A sketch and study in ink, watercolor, and digital "The Silent Witch"
Sybil could feel the world far greater than she could see it
Her quiet life in the little cottage was serene. The cobbled mantlepiece held a warm fire and dainty but chipped china accompanied her silent afternoons with only her little familiar's twitters to break the quiet.
Athena was a diminutive familiar but held vast secrets in her little beak
Sybil's magic world was vast. In it great flights could be had in moments and mountains could be flattened into rivers in the blink of an eye. The passage to this world was a satin ribbon.
Tied carefully about her corporeal vision, the ribbon opened the door to the Real World
And a touch of a hand to the velvet wall and Sybil and Athena would be off to vast worlds of intricate design.
The gaiety of bright masks and laughter of Venice or the sombre dappled leaves of the Bois in Paris; the icy blue peaks of mountains or the steamy oppresive heat of jungles were there for the pair to explore.
Sybil's power lay in her silence
The drab quiet of her seeing world was quickly replaced with the vibrancy and magic of traveling in the Mind's Eye for Sybil and Athena
If one were to come upon the little unassuming stone cottage in the wood, with it's neat little gardens and crooked little gates made of fallen tree branches, one would assume not much goes on inside. They, like many humans assumptions, would be wrong; Worlds were traversed and acres but mere footsteps to the pair who dwelt inside.
Sybil's Magic was strongest when she was blind to the ordinary
I hope you enjoyed the story of our quiet little witch and her familiar today. As usual I began with a sketch.
Then added watercolors
Life growing in the layers of color
And of course scanned to have fun with digital. Colors can be switched and toyed with. Ideas of palettes are but a click away (well a few clicks and outlines and some various keystroke magic of course)
The power of digital
I love to make studies like this, which often become stand alone pieces of art I might use On things or as prints. I had destined our lady to become a digital oil and she might still do. You may see her again in the flourishes of oil daubs and strokes of digital oil pastels, we shall see what mood hits me in the studio.
I hope you enjoyed my story and my sketches and that you can find a moment in your day to indulge in your own passions and as always remember to stay creative.
