Under the mistletoe
I sat confused not knowing what to do, I was trying hard to think above the noise and chatter in the boardroom as we all waited for our chairman to walk in so that the meeting could commence. Everyone wondered what the new chairman would look like, there were rumors that he had certain interests that were quite different from that of other normal people but I did not care less, I just wanted this meeting to be over any moment soon so that I could quickly pick my father up from the airport.
I felt a hand tap me on my shoulder bringing me out of my musical world, one I had created in my head by putting my air buds in my ear and closing my eyes. I opened my eyes; ready to shoot whoever it was a long look but the eyes that I saw were strange, deep emerald green that I had never seen before. I sat up quickly in order to get a better look at the person and that was when I noticed my blunder.
The new chairman moved to his seat at the head of the table, I could see the fear in everyone’s eyes and the amusement in his. With a wave of his hand he said; “Please take your seats everyone”, I felt relief immediately seeing as he had forgot about my existence.
His face was magnificent, like it had been sculpted; his lips were so beautiful that the urge to suddenly wet them with mine made a mad rushing feeling go down my spine. I quickly cautioned myself, knowing that this was not a proper thought to have at the moment even though I thought our eyes had met a couple of times as the managing director shoved agenda upon agenda into his hands.
I was more than shocked when he mentioned my name, I sat briefly expecting him to realize his mistake and call someone else but then I noticed that the attention of every person in the room was drawn to me, I stood up quickly knowing that he had not made any mistake. “Yes Sir” I said as I stood up smoothening the creases on my skirt, “You will be my assistant during my two week journey to Poldovia for the winter advertisement contract meeting” he said with a mischievous glint in his eyes. I hoped that it would be a joke, because I did not know what I was going to do if it was not.
“So what did you do immediately he said that?” my father asked me as we made dinner that evening in the kitchen of our big house, a thing that had become a norm since my mother’s death. “Nothing dad, I did not do anything, I just stood and stared till he left the board room. Fortunately though, the trip is just for a week and hopefully so far there is no snow storm, I will come home on the 24th to blow out the candles and watch the fireworks with you” My father looked at me softly as he listened to me, “What is it dad?” I asked, concerned at his reaction to what I said, “You know dear, your mother will not mind if I watch the fireworks alone for one year”, “What is it dad, where is all this coming from?” I asked more puzzled by his questions . “Nothing dear, just enjoy yourself to the fullest in Poldovia and do not run back home just because you want to see some fire works and light candles with me.
The journey to Poldovia was not an easy one, there was a blizzard and seeing as I had never flown out of the country before; I was mostly airsick. I woke up in a very airy room the next morning not wondering how I got there because I knew I had been too sick to walk, what puzzled was where my boss slept, I was shocked to see him walk out of the bathroom donned with only a towel, I covered myself with the blanket so he would not notice I was awake and also to hide my blushing face as he dressed and ordered food over the telecom at the same time because I knew at that moment that I had spent the night with him on his bed.
The strange feeling I was having came into play when we went site seeing in the woods. My boss thought it would be nice for him to show me the forest where the christmas trees were grown, it was a beautiful scene with so many reindeer and animals I had only seen on television, the leaves were lush green and all I wanted to do was roll in the snow downhill. Suddenly while we were walking down, I noticed that the woods suddenly became unusually dark, like the sky had been covered with a red cloth, I was frightened and I clutched on my boss’s arm like a scared child; all he did however was smile and reassure me that everything was fine, “The elves are coming”, was all he said when he noticed fear in my eyes
I could not believe my ears and eyes, if my dad had told me that this was what to expect in Poldovia, I would have taken it for an incredulous old man’s tale. The trees were suddenly lit with a thousand beautiful lights as the elves walked past. “What are they doing sir?” I asked my boss as they circled the trees surrounding us, my boss looked at me tenderly as he took hold of my arm and said, “Please cease calling me Sir; Maria. My name is Jason and it’s not as if you have not seen my chest before”, my cheeks colored scarlet suddenly as he made the statement, “Don’t feel embarassed love, I feel the same, right from the first time we met in the office and that was why I brought you here during christmas so that the elves can help me ascertain if you are the one I have been waiting for all my life and they have”.
I felt happy but I was also confused, “How do you know that sir?”, “Because we are under the mistletoe and the fairy lights came on immediately the elves circled the tree. There's just one thing though”, he said smiling mischievously, “What?” I asked smiling back at him, “You have to kiss me”and so I kissed him like my life depended on it. Thanks to the elves I now had a merry christmas to spend with someone I loved.
This is a novel application of the prompt. Elves help two people discover if they are meant for each other. Love blossoms in a strange land.
