Two Holidays That Came with Roses and Thorns.

This edition (titled “The Best And Worst Holiday”) of the @hive-learners weekly posting topics got me nostalgic. I found myself recounting my past holidays, both the good and bad ones 🤔.

As my title states, I'll be sharing with you, two prime holidays of mine that came with roses and thorns. Basically, my best and worst holidays. So, which do you wanna hear first 😃… the good or the bad? Okay, you know what? I'll begin with the bad first so I don't have to end this post with a sad ending. Actually, I'm a fan of happy endings and I bet you are to, hehe 😁.

Enough talk now… Recounting my worst holiday, I'd say it was in summer of 2016. My siblings and I went to stay with my Uncle in the mainland part of Lagos, my state of residence. Before then, It used to be a ritual because that was our favorite way of spending the school vacation. Why? Well because it was always fun-filled!

Our Uncle was really fond of us and so were we. He took us like his own and make our stay memorable. He would even take us out for treats, buy us lots of gifts and all of that. His house was so big and beautiful too and whenever we were there, we had the freedom to watch cartoons and movies for as long as we wanted.

However, everything changed when he got married and bore a child. His wife didn't treat us like my uncle did. She was rather mean and negligent. Even my uncle kinda changed too. Fine, I understand that becoming a husband and father comes with a lot of responsibilities but they made us feel quite insignificant during our stay there.

That year we were excited to come over for the holiday because of our baby cousin, but that joy turned sour when we eventually arrived. I and my siblings became more like servants to my uncle's wife.

Even worse, my uncle went away for a business trip so he wasn't there to witness his wife's poor hospitality. She made us do too much work with aggressiveness. Plus she cared less about our wellbeing. My siblings and I no longer felt at ease again and we just couldn't wait to return home.

One time, she scolded and slapped me for accidentally breaking a plate in the kitchen (Note: This is not some Nollywood fiction 🤕). Sincerely, it was uncalled for because I apologized immediately and explained that it slipped by accident, yet she showed no mercy. I cried a lot and became homesick. At that moment, I knew we had to leave soon. Thankfully, my Mom's sister came later on and we left for home together. Since then, we haven't been there for a holiday again.

From that experience, I discovered that relationships with people won't always be the same… people grow up and our way of life changes with time. Also, I learned that it's important for one to marry a good woman that will maintain good relationships with family and not jeopardize them.

Now, unto my best vacation! 🤩

Well, that would be in December of 2014… yes that was long ago but I still can't forget it in a jiffy. My parents, siblings and I traveled down to our village for Christmas. It was literally my first time being there since I was a toddler. Everyone was so happy to see us, I felt at home and had the best time of my life.

For the first time, I got to meet my other cousins and relatives who lived in my hometown. My grandmas overfed us to the point that I added weight when I returned back home 😅. That period was just celebration upon celebration, from Christmas to my aunt's traditional marriage ceremony and many others. Honestly, if I am to go into details, this post would probably exceed a thousand words.

Through this rosy vacation, I got to experience my culture firsthand. I learned to speak my language and cook our local dishes. I even made many friends in the village who were wowed by my accent 😅. And while I was teaching them "English", they were teaching me to speak certain words in "Igbo" (my local dialect).

In conclusion, I've had many other awesome and awful holidays but these two are my most unforgettable ones to say the least.
