I have a new goal in writing, and that is to be able to conjure up a thousand words about any topic in depression without the need for web page references, but the information has to be factual and credible and can be linked to a web page.

I feel that by gathering the information to have this ability, I will eventually be very knowledgeable about this topic.

Hello, my name is Dr Ebingo Kigigha, I am an aspiring psychiatrist. I hope to one day make a change in the world of depression and mental health by extension.

In this post I will be responding to the is by @npreeko on Twitter I saw that got a lot of buzzes.

I will be also responding to trending comments in the post.

Common complaint

Many patients have described depression as living in a dark hole. A hole that you can't get out of.

The writer at Aboutybrain.com Relmi Damiano described depression as a warm fuzzy blanket that sits on you and does not allow you to get up.

The likelihood that you are experiencing depression increases with the number, intensity, and duration of your symptoms. The signs and symptoms of depression differ from person to person, but there are some universal ones which can be triggered by a number of different factors including stress, anxiety and loneliness.

Depression affects a person's thoughts, emotions, and daily functioning. The risk that you have depression rises as the frequency, severity, and duration of your symptoms increase. There are several symptoms and signs of depression that we might observe in ourselves and others
Note Depression is a significant suicide risk factor.

When a depressed person raises concerns about a possible threat to their life, this should be taken very seriously. Intervention and aid could perhaps save their lives.

Symptoms of depression

A decline in interest in routine activity. Your previous interests, pastimes, social activities, or sex is no longer important to you.

A change of more than 5% of body weight in a month indicates significant weight loss or gain. Oversleeping or insomnia, particularly waking up early in the morning. Sleep Alterations.

I honestly don’t know what it feels like to not have a bit of lingering depression. Makes me sad to type that out loud.

I was genuinely happy about this comment because a lot of people do not recognise that depression is a disabling condition but have the most opinions about it.

At the same time, some of the people who are so opinionated are not in the best places in their lives and could benefit from therapy but they only get to feel better when they give negative feedback about what they really do not understand.

I read a post that said, "people do not fake depression, they fake being okay". While in actuality malingering is real, it should be the very last differential diagnosis if you are a good practitioner.

Causes of Depression

Clinical depression can accompany many other physical problems in the body--or it can manifest on its own. Areas that we now know to play a major role in depression include the amygdala, the hippocampus and the thalamus.

In one study, depressed women had a smaller hippocampus compared to women who were not depressed. Using brain imaging techniques such as SPECT, scientists are able to map the brain by measuring the density and distribution of neurotransmitter (the chemicals in your brain) receptors.

Tips

Preventing depression is better than having to treat depression.

Depression can strike anyone, and it could be your parent, your boss, your child or your gym coach. The process instead may involve combinations of therapy, meditation, lifestyle changes (including diet and exercise), doctor visits, pharmaceuticals and other treatments, including neurofeedback. If you see someone struggling, or if someone's behaviour has changed (remember, people often hide the symptoms of depression), reach out to them.

Hive stories

Whenever I read a post that appears under the search tag "depression", I get motivated to do more.

Today's post is by @creativemary, In her post, she talked about getting through a mean break-up with a toxic boyfriend.

She started living in a hair saloon where she gathered money all the while posting on Hive.

I'm really glad she was able to pull through, I hope her story can inspire you to get out of whatever rot you might be in right now and start working for a better life ahead. Just know that it is possible and that you can do it.

If however you've been trying to get up and handle things for yourself and it has not been effective, you should try to visit a primary health care provider so they can give you the required help you need.

Questions

  • How has fighting depression made you a better person?
  • What advice would you give to a person who can't seem to get up and function normally because of depression?
  • If you had a friend who was dealing with depression where would you take them to?

Depression is real, so many situations in life could lead to depression if not handled appropriately. The best solution is to seek help as soon as symptoms of depression begins to spring forth.

Yeah. In medicine, we usually have a waiting period of 2 weeks to properly seperate sadness from depression.
