Living a Whole Week Without My Phone.

Literally, I used to think that I can't live a day without my mobile phone. And to a degree, it was true. I was a phone addict and it was impossible to find me without a phone in my hands. I'd owe that to the fact that most of my life was spent online.

I was mostly indoors, so the only way to kill boredom and keep up with friends was through social media chatting. Other things I did with my phone were reading ebooks, streaming songs, playing games, watching movies, surfing the internet, etc.

However, my thoughts reprogrammed when the unthinkable happened last year; my phone got spoiled without prior notice. It just fell from my hands and refused to turn on ever since. I even went from one phone technician to another but it yielded negative results. The last one I went to put a heavy price on the repair which I couldn't afford.

My parents too who couldn't immediately afford another told me to rest and forget about the phone. But they promised to get a new one when the money comes.

Honestly, I was devastated, lonely and bored throughout that period. I spent a whole month without a phone but I survived it, hehe. So, what's a week? 🙂

Even now, If I had no phone for a week, I would still survive it because I've become used to not always using my phone lately. And asides my weak battery, I also owe that to the light issues in my area of residence 😕. Matter of fact, anyone living in Nigeria should be able to attest to the unstable electricity. Severally, I've gone 2–3 days without my phone. So yeah, a week is no big deal for me.

How will I cope for a week?

Simple, I'd channel my activities from online to offline. Basically, just doing stuff that'll take my mind off my phone. Or using other alternative sources. For instance;

  • WRITING: I mostly use my mobile phone to write or blog. But if I had no phone, I'd switch to writing using a book and pen. Having no phone shouldn't stop me from writing or making blogs when there's an alternative. I would even use that period to come up with a few weeks' worth of blog topics for hive.

  • READING: I'm the type of person that's always reading something online using my phone. I love reading other people's articles, blogs and stories, learning new words and experiences. It helps to expand my own knowledge. But if my phone is gone for a week, it wouldn't stop me from reading. I would revert to other alternatives like reading newspapers, magazines, hardcopy novels and my bible, basically words written on paper. I would also have more time to study my school books.

  • MUSIC: As a music lover who takes hobby in listening to songs everyday, going a week without my phone would be tough because that's where my playlists are stored. But no worries, music isn't limited to our mobile devices. It is prevalent and you can listen to it through other mediums. One of my favorite ways to listen to music is through a radio. I have a radio at home but it's abandoned. So I'll have to fall back to it, dust it and still enjoy good music from it.

  • FACE TO FACE INTERACTION: Due to social media, I've become a little less interactive with friends and family face to face. Going a week without my phone will leave me with no other choice but to go out and have more meet ups with friends and family. It'll definitely help to strengthen bond and catch up on each other.

  • EXERCISING and RELAXING: Spending a week away from my phone's screen will give me the opportunity to enjoy more self care as well as pay more attention to my fitness and health. I'd have more time to exercise and rest.

  • RECREATION: I've always thought that my phone was my only boredom killer but I've figured that there are other fun and interesting things I could do for recreation during that period. That includes; watching movies on TV, crocheting, playing card/board games with my siblings, going for evening walks while enjoying the cool breeze, shopping etc.

In as much as I would deeply miss my phone and all the usual stuff I did with it, a week without it wouldn't go so bad. There might still be boredom but it'll give me more time to meditate and self-reflect. And since I'm not yet into any online business for now, I wouldn't really have much to lose.

This blog is in response to the @hive-learners weekly posting topics for week 24 edition 1 on the title; “A WEEK WITHOUT A COMPUTER”.

Not many people are able to stay away from their phones and computers for just an hour.
It takes a lot of discipline too.

Hehe... you seem to have a plan in place in case something like this does happen. That's great, means you'll never be caught unprepared and however it comes to you, that's how you'll give it.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
