New Year New Resolution day 2 : A Year of Patterns
Hare, Crow, and Toad
Well, here we are day 2 of the new year and having started day one with thoughts of the garden, it seems fitting that day two should be focused on my Art.
This pattern here is not new, but the coloring is and the motivation behind it is also new for 2023. I've decided that this year, in the studio and in my art, I'm going to be focusing on Patterns.
Quail & Honeysuckle
Another pattern sketched and played with last year, this quail and honeysuckle. I've endless notebooks, margins of books, and files on my computer of patterns. Lines drawn and curlicues intermingled with flowers, plants and of course Animals.
It is this year that I am going to be donning the mantle of Pattern designer to it's fullest.
Retrievers playing ball pattern Sketch
Though, I shall still be doing my individual series pieces, such as my "Animals and Plants", I'm really feeling the pull towards patterns.
Having had time this Summer with a break from social media and videos, I began to realize how much making patterns for things as wallpaper, fabric, clothing, wrapping paper... my life is really important to me.
Having had to deal with my Mother in Laws illness and with her being so close to death a few times, the escape to both the Plant world and to simply sketching and doodling patterns made me realize this duality of Garden and Design are my "safe space", my Escape.
I hope you'll enjoy coming along with me for this journey this year, 2023, and I look forward to see where it takes us. I'd love, by this Christmas, to have proudly piled up stacks and heaps of wallpapers and clothing with my designs.
To have fabrics on pillows and slip covers and the like and to have filled my new garden beds with plants grown from seed started now and shrubs and trees I hope to meet this coming Spring!
I think it's a happy sort of Resolution for the New Year.
Do any of you make resolutions specifically concerning your art/craft/hobby/passon?
Do you find them a help or hindrance?
I hope all of you find a moment of joy in your day and to take the time, however small, to indulge in your own passions.
There is a wonderful feeling of Alfonso Muncha about them.
I have not set myself any resolutions for this year as I really have to see what happens. One thing I would like to do is get my own garden under control and start a vegetable patch.
In my art, I would like to create more opportunities for myself here in Ireland as foreign travel is not going to be a thing for me.
Wishing you the best for this year and can't wait till the Spring has sprung.
I LOVE Mucnha! so very flattered by the comparison @ammonite and I adore william morris as well, so I know he'll be at my shoulder when I'm at my drawing table this year!
I feel you about travel...I used to go to UK every other year but since 2020 that just has not been on my list...I hope I can return one day, but now I'm more and more a "home body".
These seem good art goals, good luck and Happy new Year!
I didn't really make any resolutions this year, just an abstract idea to be more productive like I do every year haha, happy new year!
Hello! Hello! I have missed you! Dealing with moms is always time-consuming, but, more than that, terrifying at the same time. I am glad you have a place you have a safe place.
I am loving your Resolution, although I don't make one of my own. I resolve to do better, but not a resolution maker. I do like the thoughts of patterns. My daughter freehands hers. I am sadly one of those that use others... :)
Happy New Year, Donna!
I've missed all of you as well, being absent from here and youtube, really felt I was missing community. Happy to be back, new year, new hopes and yes the battle with her health was a long one, but with a happy ending.
Happy New Year @dswigle
