the shiny new thing in crypto usually turns out to be hot garbage, exposed by the receding tides of the bear market. Established networks that have been grinding this entire time are beginning to get the recognition they deserve. An apparent consolidation is occurring in which many are making the transition from get rich quickly to the slow grind that is true wealth-building. It's nice to see.

This same logic applies to Hive.

If we can assume that Hive has bottomed here that means we just tripled the floor in comparison to where we were in 2021. Even though it's depressing to look at the 90% dip from peak to trough, the real gains are made when comparing the bottom of each bear market. This network has never escaped the dreaded 10-15 cent ultra-support level before. If we can hold this level without dropping below 30 cents, that's a huge win, especially considering the inflation and yield that Hive provides its users.

Ew: Volatility. Ew: Mayo.

Yes, the volatility of crypto is a helluva thing. We celebrate it during the bull market and damn it to hell during the bear market. However, it is not the market's fault that we are personally irresponsible and refuse to hedge our bets: instead opting to take on even more risk, usually at the worst possible times.

As the Titanic sinks, waves are generated. Those waves are hitting our crypto lifeboats and even knocking people out of the lifeboats who aren't property strapped in. Imagine being the people still on the titanic who see the lifeboats as a scam. Hopefully by the time that beast sinks into the icy waters we have enough space on the lifeboats to rescue everyone, but the hard truth of the matter is that we probably won't. This can be spun in two different ways. We can either be happy about it because there's nothing we can do and they 'deserved it', or we can be sad about it and admit that tragedy should probably not be celebrated. It's all a matter of perspective.

At the end of the day crypto does not seem like a viable option to many citizens who simply don't know any better. Most people trust authority. Most people trust what they are told. They trust the 'experts' and the words from the magic box on the wall. However, an obvious paradigm shift is coming, and trust is becoming the ultimate commodity as the establishment crumbles while citizens start to wake up to the unfortunate reality.

It's up to people like us to change the narrative. The degenerate casino that is crypto definitively needs a makeover. We need more responsible players willing to lower the risk of this space without crippling the reward. Hive is on the right track in this regard, but many networks are traveling in the wrong direction. Try to avoid these false idols.

Conclusion

I've done the impossible here.
I've compared crypto to mayonnaise.
I can die knowing that the world will never be the same.

You are good man! I love that twist there comparing mayonnaise to crypto, that's almost impossible but of course possible because you did it.

It's always hard to tell an original when the fake is available, the crypto world is filled with so many false or no bad players as you call it and it is very important that we don't just disregard information at the very first instant because there might just be something useful in it.

You tried using mayonnaise instead of butter even when you were sure that was absurd and in the end you realized you made the right choice. But then, only people with insight will take such steps, we always like our comfort zone, accepting the paradigm shift sometimes can be really hard but then, we might just be fortunate to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

And I agree with you on your comparison that the world can never be the same. Today one thing is the best and tomorrow its value is gone.
When it comes to food I eat what I enjoy most times I don't think about what is said about the food as far as it doesn't disturb me. I don't really like fat.

Mayo for grilled cheese is far superior, I've been doing it that way over the last decade or so. Another good use for mayo is chicken, gets it nice and brown if you're just pan frying it 😉

Nicely done.

If you can convince folks to use mayo to fry up a toasted cheese, perhaps you can convince 'em to make the change to Hive as well. Sharing on FB to my ever dwindling feed over there.

How can it be?

For as intelligent as you are sometimes you can be so coof. From a long ago vegetarian two pieces of white bread, mayo and colby cheese stacked between is oh so delicious. No grilling necessary but if you want to go there, and you obviously did, remember next time it isn't cheese stacked between to layers of bread, than slapped with butter, or mayo, it's one slice of buttered bread laid in a pan, cheese on top, with additional buttered piece of bread on top. Right after you flip it to toast the other side you take your spatula and slice it down the middle. Simplicity will get you everywhere, including a faster melt point.
