THE EXTRAORDINARY FEMALE NIGERIAN LEGEND... A woman who broke through the glass ceilings.
Have you ever imagined a world without women🤔?
According to Tanya Shree "A world without women is like a life without care, love, respect, importance, understanding, responsibility, and aim. Because these things we first learn from our mother, and she is a woman". And I cannot agree less: without women, there will be no life and no drama (women are naturally dramatic🤭😁).
What would men be without women? Have you thought about a home without the presence of a woman? Women are like the sun, which lights up the world. Women play a significant role in making the world fun and colorful, and women are known to be a source of blessings to all those around them.
Looking back at history, the world has a history of keeping women in the shadows with policies put in place to frustrate them. Women were hardly visible in most traditional societies; they were seen as people who did not belong to the corporate world and were hence restricted to being housekeepers doing domestic chores and subsistence farming.
But as time went by, women were able to break this barrier by making significant contributions to every discipline and other areas of life. They went beyond maintaining the home front (doing domestic chores, farming, trading, and maintaining a domestic economy) to contributing to nation-building.
In Nigeria, there are so many women who have been strong and ingenious. Despite all the backward policies on education and some archaic societal and religious ideologies used to frustrate women aspiring to higher positions in the nation, they were able to work within the constraints, making so much impact not just within but on a global scale.
There are a lot of famous women in Nigerian history that I admire, such as Professor Dora Nkem Akunyili, Chimamanda Adichie, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Agbani Darego, Chief Folake Solanke (SAN), Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti and Sandra Aguebor-Ekperuoh to mention but a few. These women made positive change, and their legacies will forever outlive them.
My love for the late Professor Dora Nkem Akunyili is unmatched; she was one of my role models while growing up, a woman who broke through glass ceilings during her time on earth. She was a renowned pharmacologist, a woman with a clear vision. She was appointed the Director General (DG) of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
During her tenure as the DG of NAFDAC, she led a war against fake drugs and their producers after losing her sister to a fake insulin injection. She created awareness about the dangers of substandard drugs, published lists of counterfeit products, and had routine surveillance for drugs coming into the country and those manufactured in the country so as to save other potential victims.
As a result of her fight against fake drugs, she faced criticism, physical attacks, and several attempts of assassination, but that did not stop her from fighting. She was a woman of great integrity, an honest and exemplary public servant who had the interests of the masses at heart.
Dora Akunyili has gained recognition and won awards in public health, pharmacology, and human rights both locally and internationally as a result of her commitment to transparency and selfless service. She is a heroine who has paved the way for generations of women to chase their dreams and fight for what they believe in.
