It is the start of a new year and one way to have a year filled with love and devoid of hate is to stay away from any form of bitterness. Bitterness can be in different form and shapes. They are mostly caused by excessive anger, holding on for too long to unpleasant situations and experiences, prolonged grudge towards yourself or others. Bitterness can put our life in a very unpleasant state where joy and happiness will seem so distant.

It is almost impossible for us to shut ourselves away from the bad experiences that we have gone through or not to be faced with hurtful comments or criticism from people. However, we can avoid letting the pain that comes from these events grow into something that we have to deal with forever in the form of extreme bitterness. The best thing anyone who want to live a happy life can do is to allow those painful feelings to slide by forgiving themselves or others, thereby healing totally from the sting of the hurtful experiences.

We have at one time or the other tasted a bitter drink or food and we can testify to how unpleasant it is in the mouth. In fact some people can't go ahead to swallow it once they taste the bitterness in their mouth. This is the same way we should treat bitterness in our hearts. We should not harbor them because they are not going to add any value to us. (Well, most bitter drinks and foods are said to be healthy, anyway). The way a person who has a bitter heart will talk and act will be characterized with so much negativity that they will always feel stressed and sad. Is this the kind of life you want for yourself?

In all truth there is nothing good that comes from harboring bitterness in your mind. You will always be looking forward to hurting yourself and people around you, which sometimes may be intentional and other times, unintentional. Your words, actions, and thoughts will always be targeted at making people around you feel the way you are feeling inside of you. From this moment make a decision to let go of every pain and anger that is stealing your joy and happiness which makes you look unfriendly, lonely and filled with negative intentions towards yourself and others.

Well, you may not be able to take the bold steps if you don't learn how to let go of grudges. If you master the act of letting go of grudges and forgiving people when they hurt you, your life will be free from bitterness. Also, when people treat you badly and hurt your feelings don't keep mute and let the hurt break you down. You must be able to speak up and express your dissatisfaction. Oftentimes, people don't know the extent to which their words hurt others and they may be so kind to apologize when bring it to their notice
