Four Ways to Waste Time

We all do it. We all waste time whether we want to or not. Here are the Four biggest ways that all of us waste time.

Four Ways To Waste Time.png

Procrastination

Procrastination is one of the largest ways that we waste time. Putting it off till "Tomorrow" is what we all do. However "Tomorrow" never gets here.

Before postponing till "Tomorrow" take a minute or two to determine what steps it would take to complete the item that you are putting off. It may be that you can complete a few of the steps now. If not, make a point to pick a time and schedule it into your next day so that you have an exact time that you will "Get It Done".

"Sometime" I'll Do It

This is very similar to procrastination however it comes with a promise that you make to yourself that you will complete it which we will never get around to. It just wastes time and mental energy to keep bringing up the same item over and over again.

If you find yourself making a "Sometime" promise to yourself, make yourself answer the question "When?" It could be "Now" or "Never" but it should stop being "Sometime"

The Habit of Excusing our Inaction

We spend way to much time explaining why we never get around to doing what we say we will do. The more time we waste explaining why we are not productive is time we could have been using to complete those same items.

Instead, get in the Habit of taking action on the items you think you need to explain to others why you did not get them done. No one needs to hear why you did not get things done. You should be sharing your accomplishments instead.

Regretting Things you did not complete

There are times when you look back and think about all the things you did not get done. Basically regretting the inaction. By pondering on these things, you are actually wasting time that could be used more productively completing things.

Yes, do review your day of what you accomplished and did not accomplished but do not waste the time regretting what you did not complete. The day is finished. Spend your time planning for the future instead of regretting the past.

Hopefully you can take these four ways to waste time and move forward with the time you saved by not wasting as much of your time in the future. Take care.

This is so true, I have found myself in all of these situations. so now instead of trying to explain why I didn't do something I just say, 'No I'm not doing that'. If I feel like I'm regretting not doing something and it can still be completed then I complete it and if it can't be done because maybe I missed the deadline or something I just say to myself, 'you sisn't do that when you should have so just move on, maybe next time'.

You can't dwell on what you let pass you by. Either do it or not cause as you've said you just be wasting time that could be spent elsewhere.

I am glad you found the post thoughtful. I wrote it to remind myself about all the ways I had been wasting time.

Great reply. Taking control and not excusing things. It sounds like Don't sweat the small stuff and it's all small stuff. Worry about things you can affect and let other things take care of themselves. !PIZZA

Yes, Yes. Taking control is also taking responsibility for what you do and what you don't. You can't dwell on things past, for time waits for no one.

Yes, just think of all the things that would be accomplished if everyone had better time management skills.

Nice sharing. Sometimes I do feel it's ok to indulge once in a while, perhaps to chill at a cafe on a weekend and "waste" the afternoon. Helps me to clear my mind and recharge for the week ahead. Hehe!

I as well but I think that is fine because it makes us more productive later

It's indeed like you said... We all do it.
The main thing is to try to do it as rarely as possible... As one of the commenters said, time management can help... Also, I'm using a daily TODO list and don't go to bed until I check them all... But, that can fail too :)

I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project and it will be highlighted in the next post!

We all fall into these traps at times. It's really coming down to our own insecurities and or egos. The more you break those down, the more you can focus and make better use of your time. Of course this is a journey that I travel every single day, lol.

So true and we all are at different stages of dealing with each of these. I improve in one area then must focus on another that I neglected. Take care.
