Planting a Market Friday

avatar

This is my almost-local nursery. I used to get overwhelmed when coming here. It is a large store, but, the abundance of plants is staggering. I used to get in there and either buy the store out of go home with nothing because I couldn't make up my mind. To be fair, there is a beginning and end to it all, I just never take it in all at once. It is much safer that way. It is privately owned and operated by the same family for generations. There are three stores in the Washington, DC area and I visit them all when I am in their neighborhood, but, chose the one closest to me today. Not because it is the closest, but, because when it is spring, variety is their specialty. The people there are knowledgeable and have taught me much useful information regarding my gardens, the plants and the care of them. There are two employees that have been giving me photography tricks and one girl who gives me tips on life. (Some are pretty good too!) So, it is really a one-stop-shop. In case I forgot to say it, welcome to #MarketFriday!

IMG_9758.JPG

First things first. I find my way to the greenhouse that has geraniums.I love the geranium, especially the Ivy variety. The regular geraniums grow tall and upright, the Ivy Geranium hangs down and makes for a lovely sight. The regular geranium has soft leaves and the Ivy have a smaller and waxy/shiny leaf. I love planting them in window pots for the sills and letting them grow long all summer long. I just looked at the price and they have gone up (again) since last year, just like everything else has. They are $7.95 for a 5-inch pot, some are $8.95, depending on the color. I liked the expensive ones, of course. I am happy that I overwintered the ones I had and all but one made it through the winter, so I only need to replace the one.

They come in a variety of colors, but, this one above is my favorite color, not quite red, yet darker than pink. A celebration of the in-betweens, varying in color from white to shades of pink where others are the brightest and deepest of reds to violet. Who grows geraniums at their house? More than a few, I am guessing.

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

IMG_0030.JPG

The double pleat blackberry columbine. I bought it for the very first time three years ago - it was love at first sight! I was appalled at their price, but, bought one large pot. I was shopping in the perennial house as they keep their annual flowers and perennials separate. It makes less confusion when people are buying. I was very excited to see these and I collected seeds at the end of the season, I sent them to both of my sisters. They loved them and started them a while back, so we should be about even in the growth charts. I gave them all my seeds, so I needed to get another one this year. Next year, I will have dried more seeds and will try growing them myself.I love the unusual shape of them! Have you ever seen these?

IMG_0014.JPG

I thought they were expensive last year. $14.99 seems pretty steep but, it is 4 quarts.(3.79 L) If they do well again, it will be worth every penny. There is always that off chance that they will not. Life should not be always about how much things cost unless it is above your budget. If it is within your budget, I balance my needs and wants, depending on the joy I will get out of it.

IMG_9986.JPG

You see the words annual and perennial on plant tags and in garden books. What do these terms mean and why should you care? Simply put, annual plants die in the winter season. You must replant them every year. Perennials come back every year. An annual is a plant that lives for just one season. Whether you plant from seed or purchase seedlings to plant, an annual will sprout, flower, seed, and then die — all in the same year. Annuals tend to bloom all season long and are often bright and showy. Though you will have to replant next year (or choose another plant to put in your annual’s place), annual plants tend to cost less than perennials and are less of a commitment.Perennials, on the other hand, live for three or more growing seasons. They are less work than annuals because they grow back each year from roots that go dormant in the winter. They will be around from year to year, so they put their energy into growing strong roots instead of growing lots of flowers like annuals do. source

It is hard to not get distracted while I am here. Coffee to be had in their little cafe and choices to be made on flowers. I am redoing some of my gardens this year, moving things around, swapping some plants from one house to another house. It will be a busy spring, but... it all starts here. Have you got your plants in pots yet?

IMG_9187.JPG

They have started giving a discount already. That seems suspicious to me, the season has just begun, but, I am not going to complain about 50% off! I'm not crazy. If you were looking for herbs, I think this is the best price I had seen. I had started a few from seed, but, I needed more parsley and thyme. The rest of them, I had already started a while back. So now I was complete. Has anyone noticed how expensive herbs and spices have gotten??

IMG_9913.JPG

I am intrigued by different cultures. It has always fascinated me and I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace, or even an art gallery, a kite festival, or any kind of local festival. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise! Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market!

IMG_9241.JPG

I have to be honest with you. The minute I saw some of these hats,I immediately thought of Dan @bluemoon and his granddaughter Ilinca. She is not quite two, but, she loves to take his hat and wear it. It is so adorable and she looks like an angel in it. See here It was because of this post, I was passing these hats and thought how nice it would look on both of them. Funny how things like this trigger other thoughts. Dan and I have never met in real life, but, we have known each other through over a half dozen social sites. It has been a pleasure to share my life and how he has shared his. I know, it's #MarketFriday and here I am hawking friendship, yes?

IMG_0005.JPG

These are bleeding hearts. My dad used to tell me I had a bleeding heart and when I left home, he came to visit the very first spring with a tray of bleeding hearts. Ha! I like them because they come back, year after year, but, be careful! They spread and spread...and then they spread a little more. Oh, my heart! My bleeding bleeding heart.

Merrifield.jpg

The nursery has acres and acres of plants, trees, bushes, and various fountains and pottery. You can hire their landscaping services and they will plan your garden or plant a tree. All for a price, of course.

Center Crest.png

Using a Chiminea as a Flower Planter is a great idea, especially if you have an old one that you no longer use. "A chimenea /tʃɪmɪˈneɪ. ə/, also spelled chiminea (from Spanish: chimenea which derives from French cheminée, "chimney"), is a freestanding front-loading fireplace or oven with a bulbous body and usually a vertical smoke vent or chimney." I used the real dictionary for that one.

Please leave the link to your post here so it can easily be found by others. It helps you and me to have them in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you so much for joining us!! ❤

IMG_9207.JPG

And just like that, this post is done. I hope you had a good time and learned a little something new. As always, I want to thank you for taking the time to visit, and just remember, #MarketFriday loves you! Thank you for supporting the challenge! Have a most fabulous day! Cheers!!

IMG_0212.JPG

Who can resist the fountains? I know I cannot. They are sometimes a subtle piece or other times can be very dramatic, in looks or the way the water comes out. I have two of them, each one of them gives me such pleasure, as I sit at night and listen to the flow of water. I want to thank everyone, as I don't always get a chance. You have made #MarketFriday a great place to peruse. I am loving what I am seeing come in. Thank you, again and again.

As always, there must be flowers to color my world. Indeed, this post was filled to the brim, so we should all have an amazingly brilliant day!#alwaysaflower

Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made
By singing: "Oh, how beautiful!" and sitting in the shade
With statues on the terraces and peacocks strutting by;
But the Glory of the Garden lies in more than meets the eye.

Notice many "new users" on Hive? Not many, like this place is a disease. No outside communities bringing in new comers. No other sites having many links or no links to any articles from Hive on sites that show professional interests they view as noteworthy to a profession or hobby. Hive articeles are rare on reddit.com. Wouldnt people post on reddit.com with links to their articles attracting their own new following and groups? No crypto forums acknowledge Hive exists as a place to be either. Ever seen a person asking for support show a way to give support with HIVE listed as a supporting wallet address? Is there a world address on Hive for countries made more unfortunate because of Hive? Would a large Hive holder or large earner of Hive donate a LARGE amount of Hive to help support Ukraine? What? Support something thing that could attract unwanted media attention? Nothing to see here......I dont get out much though.

People are hiding exposure to Hive. People either play dumb, could be scared or intimidated, mislead or dont beilieve it. Maybe just not electronically cultured enough to know. Who knows. Its mostly fake with fake attention paid for by people with ill intentions as many do gloating in their own groups special mindset. Such a small town here to support this kind of high pay. Who is buying Hive tokens with no notable new user base coming in? People trying to buy this place as a grooming ground on the sly. Articles that arent in the interests of their own goals and views dont get much attention. I dont see many high paid articles I would put on a real news sites or link to as noteworthy. Be part of one of their groups and they groom you. They buy comment and article writers in ways that keep their lies hidden. Here to take our FREEDOMS completely in treason as the sacks of shit they are.

Most interest groups and businesses have discord rooms on the side because they wont talk here or more able to teach views there to shill out of public view. They can do odd stuff to you in discord rooms they cant do here. I’ve seen people get mugged and shaken down in discords, be careful while visiting new discords, even if they are a business. They shut down the discord room along with all of the evidence of their crimes the group around @fyrstikken and his discord server @steemspeak. They also hide behind skirts there while on the creep like they do in the new ones they are in.

The operators doing V2K with remote neural monitoring want me to believe this lady @battleaxe is an operator. She is involved in the same discord groups around @fyrstikken and friends. Her discord is Battleaxe#1003. Shes in some groups with seemingly detached characters that dont even acknowledge the others in the group, looking oddly staged. She starts projects and does nothing with it or the delegations after its used to sway people. Like @steempowertwins does<------fake along with her @teamgood <------fake. No substance in her comments and has a following that adores her for what? Life coach she is not nor is she insightful with any meaningful skills to follow. Ruler of pixie dust maybe? I would like for someone to show me but probably wont out fear maybe? @fyrstikken groups around him down voted me into censored and not viewable on my accounts as soon I told what they were doing.

I cant prove @battleaxe is the one directly doing the V2K and RNM. Doing it requires more than one person at the least. It cant be done alone. She cant prove she is not one of the ones doing V2K because she cant and could care less. I guarantee she knows this is going around and still wont prove it because she cant. Many of us here can prove what they have been doing to survive the past 5 years. What does she live off of? It definitely isnt in public view here.

I was drugged in my home covertly, it ended badly. They have been trying to kill me using RNM with applied V2K mental games while revealing as many accessories to the crime as they can. I bet nobody does anything at all. Ask @battleaxe to prove it. I bet she wont. Pretty serious accusations to just blow off and leave the crypto community hanging in fear of this danger.

They want me to believe the V2K and RNM in me is being broadcast from her location. And what the fuck is "HOMELAND SECURITY" doing about this shit? I think stumbling over their own dicks maybe? Just like they did and are doing with the Havana Syndrome. They should start by looking at the communications between the top witnesses of Hive and the connection to @fyrstikken groups. Google his fucking name and see where his other interests lie around at least once maybe? The connections between @fyrstikken groups and all the exchanges built for Hive? Bet that would reveal some crazy ball less nutty shit. Homeland security should start preparing for their own incarcerations seeing how sloppy this was done. Patriot act my ass. Think we are really fools? Bad position your not getting out of. Dont be last to blow the whistle. Who will protect you?

People in and around @fyrstikkens groups are reckless and should have shown the proper media what they had before taking me hostage for 5 long torturing years and counting. That is a long time to wait for someone to die.

What would you say while having a gun pointed at your head from an undisclosed location? Have people find it? My hands are tied while they play like children with a gun to my head. Its a terrorist act on American soil while some yawn and say its not real or Im a mental case. Many know its real. This is an ignored detrimental to humanity domestic threat. Ask informed soldiers in the American military what their oath is and why nothing is being done. Nobody has I guess. Maybe someone told ill informed soldiers they cant protect America from military leaders in control that have ill intent. How do we protect locked up soldiers prevented from telling the truth from being treated as criminals? Not to mention civilians we let our leaders treat the same way. https://ecency.com/fyrstikken/@fairandbalanced/i-am-the-only-motherfucker-on-the-internet-pointing-to-a-direct-source-for-voice-to-skull-electronic-terrorism-terrorism

I thought of you today. Our magnolias are in bloom and that almost never happens in consort with cherry blossoms. It is like we are being blasted with flowers.

I like blackberry columbines too:)

Beautiful Market Friday post! I love Geraniums, my mother-in-law has a big variety in her sun room. I’m going to try taking a few cuts this week. The only concern for me if is it allowed to take it on the plane:-)
It’s so nice that the store workers give all kinds of tips, they seem like a very helpful people.

How does your garden grow, with loads of !LUV that is for sure!

Nice mix of beautiful blooms to ready yourself for summer, inviting pollinators into the garden, I hope you start considering keeping honey bees too imagine tasting sweetness from ones own garden.

Enjoyed seeing the plants you select, only one I do know is the geranium which is native to South Africa.

Have a wonderful day Denise.

I do love a garden centre visit. I have to say I go most seasons (except for those few months they are closed) but this time of year is my favorite. Each week, sometimes just day's apart, the garden centre is another a new place as they get more and more goodies in!

I love columbine and need to get some new colors for my shade garden.

That Acer (japanese maple) in that one photo is stunning. We're lucky to have a Very old one here, I still amazed by it's size for an Acer, that a grandmother planted 70 years ago. I'm always taking it's seedlings and trying to get them to grow on.

Happy #marketfriday @dswigle

Wow, Denise, what a beautiful nursery, it's almost like the one I want to share this week although I looked more at their quaint gifts on offer. That blueberry columbine is simply stunning, in fact, all the flowers in your post are just gorgeous!
I love how they used that Chiminea as a planter! All in all, simply stunning!

Nice photos! Nurseries drive my crazy. Mostly because every time I try to go to one of the small locally owned ones I forget to take cash and they only take cash. So I spend all my time walking around finding what I want only to have to leave it at the counter because I don't have cash. Believe it or not it has happened to me more than once!

What a fabulous riot of colour. It takes a will of iron when I visit a nursery I'm inclined to buy way to many plants. Not this year though. Prices have gone stupid high.

Luckily we bought a load of seed last year and tend to go for perennials.

We do grow the seeds from store bought veg as well. Tomatoes, onions garlic and chilli are super easy. 🤯😘👍

The flowers there are neatly arranged, and the flowers are very beautiful for us to display around the house, can these flowers live in tropical countries?

I don't think I've seen that flower in the last photo.

I Love how you talk about your flowers, gardening is definitely one think I enjoy watching, but not doing, plants and I are not a good pair, I love them but I don't know how to care for them properly... I really like the blackberry columbine, looks so beautiful! I couldn't make a market Friday post today, but still wanted to step by and leave my comment, and wish you a very happy weekend!

You are so sweet!! Thank you! I think I ignore them more than I take care of them. When they need something I expect them to speak up and let me know, otherwise a little bit of water, a few words of love and we all are better for it. No worries about Market Friday it will be here next week or the week after whenever you get here!

Oh my gosh, I love nurseries! How fun. I am just so excited that planting season is coming. But it’s way too early in Minnesota. So I will just have to live vicariously through you!

I love geraniums too. They are so hearty! I have tons of planters and hsnging pits with geraniums all summer. You have a wonderful nursery. That’s so great that they have coffee. And hats!

Wow!!!!!! which store!!!! I would come there every other day just to walk among this magnificence!!!!! geranium! I need to take a closer look at this. I think I'm already ripe to hang flower pots on the balcony. Amazing purple flower!!!! I've never seen anything like it before. Wow! there are even pictures! I had the idea to grow my own mint, thyme, basil, etc. I even bought basil, but it died and I thought that in our climate it is probably too difficult. in our similar store there are also fountains.and it looks so beautiful among the variety of flowers

I love that there are so many choices, but also understand the fun difficulties of picking and choose, since at least for me, having some of everything is just not reasonable.

I haven't gone out looking yet, although I've seen some fb photos of friends that have bought a few already. We still could have a cold snap or two for another month and I don't have room inside to baby sit plants that long till they can go outside for good.

I saw the idea last year about the chimineas used for flowers and I LOVE that idea. I pictured myself buying a couple last year just for that, but then I never did. I'd love to have one on my back porch where I can see it out my back door and another for the yard where the deck meets the house. It would be perfect for that corner.

I do look forward to the day I can go flower shopping though and now you have reminded me to reconsider the chiminea thing.

It is always fun to go and pick a few annuals to mix in with the already popping up perennials! We may have a freeze Sunday night, and Monday (or Saturday and Sunday?) I haven't planted anything because of that, but, picked them up because the nursery will probably have less than last year. Transportation issues and people are back to work, most not at home (here) so less garden/home time. (You are so lucky! Ducky!)

Chimeneas were so popular in the Southwest, weren't they? Except most use them for their original purposes. It was us gringas changing the culture for our purpose. :) Anyway, I love them too! Oh, it was cold out this morning! Not here in the neighborhood, but, downtown was and it even snowed 10 flakes after the rain!

So that is the way the day went. Ha! Best laid plans....

Awesome photos Denise!! Looks like a big place and I know I would probably be tempted to buy more things than I have space for..lol. Great idea using the chimenea for plants. I know a couple people that bought one when when they were all the rage but now they mostly sit in a corner of their deck. I will have to show them your post. Honestly, those double pleat blackberry columbine are absolutely gorgeous!! Sometimes though you just gotta' treat yourself!! 😊💕
