Let's go to San Juan by Market Friday

IMG_5822.JPG

Plaza de Armas was designed and built as the main town square in Spanish Colonial Times. Welcome to Old San Juan, Puerto Rico! Looking at the above photograph, the town hall center is on left-handhand side of the plaza and the Department of State is on the right side. There are plenty of benches to sit, coffee to be had and pigeons to be fed.

Plaza de Armas (Arms Square) is one of the main squares and is enjoyed by the locals as a gathering place to see and be seen, have coffee, and cover the day's events, or life. Sometimes it was a market, sometimes a place to have military exercises. The four statues on the fountain were placed there from the four corners of the square and represent the four seasons.

IMG_5645.JPG

The Casablanca Hotel had nice accommodations. It had antique furniture and it looked like floors that were refinished, but, probably the original deal. Nice The location was convenient and the people there were nice and helpful. The service is exceptional and a 24-hour concierge, because, well, San Juan! The price was $145.00 for three people. You might be able to get it cheaper, but, I didn't actually shop around because it was only two nights and it was right where I needed it. The address is 316 C. de la Fortaleza, San Juan.

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

IMG_5727.JPG

Old San Juan is the oldest city established in Puerto Rico. It is easy to believe as all you have to do is spin in a circle and see the architecture. I was amazed at the beauty and how distinctly different the sections were. However, I should say that the building reflects the architecture from four different centuries. In case you didn't read it, I was lamenting living in one of those apartments with a balcony, looking down at the people, surrounding myself with all that is green. And blooming. You know. #alwaysaflower Who could resist?

IMG_5653.JPG

There are free trolleys at the Covadongag bus station and makes their way around all of the popular tourist attractions. Need to get back? Go to a bus stop, but make sure that it has the trolley sign, otherwi,se you will be getting on tpaid-or the us. That can be fun too. (insert sarcasm here) The bus fare is $0.75 and the light rail is $1.50, but you have to purchase a transit pass at any Tren Urbano station. The bus stops at the station between towns and stops to pick up people who are walking. So, don't be in a rush, just relax! They normally will stop in the town squares, so check your destination. If that doesn't work, take a taxi, but, negotiate your price and pay before you agree. This way, there is no misunderstanding or language barrier and nobody feels cheated.

IMG_5729 1.JPG

I must say that there is no lack of shopping here. I could walk up and down cobblestone streets and shop all day, or perhaps I wanted to say that shopping is available, but, I am not sure I could do it all day. I am sure it would be a challenge for any woman. Normally, buildings like these are commerce on the botton and apartments with blaconies on the top. We had those same kind of buildings back home in Connecticut in our downtown, but, the buildings were not as showstopping as these and the balcony was in the back. These here are stunning.

IMG_5731.JPG

Each building is a work of art, individual, it stands out on its own. Puerto Rico has museums that are world-renown, along with its street art. Just walk around and see the murals painted in the most unusual places. Is it just me being wowed by the lines, the materials used, the architectural lines that touch a place in my soul? I look at these structures and have to wonder how they could build this kind of beauty centuries ago, so far from their Spanish homeland, yet, they persevered and made it beautiful. I stand in awe.

IMG_5686.JPG

It was in the 1950s that the city leaders of San Juan wanted to tear down the tragically crumbling structures and intermingle some modern architecture to the city. The idea was flatly turned down and the renovation project began, keeping the Spanish flavor well intact. As I walk around when I am here, I can not see this city any other way than the Colonial beauty that she is.

IMG_5720.JPG

There are so many unique and artsy stores here, mixed in with bookstores. This little relic, the poet's passage is one of my favorities stops every single time. I bought a fun little house for one of my sisters. She has always admired my little houses my friend made for me, so I thought I might get her one of her own. I know she will love it.

IMG_5704.JPG

Mofongo is one of many dishes popular in Puerto Rico that people can enjoy from restaurants and food trucks. ... A predecessor of mofongo came from West and Central Africa, and was brought to Puerto Rico with the slave trade, according to Gozamos. The main ingredient is green plantain.

Mofongo is a Puerto Rican dish with fried plantains as its main ingredient. Plantains are picked green and fried, then mashed with salt, garlic, broth, and olive oil in a wooden pilón (mortar and pestle).Th e goal is to produce a tight ball of mashed plantains that will absorb the attending condiments and have either pork cracklings (chicharrón) or bits of bacon inside. It is traditionally served with fried meat and chicken broth soup. Particular flavors result from variations that include vegetables, chicken, shrimp, beef, or octopus packed inside or around the plantain orb. see here

IMG_5683.JPG

It looks like moving day!!

The streets are getting busy and the cars will be stacking up soon, and yet, the shopping will continue for the rest of the day. I will go find a nice shady spot to sit or a good book or even enjoy the sights, anything but shopping!

IMG_5599.JPG

The narrow cobblestoned streets are not unusual, but, the blue color of them is. The cobblestones reflect the color, especially in the rain and the night lights...and of course, they have a story that goes with it.

IMG_5608.JPG

The cobblestone (Adoquines) streets of Old San Juan are blue stone cast from furnace. slag which were brought over on Spanish ships as ballasts. The characteristic blue color comes from age and moisture. Becuase of their age, the Adoquines you will see around Old San Juan are cracked, faded and worn down due to high automobile traffic, these streets are part of a long Puerto Rican Heritage and they should be preserved by the closure of streets to automobile traffic.source

IMG_5601 mf.JPG

They never seem to tire of shopping, where their dollars go far and the merchandise is plenty. The tourist and the locals feel the streets, looking for that special something that will go home with them. You can walk forever and a day, the atmosphere is happy, I can hear singing in the back of me and in front of me. I am in the middle of a song.

IMG_5775.JPG

There are literally dozens and dozens opop-up restaurants, which I love! You don't see them during the day and the streets become pedestrian zones and the tables roll out to fee patrons. The streets are so narrow here, it is not uncommon at all. It is a little unnerving in the zones where they still drive and they cars get precariously close to the table.

IMG_5545.JPG

I have made it to the Riverwalk, wher you are free to walk along the promenade down there. During the evening, it is a romantic stroll along the water, the moom hanging out,

IMG_5771.JPG

This tree has fascinated me for years. It was listing for years andnow it sits on a step made especially for it, so the limmb doesn't drop to the ground. top-heavy now and sags from the weight. I forget how old it is, but, sadly, they won't let nature take its course and let it rest in peace. I am not sure how I feel about that.

IMG_5594.JPG

It's not uncommon anywere to see the menu posted outside to check it out, but, I will say that I love it, being able to see if it will be wasting my time and theirs by taking a seat and looking at the menu. Don't you arrpeciate that?

Center Crest.png

Welcome! You have come to the right place! He was so hard to resist, plus the aroma wafting on to the streets from there was heavenly. The menu is from the restaurant next door. The chef made something for us that he said we would never forget. I won't ever. I also will never remember what it was called or what was in it. As a woman who write everything down or puts it in her phone, I was a complete and utter failure. I'll just have to get punished and go back again.

IMG_5900.JPG

Oh, the allure of the beautiful city, San Juan. The cobblestones under my feet have made history and I have stepped on it. So much warmth within this city center. The people, the food... the feeling of being in a foreign, yet, it is my own. It has been lovely. I can hear her calling to come back soon. ❤️

You can walk forever and a day, the atmosphere is happy, I can hear singing in back of me and in front of me. I am in the middle of a song.

I wish that I could hear that in my country (in Hungary), but nowadays I hear something else because of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Hundreds of people are escaping/escaped from Ukraine to Hungary, because they fear from the compulsory enrollment.

I hope that this conflict/war will not affect our country much more seriously.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

It's in their nature to saying. They sing when they're happy oh, they sing when they are sad. Generally I would say that they are very happy people. Some live in extreme poverty and yet you never hear them complain. God bless them.

As for the Ukraine, I have no public answers but the whole situation makes me sad. I worry for your country also, taking in more than they can probably handle oh, but that is the nature of being a human being. It's hard to just slam the door in the face of people facing unknown circumstances. Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your words. My prayers go out to you and your country that a better resolution will be found. Have a great night!

Quaint cities still dressed in former charm should be cordoned off into street walkways considering they appear to have excellent public transport available.

Plantains I have only ever had in curries over here, these look/sound so interesting, something completely different.

Happy places where one is able to mingle, enjoy the sights and sounds even down to the cobblestone, lovely market and town walk Denise.

It is such a lovely place, Joan! @joanstewart They have made some streets into Walk Platz, but, so many are one vehicle wide for a two-way street. It is mostly because they are still using old roadways.

They do have public transportation, and I think it is pretty good, but, I wouldn't want to work here full time and try to make that work, delays can be 30-60 minutes.

Plantains are really, really good fried! Oh, my!! They make a great dessert here and in the Caribbean that will make your mouth water, and I don't eat sugar! Ha!

Thank you for stopping by and for the tipu! Much appreciated, Joan!

Always enjoy seeing any old town that is kept in good repair, a joy wondering around with atmosphere that sweeps you along.

Living in a place is always so different to visiting. We used to have reliable train system that is no more, times change one only realizes how much when living in one place.

The plantains sound delicious in the dessert form, certain food stores import them.

Living in South Africa we have an abundance in variety available, growing in a few of our provinces.

The Cavendish banana group, that is the biggest commercially grown banana, is represented by the following varieties: Chinese, Grand Nain, Hamakua, Valery and Williams.

The Brazilian bananas are made up of the Dwarf Brazilian, Bluefields and Dwarf Bluefields. source

My mom loved fried banana, not for me..., I think I would rather give that dessert a try 😅

!LUV and happy weekend to you and the family!

Nice shots of the city! The colorful buildings are very nice looking. The free trolly is a good idea for a tourist destination and the Mofongos sound delicious. I love plantains. I actually think I've been to San Juan once but nothing looks familiar in the photos. I think it was a stop on a cruise. Is there also an old fort on a hill by the water somewhere in the city?

Yes! But I've done the big tourist attractions, a few at a time, leaving me time to do the less than mundane. I haven't posted on them in a year. I've done the fort on the hill, Bacardi Factory, Raices Fountain, the huge abo e ground cemetery. This time, I just focused on walking around downtown.

Thanks for stopping by!

Hi. JJ !! @tattoodjay Silly man! Don't worry about it. I have been so busy, I didn't even notice. I didn't even finish last week's Market! :( To my credit (a small one, at the very most) I upvote and reposted everyone, now I need to keep at it till I finish the last few comments. What am I doing wrong? I need to reorganize or do something.

Have fun with the kids. You know this will be back when it gets quieter. They grow up and leave the nest before you know it!

Thanks so much!

What a lovely @marketfriday @dswigle and thank Goodness they didn't tear down and put up 'modern' in the 50s.

There is something always so enticing about wet cobbled streets especially when they are narrow and lined with such colorful amazing shops, such a place to visit. Thank you for this.

Have you been? It is such a lovely place. I just posted every day living in these shots, all the forts and statues and cemeteries and such have been covered in the first few posts. These I hadn't shown, but, only because there was nothing amazing about them, but, they still had some redeeming qualities. :)

Very much so! You would like any of the Caribbean Island/ Cuba/ Puerto Rico/ Bermuda/ Bahamas... you name it, any of them. Jamaica has too much crime nowadays.

But, if you like the historical aspect of it, you would really like it there. I hope you get to try it someday!

Wow! How interesting! I have never been there. I had no idea that there were such beautiful colorful houses! Puerto Rico seemed to me somehow much easier. You made the whole tour for us. Fried bananas with spices and shrimps??? 😮 Oh, I can't imagine this taste. I don't think it fits together very well 🙊😅 I also like it better when I can see the menu of the restaurant before I go inside and sit at their table. The tree is really very impressive! The yellow roses are gorgeous and I love your green glasses too! 😃

That fountain is nice. That tree is amazing. Here we have regulations against feeding of pigeons. I wonder if we are the only one who have it. Maybe kind of like the ban of chewing gum.
Anyway, this week pickup a bit of online shopping.

There are many places, especially in cities where they don't exactly ban feeding the pigeons no, but they frown upon it when they see somebody doing it. When I had my kids in a park in Poland, we got scolded by the Polish police for feeding the pigeons in the park. Paris was another place. They should ban chewing gum! We all know how that ended.

Thanks so much for stopping by and reading, then dropping your link! Have a great day Ace!

Nice! Like a travel blog, even more like a magazine article. That's why I did what I did in my youth when I found ( with difficulty) such a magazine. I used to look at the pictures! I looked with great pleasure at your photos, I liked most the narrow, cobbled streets, in the rain, at night... Strangely your post reminded me of my teenage years and youth when travel meant those magazines with glossy and perfect photos. I wasn't reading the explanatory text, I liked to dream that I was there too, with my story..., thank you!

I managed to post too, belatedly and with difficulty. With my eyes on the TV, on the news about the horror in Ukraine, a country neighboring Romania. What I'm posting about happened before the war started. A Sweet Market Completed on the Street

Hi, Dan! @bluemoon What a wonderful compliment! Of course, not close to a magazine article, but, it was fun thinking you thought so! :) Sometimes, it is fun to just look at the pictures and make up your own words. I have taken you to San Juan, so you know what it says. :)

Even though I had a free life growing up and travel was not a problem, I still love travel magazines and nature magazines. National Geographic was a very coveting magazine that my parents had a subscription to. Even though I get it online, I still get the magazine and leaf through it, just like when I was a kid! It was exactly there that I became fascinated and curious about parts of the world that I had never been to.

Even though it is not a neighboring country to me, I share your horror and hope the world does the right thing by the people of Ukraine. As you are a neighboring country, I am worried about what this means to Romania. Why is the world still like this? Are they not tired of living with the reign of terror? So now, the poor Russian people are suffering at home because they must protest and put themselves in danger to show how much they dislike what their government is doing. Please be safe and let us pray for those in the line of harm.

You and Magda stay safe!

Thanks for posting, Dan! I appreciate it!
