Just Before The Harmattan Haze Sets In
We are currently in a period of changing seasons all over the world.
In the temperate regions, we have snowing together with the extremes of the cold and blizzards. In the tropical regions we have the dry, dusty and harsh harmattan.
One attendant feature of the harmattan season is hazy skies. The heavenly bodies become less visible.
But just before that happens, I got to take the snapshots of the full moon across a mildly hazy sky, with a few clouds moving around.
I had always wanted to get tele zoom lens for my micro four thirds Panasonic Lumix GH4 but haven't been able to get it because of the high cost (at least an equivalent 200-600mm or 200-800mm lens).
But there is this digital zoom feature on my camera that enables me to get an equivalent 400mm reach with my 35mm-100mm lens at full zoom, even though with some crushed details because of the digital zoom.
I had never used it before, so I decided to try it here and see the results I would get from it.
People used to say the real 800mm equivalent lens could see the craters on the moon.
Even though I could not get super detailed photos, I could get some decent details pushing my canera through this extreme.
Here were the results.
F7.1, ISO 1250mm, 100mm with equivalent. 200mm and 2-4x digital zoom
F5.6, ISO 1000mm, 100mm with equivalent. 200mm and 2-4x digital zoom
F5.6, ISO 320mm, 100mm with equivalent. 200mm and 2-4x digital zoom
What do you think?
At the end, I somewhat felt even the initial pictures without the edits looked better because of less oversharpening.
The picture felt like one of those gimmicky pictures taken with the 100x zoom on some smartphones.
I guess it basically just ended as a trial at pushing the camera to the extremes, not necessarily taking super fantastic shots.
Now I know it's super necessary for me to get a dedicated long range zoom lens.

Wow really impresive photos of the moon! is not easy to capture the moon in photography
Oh thank you so much! Yes it can be uneasy, especially when you don't have the proper gear.
