Emptying out the House

Everybody I am related to has been invited to a can-painting party,at some time during this visit. These cans are also known as the nutcracker cans. It is a tradition which I have shown to you before, and I did a few more. I tried to do a few before people went home, so they could have something to remember this year by. Normally I would give them something, but, this time, I made them make their own. Evil, yes? Here are a few and I show that you can use all sizes of cans and add raffia or even a handle. They are fun little gift ideas and I love to put some interesting things inside them..

Every year, it is the same. I went to my mailbox and there was a Christmas card with a beautiful message inside. There they are, aplogizing for being late and I am sitting with half of my cards still waiting for personal messages to be written. Oh, another year of being late. But, I have to admit, I love Christmas cards even in February. I found myself starting later this year, not making the special cards I always do, but, I did have some left over from last year and the rest got store bought cards! Oh, the horror! I am trying really hard to feel ashamed.Give me a minute or three. I know I have it in me.

Some of the siblings who didn't make it wrote long letters in their cards. It was heartwarming to read the recollections and memories of Christmas Eve spent among family, there was always a rotation of houses that were visited, family and friends alike. From one house to the next, progressive dinners... one would serve h'orderves and the next would serve the next course, until we finished dinner. It was wonderful and everyone got to share a piece of their house with one another. It was truly a wonderful time in life. How quickly time marches on and we all find ourselves immersed in our lives or raising our families and forming their futures so that eventually, they may host the event that creates the memories. I read that back and hope it makes sense.

I often find myself, especially around this time of year longing for the casual comfort of family and extended family. My siblings, as some of you are, separated by miles, states, and immediate family needs. I find myself embracing them and wishing for more time with them.

On the sixth day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
Six geese a-laying,
Five golden rings,
Four calling birds,
Three French hens,
Two turtle doves,
And a partridge in a pear tree.

This was commonly referred to as the six days of creation.... Oh, yes...It was a long winter.

The first day of Twelvetide, is Christmas Day and is about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. ... The sixth day of Christmas remembers St Egwin of Worcester, who died on December 30, 717, he was known as the protector of orphans and the widowed. source

The beauty of the pointsettia is forevere engraved on the blockchain. #alwaysaflower I dedicate this post to all of you. You bring joy to my soul and spread your love across the world. For this, I thank you. And just like that, these musings are done...

All I have are my words, armed in my mind, written in pen, stand by stand. Oh, yes. Still by hand. It has a different feel. Altered not by keys, backspace, and delete, I write, erase, tear it to pieces and start all over again. And again.

It’s my way. I walk out to the deep end of the page and dive right in.

Everybody I am related to has been invited to a can-painting party,at some time during this visit.

Can-painting party? I have not heard about such a thing so far, but it sounds like a fun and interesting activity. With some sense of humor, the group can make a few funny paints. For example the faces on the first photo.

I went to my mailbox and there was a Christmas card with a beautiful message inside.

This is the real tradition. But honestly. Nowadays I cannot mention anyone, who would send physical Christmas cards. Everyone is using Facebook Messenger.

Happy New Year.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

Well, yes you can!! I send lots of Christmas cards. Every year. I love doing it and it makes me feel so much more connected than a text or a message. No offense, it is the way of the world, but, most people that I send them too, genuinely love them. My kids send some too. They don't care if they are out of step, they still love to.

The cans are hilariously funny. The ones you see are the product of a painting party that was once upon a time. It is a fun tradition.

Happy New Year! May it be even better than last year!

Those nutcracker cans are amazing. That would be a fun activity to do with friends and family. I think that would be even better than just painting them yourself and giving them away. It's like a quality time activity and who doesn't love crafting? Lol

Well, crafting isn't really something I do well, but, these are fun. And people seem to have fun doing them and they get to bring them home and make their own. Which some do.

Better watch out! I will make the two of you come and make cans! :) I'll show you how much I love crafting. :))

Hello, How have you been @dswigle I believe Christmas was great over there. I didn't receive any Christmas gift from you, smile. I haven't seen or received Christmas cards for years but I love the way I read your contents about Christmas cards and cans, it makes me want to know more about it.
Thanks for sharing your celebration with us and have a wonderful day

I don't believe I had you on my Christmas list! Of course, I'll do a recheck. :)

I still love to send out and receive Christmas cards. I have spent most of my adult life (so far) traveling the world and meeting different people, and these I get cards and updates from several times a year. I love it and know the effort it takes, so I love it even more.

The cans, I make to put candy in and a reminder of their time at my house.

At least in my family it is like that, every year or most of them, the reunions rotate in different houses, the people are the same and the only thing that changes is the atmosphere and the hosts! In spite of everything it is wonderful. The nutcracker cans are very artistic, anyone can customize it to your liking and put the colors you want! I would love to try it sometime.

You should! It is really fun and they are always unique, which makes it even more fun. I like rotating like that, it makes everyone feel special hosting. Plus, it is a fair way to do it.

Thanks for stopping by!

They are! I would love to see you do some! I can imagine doing them all year and then giving them out at Christmastime!

I also decorate the house with them. :) And the tree! Hi there! Thanks for stopping by!

I think they would be cute as a flower pot or cacti container as well. Using old stuff and making it new by putting art on it is a fabulous idea .

Have a gorgeous New Year Denise and beautiful 2022🥰🤗

My niece usually sells poinsettias for a fund raiser each year. We usually buy a couple and have her donate them to a retirement home. They are very beautiful. We are just about 95% de-Christmased as of this morning. We did leave some lighted garland on our bannister though.

That is fair. I either take it down New Years Day after or after Three Kings Day. Nobody wants to take it down so soon, so I may wait.

I am with you though. I love Christmas, but, with work and everything else going on, it only makes sense.

I think if we had more space in our house it might be different. Even thought it is only a pencil tree, it still opens the room up once it is down.

Absolutely! On the other hand, when I take it down, the two staircases look empty for months as does the rest of the house.

I think it looks barren!!!

I love those nutcracker cans such a cool project

Talking to some friends and family over Christmas I think most people got behind on sending Christmas cards this year including us

I have no idea why! I held off because it was too early and then, suddenly, it wasn't. :(

Next year. November they will be written and ready.

:) Probably not, but, it sounded good.

Just anecdotally speaking, it seems there was somewhat less in the Christmas spirit overall this year. From driving around, the houses with lights up here was markedly down. I fear it to be the pandemic has notched yet another win. Lets hope the new year brings us better...

Some of my fondest memories of my Mom are both of us standings in a Hallmark store... reading cards. Laughing out loud... sometimes quiet. Other times smiling, and yes, sometimes crying.

She lives in Indiana, and hasn't visited since her brother passed in 2017. A lot because of her Multiple Sclerosis, and some because of finances and the virus.

My rambling is because your post struck a memory nerve... in a good way. I was raised by women. With love, manners, respect... you know, all those ancient and forgotten things 😆

But tradition... that was in there too, and I wanted you to know how wonderful I thought this post was. So... thank you!

We did take our Christmas down two days go-to was Christmas at grandma's so we helped her take it down. When we get home, my pretty tree will he waiting for me to take it down. Time to start anew.

The cans are freehanded, but, we make them as an organized fun thing. I have everyone make one and put little canidies for them to take home. I do Christmas cards because the job travels and so have lived in many, many places in the world and still keep up with the people.

Yes! Mine comes down Saturday. Everyone is off work then! :)
