Balinese orange is a type of fruit that is quite popular in Asian countries like Indonesia. This orange is unique in that its size is very large, different from other types of oranges in general.

Market demand for pomelo continues to increase, so many entrepreneurs are interested in growing this plant. Before learning how to plant pomelo, know what characteristics, growing requirements, and cultivation techniques you need to understand.

The pomelo plant has a type of tap root. In fertile soil conditions, pomelo roots can grow up to 4 meters into the ground.

As the roots grow stronger, the shape of the tree trunk gets bigger. In general, the stems are round in size with a slightly rough texture and are slightly prickly.

This stem will grow up to 4.5 meters with a brown and greenish appearance. Meanwhile, the leaves can grow to around 5-15 cm, which are oval in shape and have pinnate bones/

Before the tree bears fruit, the pomelo plant will have white flowers and appear on young twigs. Fertilizing grapefruit will produce fruit with a red flesh texture.

Unlike oranges in general which are yellow or orange, grapefruit has a green surface with a very thick layer of skin. The seeds of the fruit also have a round shape and have a few pointed parts which are polyembryonic.

To plant this pomelo, Dulur needs to know what the growing conditions for this plant are. Some things you should pay attention to are as follows:

Climate

In terms of weather and climate, pomelo trees can grow well in areas with temperatures of around 25 – 30 degrees Celsius. It's no wonder why this fruit can grow in tropical areas such as Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Apart from that, grapefruit also needs lots of sunlight so that fruit production is optimal. So, this plant is more suitable to grow in spacious land and is not covered by dense trees around it.

Land

Regarding soil type, grapefruit really likes loose, porous and fertile soil. Therefore, make sure you plant it no more than 1.5 meters so that it can grow well during the dry season.

Likewise, the depth of groundwater should not be less than 0.5 meters so that trees are not easily attacked by disease. Meanwhile, the ideal soil size for planting pomelo is at a pH of 5-6.

How to plant pomelo, make sure you follow the cultivation techniques below so that the fruit can grow optimally. Here are some steps you must take before the land preparation period.

Plant Propagation

Plant propagation can generally be done vegetatively using several parts of the plant such as stems, branches, roots, twigs, and others. The purpose of this plant propagation is to produce new plants that are similar to the parent.

Of course, you have to do vegetative propagation of plants with human help, which can be done by cutting, grafting or bending. However, if you want to combine it with natural vegetation, Dulur can use the grafting method .

After carrying out plant propagation, don't forget to also prepare the land according to the conditions for growing pomelo trees. Make sure the location of the land you choose is suitable, starting from the temperature, altitude, and type of soil used.

Also pay attention to the planting medium that you will use before planting pomelo on local land. This preparation also includes providing probiotics to prevent pest attacks so that plants can grow quickly.

How to Plant Pomelo

After determining the right land location, you can plant Balinese trees in drained soil. Make room at the end by digging a hole that is wide enough to accommodate the root structure of the tree.

Then, place the tree in the hole and fill it with planting medium about half of the soil. In this process, don't forget to spread organic fertilizer around the tree trunk.

Spread organic fertilizer around 2 inches thick to help maintain moisture in the tree. Another benefit of spreading this fertilizer is that it prevents weeds from growing and maintains healthy roots so they don't rot.

After you have finished planting the Balikerang, carry out maintenance so that the tree can produce a quality harvest. The stages in maintaining this plant include:

Irrigation

During the care process, it is recommended to water the plant once every day to keep the tree hydrated. Even though pomelo is quite resistant to drought, it is important to carry out this maintenance so that the tree can produce fruit quickly in a short time.

Pruning

Whatever type of plant needs to be maintained by regularly pruning dry parts of the tree. You can cut dead parts such as leaves, twigs or stems to keep the tree looking beautiful.

Pest and Disease Control

The next step is to control pests and diseases which you can do by spraying insecticides. This method is very effective in eradicating trees so that they are not easily attacked by disease, thereby minimizing the risk of crop failure.

Fertilization

A maintenance step that is no less important is regularly providing GDM Fruit Plant Specialist Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC) which is good for the growth of pomelo.
