2/ The incident occurred during the escalating faction feud within ruling left-wing MAS party, with Morales supporters accusing president Luis Arce and military in taking part on recent attempt on Morales' life.

Morales, ousted and exiled in 2019 following protests over alleged vote fraud, returned to the country in 2020 when MAS candidate Arce won election, defeating pro tem right-wing president Jeanine Saez.

3/ In June 2024 Arce thwated miltary coup attempt led by General Juan José Zúñiga, commander of Bolivian Army, whose men unsuccessfully tried to take over presidential palace before backing down and Zúñiga himself being arrested.

Zúñiga later claimed that the coup attempt was actually orchestrated by Arce in order to boost his popularity before 2025 elections.

Morales, on the other hand, hinted that he might run at elections against his former party comrade.
