New Warabi Mochi Café in Town! But what a……..

IMG_3008.jpeg
I’ve been looking forward to checking out this Warabimochi cafe all week. I noticed it on my recent visit to this temple last week where I saw a man sipping something starbucksy on the road near by. I asked him where he got it and he told me the cafe was right around the corner. I didn’t bother to check it out then as I was with the kiddies. So the following week it was.

Warabimochi (蕨餅, warabi-mochi) is a wagashi (Japanese confection) made from warabiko (bracken starch) and covered or dipped in kinako (sweet toasted soybean flour).Kuromitsu syrup is sometimes poured on top before serving as an added sweetener.

So to imagine what the drinks are like here, just imagine a Starbucks kinda drink but with a jelly like substance inside, kinda like tapioca.

A trend in Japan for cafes, is to use old buildings especially houses which actually adds to the appeal. This building in particular was an old business with a little interior work done. The fact that they chose a location right by a temple was a smart move as many people pass through the location all week and it’s easy to give directions to. This warabimochi cafe also goes well with the temple as they are both traditional Japanese culture.

After grabbing our drinks, my wife and I took a look in the “sipping room” ( just a word a coined). It was nice but we would rather be outside by the temple. I ordered a café latte and my wife a Mâcha. If you look closely at the picture above, you can see the Warabimochi at the lower end of the cups looking like jellyfish 🪼

So how was it?

Well the honest truth is, it was disappointing. The café latte and the matcha tasted…. Well they didn’t have much of a taste. While the presentation was great in terms of the packaging, the whip cream on top and how the syrup deliciously oozed it……. But the most important aspect was lacking. Maybe it’s because I actually like a strong coffee flavor and a rich mâcha taste. Look at the frigging straw with the tag on it looking all classy on that tasteless drink. Maybe it was the wrong time of day? Or maybe the staff on duty mixed it wrong? I’m just giving them the benefit of the doubt. Should I have told them their drinks suck and they need to get the formula right?

But, I always like to look on the bright side of things. At least I got to have a mini date with my wife and now I know this cafe isn’t worth a second visit. And of course, at least I got some content out of going to the cafe.

Until next time, stay blessed!

I would politely tell them their drink sucks so that they get the formulas right next time if I was in your shoe.

If I ever go back I'll definitely do that. Thanks for replying to the question.

Huh, soyabean flavour in coffee?! That sure sounds weird lol! The presentations do look good, but if the caffeine "kick" isn't there what's the point anyway eh!

It would definitely be amazing if the kick was there. It's like a caffeine / snack
In a cup 😂

The presentation certainly looks fantastic. But I also don't liek drinks like that, so I doubt I would have enjoyed it. I enjoy just black coffee, or just plain bitter matcha. Anything sweeter is... well, something I take a sip of but then pass to my wife to finish for me.

They have some really good Warabi drinks, but this isn't one of them. In the 7's here that have the blue mountain blend again. Really good stuff.

I’m shocked seeing Tapioca here
I though it was only we Nigerians who drink Tapioca
Wow

It seems to be a trending drinking, I don't mind it but not something you wanna have everyday.

I think turning old buildings into cafes is a brilliant idea. Nice photos.
I'm not so fond of the jelly-like things in tea or coffee, especially when using a straw to drink. I find them rather annoying. 😆
It's great to see you pop by as always:)

Yeah, there were some good posts, heh-13.jpg

(Edited)

The old building cafes are trending here. I guess it’s cost effective and goes inline with all the ESG stuff.

You know, they aren’t bad, especially one I had a few years back, it was really good and that’s what I was expecting with this… but NOPE 😆

I’ll try to pop by more often. As usually, fretful for the warm reception from the community.

The place looks amazing, the theme of the presentation of the coffee even more, I was curious about those gelatinous cubes, now it is a pity that it was not as good as it looks, it has happened to me before, I also like that the flavor of the coffee is intense and is the protagonist.

Beautiful photos! greetings! ☕️

Nice choice of words. I agree 100 percent. Now you have me thinking that people like us ( coffee lovers ) aren't the market. It's probably for people who don't really like the flavor of coffee but want the vibe.

Thank you 🙏

Sounds like the Warabimochi Café had more style than substance - a 'jellyfish' in a cup that couldn't quite swim up to the flavor expectations! But hey, at least the visit brewed up some sweet content, even if the coffee itself was more 'meh'-cha than matcha!
