For sure staking is profitable on Hive blockchain and also second layer tokens. Curation is the key of the game here coupled with LPs participation on TribalDex.
According to hivestats.io my curation APR for the last seven days is about 7.7% for my 6,266.65 Hive Power which I don't think is bad.
Mine is currently 8.20% for 1166.34 Hive Power. It used to be around 14%, when I focused on to curate early. But nowadays I upvote what I like. I do not really pay attention to the age of post/comments I upvote. Other than the post/comment I upvote not being older than five days. But I heard that there is some kind of penalty, if the post/comment you upvote is older than one day. Whether this is true or not, I still upvote what I like. So I do not really care about the curation APR.
It's not actually a "penalty". The older the post is beyond the 24-hour period, the less you get from curation, since a percentage (affected by how old the post or comment has been before you voted within the 7-day voting period) of your upvote goes to the earlier voters.

I (almost) always curate (upvote) comments (and posts), with little regard to profit, even if the post or comment is already older than 5 days.
Indeed, there is some "penalty" (less curation returns) when you upvote a post or comment after 24 hours.
