Realistic digital portrait - The first attempt /
Hello everyone,
I don’t know what got into me but I’m drawing realistically all of the sudden.
I still would love to draw fan art. It is always a fun project to do. @tegoshei mention that I should do realistic anime fan art. That is interesting as well!
Anyways, @dbooster Asked me to draw his son but I’ve never done a realistic portrait of a person before. I have used my daughter as a model for my semi realistic drawing once before but I don’t know if I can do it. So, here I am, trying to figure out if I can actually draw a realistic portrait of a person.
I chose the reference photo from Pinterest this time. Pinterest has a variety of collections of interesting images. Although, using them as a reference is a bit tricky when it comes to copyright. I’ve seen in some of the tutorials I took, paid or from YouTube, the instructors use images from Pinterest but they don’t seem to credit the original owner or explain how to credit the original owner. What I figured out from reading some articles is that it stays in a grey area like creating fan art.
It is also tricky to find who actually owns these images as well. I’ll attach the link I found here in case someone is wondering. If any of you know how to use Pinterest images as a drawing reference, please let me know.
Here is the process of my struggle.
This is, so far, the scariest and the funniest sketch I’ve ever made.
If I can do the sketch better I think the process after this will be so much easier. I really struggled with the balance between the eyes, nose, mouth, jaw, ears… I can draw these parts well separately but to make my drawing really look like the person I’m drawing, I need to practice more. The drawing will look totally different if I can’t get it right.
This is the moment I really enjoy. The transformation of scary sketch to somewhat viewable, you can kind of see what I’m trying draw, eye friendly sketch haha
The lasso tool officially became my favourite tool. I usually duplicate the layer before using the lasso tool. When I finish my correction, I merge the duplicated layer to the original layer. This way you have less fixing/blending to do because moving around a part of your drawing leaves a white gap that you need to fill with the proper colour.
Drawing the curly and messy hair was not very easy. I had to erase and redraw a few times.
I moved around the facial features some more using the lasso tool and I’m calling it done because I can’t quite make it look like the reference.
I think I need to draw a few more portraits to get comfortable with this style of drawing but I really enjoyed drawing this.
I hope you like it.

This is fantastic!
You did a fantastic job. It looks exactly like the original photo. There is more of a softness that makes your picture look cuter. Very well done.
You know, I don't know if you will laugh but I see hints of Gatchaman in this face (the woman on the team, obviously). It's quite realistic, but something about the curve of the face and the intensity of the eyes makes me think of Gatchaman (I don't watch anime a lot, actually, but a neighbor loaned us his DVD set of Gatchaman and my oldest son loves it, so I see it sometimes. Even more I hear him singing だれだだれだだれだ from another room, trying to imitate Masato Shimon's deep voice).
Thank you so much!!!
Hahaha! I knew exactly which one you were talking about, right away! Omg...Gatchaman! It must be the eyes😆 I used to watch Gatchaman as a kid.
It is so awesome of your neighbour loading you up with the DVD.
I used to sing that song as well. So nice to hear your son is singing as well!
I was first wandering if it was Adobe you used for the drawing but I was calm to read through till the end and I saw the tools used, it was wow I must recommend your effort. Kudos
Thank you so much!
iPad is a pretty powerful tool for drawing. I recommend!
That's is pretty good to hear. Kudos to you
I became your fan. What a brutal style, full of realistic details. I was fascinated. Best regards!
