We've all had abdominal pain at some point in our lives. Some resolve on their own within hours without the need for medicine, while others resolve after taking medication.

Peptic ulcer disease is one of the most prevalent cause of acute severe abdominal pain that brings us to the hospital. Although some people experience severe pain when they eat (gastric/stomach ulcer), others experience pain when they are hungry, which is relieved by eating (duodenal ulcer).
The pain can be relieved by drinking milk, eating, and rest.

An ulcer (wound/injury) in the lining (inner part) of the stomach or the duodenum is referred to as peptic ulcer disease (first part of the small intestine).

When gastric juice (acid) comes into contact with the wounded part (ulcerated part) of the stomach or duodenum, it creates abdominal discomfort, which we usually characterize as a burning or stabbing pain around the chest region.

Peptic ulcer disease is caused by a bacterial organism known as Helicobacter Pyroli (this organism is very stubborn and requires aggressive and consistent medication to eradicate) which accounts for a large number of cases, some people inherit it from their parents, prolonged fasting can predispose to P.U.D, unhealthy diets such as spicy food, coffee, and excessive alcohol intake can all contribute to P.U.D.

Because of pain, some complain of early satiety, trouble swallowing, weakness, easy fatiguability, and blood in the stool. People with peptic ulcers frequently complain of weight loss and anorexia (bad eating habits).

Medical and surgical treatment options for peptic ulcers are available, depending on the kind and stage of the ulcer.

Before starting treatment, various tests will be performed, such as an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy to visualize and biopsy the ulcer for histology, as well as visualizing the ulcer site, Barrium swallow, abdominal CT/MRI, complete blood count, stool microscopy.

If your ulcer is minor, your doctor will most likely recommend medication. Gastrointestinal perforation as a result of the ulcer is a medical emergency that necessitates surgery and constant monitoring in severe situations.

That's all for now; come back next time to learn about different causes of stomach pain.
