Succession the controversial series of “No real person involved” | Spoiler-free review [ENG/SPA]

What's up cinephiles I hope you all had a happy vacations and the opportunity to watch many series and movies, wishing you that this new year you have the opportunity to crystallize many of your goals, and that you are able to enjoy much more of cinema and television. Personally I have finished the year and I have started this new 2022 watching some series and movies still take advantage of the vacations, and my first review for the community will be of the series in which I focused more and dedicated more time.

Que tal cinéfilos espero que todos hayan tenido unas felices vacaciones y la oportunidad de ver muchas series y películas, deseándoles que este nuevo año tengan la oportunidad de cristalizar muchas de sus metas, y que sean capaces de disfrutar mucho más del cine y la televisión. Personalmente he finalizado el año y he iniciado este nuevo 2022 viendo algunas series y películas aprovechan aun las vacaciones, y mi primera reseña para la comunidad será de la serie en la que me enfocado más y dedicado más tiempo.

It is Succession an HBO original series of 29 episodes that had its first season in 2018 with 10 episodes, continued with its second season in 2019 with 10 more episodes, but we had to wait 2 years until 2021 to have a third season of 9 episodes, the cause of this delay was due to the pandemic with the fateful 2020 that turned out to be a year of many cinematic delays, humanity was learning to live with this disease and the adjustments to be able to produce new material in film and television caused this delay.

Se trata de Succession una serie original de HBO de 29 episodios que tuvo su primera temporada en el 2018 con 10 episodios, continuo con su segunda temporada en 2019 con 10 episodios más, pero tuvimos que esperar 2 años hasta el 2021 para tener una tercera temporada de 9 episodios, la causa de esta demora se debió a la pandemia con el fatídico 2020 que resulto ser un año de muchas demoras cinematográficas, la humanidad aprendía a vivir con esta enfermedad y los ajustes para poder producir nuevo material en cine y televisión causaron esta demora.

I personally believe that new and quality content in these times is scarce, and I don't think it's because of a lack of ideas, it's that time and means were not abundant, which caused the end of 2020 and all of 2021 in a rushed manner to develop the content that the audience felt was pending. Succession is part of that content that was due, and I think what has been achieved is good enough to be called one of the best series of 2021.

Personalmente creo que el contenido nuevo y de calidad en estos tiempos es escaso, y no creo que sea por la falta de ideas, es que el tiempo y los medios no abundaron, lo que provocó que finales del 2020 y todo el 2021 de manera apresuradas se desarrollara el contenido que la audiencia sentía que estaba pendiente. Succession es parte de ese contenido que estaba en deuda, y creo que lo que se ha logrado es lo suficientemente bueno para ser llamado una de las mejores series del 2021.

Succession is a drama, with some touches of comedy, which many say is based on realities of the business and media world, whose central axis is the power struggle between the members of a family, where each of them strives to be the successor of a father who has achieved everything to create a business empire of media and entertainment.

My first impressions about the series were varied, one of my first reactions was to investigate if it was based on real facts, and I found several speculations that it is based on the life of Rupert Murdoch, media billionaire who serves as CEO of News Corp, parent of the Wall Street Journal, and other American media such as the Sun, even in other borders such as the Times of London and the Australian. Incidentally, he is the one who pulls the strings at the famous Fox Corporation media network.

This information helped many to turn their attention to the series, eager to see what life is like in the upper echelons of American society, showing various movements and struggles for power and status in an unscrupulous manner, regardless of the consequences for the masses, which is described as "it's all part of the game", which at first may cause you feelings of indignation and contempt, even when talking about common people as "No real people involved" to refer to unfortunate events where people have been victims of vile actions as a result of their actions and decisions.

Mis primeras impresiones sobre la serie fueran variadas, una mis primeras reacciones fue investigar si estaba basada en hechos reales, y encontré diversas especulaciones de que se basa en la vida de Rupert Murdoch, multimillonario de los medios que funge como CEO de News Corp, matriz del Wall Street Journal, y de otros medios norteamericanos como el Sun, incluso en otras fronteras como el Times de Londres y el Australian. De paso es quien mueve los hilos en la famosa cadena de medio Fox Corporation.
Esta información ayudo a que muchos dirigieran la atención hacia la serie, deseosos de ver cómo es la vida de la alta cúpula de la sociedad norteamericana, mostrando diversos movimientos y luchas de poder y de estatus de manera inescrupulosa, sin importar las consecuencias para las masas, a lo que se describe como “todo es parte del juego”, lo que en un principio puede causarte sentimientos de indignación y desprecio, incluso cuando se habla de personas comunes como “Sin personas reales involucradas” para referirse a hechos lamentables donde personas han sido victimas de acciones viles producto de sus actos y decisiones.

Story

The series chronicles the life of the Roy family, owners of an entertainment and television media conglomerate called Waystar Royco whose headquarters are in New York City: it begins with the actions of Logan Roy father of the family who built the entire empire, and now at 80 years old it seems that it is time to step aside and leave a successor, at first everything points to be his son Kendall Roy, who is shown as the director of the company and seems to be in control of everything.

La serie relata la vida de la familia Roy, dueños de un conglomerado de medios de entretenimiento y televisión llamado Waystar Royco cuya sede principal está en la ciudad de Nueva York: incia con las acciones de Logan Roy padre de la familia quien construyo todo el imperio, y ya a sus 80 años parece que es el tiempo de hacerse a un lado y dejar un sucesor, al principio todo apunta a que será su hijo Kendall Roy, quien se nos muestra como el director de la compañía y parece tener en control de todo.

But things take an unexpected turn, and the entire first season is spent between surprising and deceitful actions between Logan and his son that prove to have control of the company. As the episodes go by, other actors join the power dispute, among them Logan's other children, his only daughter Shiv Roy and his youngest son Roman Roy, both also eager to take control of their father's empire.

Pero las cosas dan un vuelco inesperado, y toda la primera temporada transcurre entre acciones sorpresivas y engañosas entre logan y su hijo que demuestran para tener el control de la compañía. Con el transcurrir de los episodios otros actores se suman a la disputa de poder, entre ellos los demás hijos de logan, su única hija Shiv Roy y su hijo menor Román Roy, ambos también deseosos de hacerse con el control del imperio de su padre.

I confess that the first season was a bit boring, I even felt contempt for the characters in the first episodes, but then I took more interest because I realized that the performances certainly achieved their purpose, and left in me the desire to know the outcome, so I continued with the second season, and I must say that this is where it gets good, unexpected things happened that cause impression.

Confieso que la primera temporada me resultó algo aburrida, incluso llegue a sentir desprecio por los personajes en los primeros episodios, pero luego le tome más interés porque me di cuenta que las actuaciones ciertamente lograban su cometido, y dejo en mi el deseo de conocer el desenlace, por eso continúe con la segunda temporada, y debo decir que es allí donde se pone buena la cosa, ocurrieron cosas inesperadas que causan impresión.

Characters

There are many characters involved in the series, but as usual in my publications, I only mention my favorites, or those who I think play a great role. It may seem strange but my favorites are undoubtedly only two characters: Tom Wambsgans starring Matthew Macfadyen, who represents the husband Shiv Roy, a potential heiress and successor of the empire created by Logan Roy. Tom at first glance looks like the careerist and opportunistic husband who always seeks his personal benefit, an eccentric and peculiar man who brings a touch of humor, but what I like most about the character is to see Macfadyen play someone so extroverted after seeing him hundreds of times in his role in Pride and Prejudice so serious and unemotional.

Son muchos los personajes involucrados en la serie, pero como acostumbro en mis publicaciones, solo hago mención de mis favoritos, o de quienes creo que hacen un gran papel. Parecerá extraño pero mis favoritos sin duda son solo dos personajes: Tom Wambsgans protagonizados por Matthew Macfadyen, quien representa al esposo Shiv Roy una potencial heredera y sucesora del impero creado por Logan Roy. Tom a primera vista se ve como el marido arribista y oportunista que siempre busca su beneficio personal, un hombre excéntrico y peculiar que aporta el toque de humor, pero lo que mas me gusta del personaje es ver a Macfadyen interpretar alguien tan extrovertido luego de verlo cientos de veces en su papel en Orgullo y Prejuicio tan serio y poco emotivo.

Tom has a very peculiar dynamic with a young family member known as Greg "the egg" Hirsch played by Nicholas Braun, who comes into the Roy's life as a cousin who wants the family help and gradually becomes more involved in family affairs until he reaches the central circle where he is part of the "game". Greg is a character apparently without malice, and without any work experience, but thanks to the relationship he has with Tom, he holds important jobs in several of the Roy's companies, which seems to me a perfect criticism of corporate promotions that seem unjustified. Greg never knows what game he is playing, he seems to be on all sides and gives surprises on many occasions with his actions.

Tom tiene una dinámica muy peculiar con un joven miembro de la familia conocido como Greg “el huevo” Hirsch interpretado por Nicholas Braun, quien llega a la vida de los Roy como primo que desea la ayuda familiar y que poco a poco se involucra mas en los asuntos familiares hasta alcanzar el circulo central donde se es parte del “juego”. Greg es un personaje aparentemente sin malicia, y sin nada de experiencia laboral, pero gracias a la relación que tiene con Tom, desempeña puestos de trabajo importante en varias de las empresas de los Roy, lo que me parece una perfecta critica a los ascensos empresariales que nos parecen injustificados. Greg nunca se sabe a que juego, parece estar en todos los bandos y da sorpresas en muchas ocasiones con sus acciones.

Conclusión

I confess that the series does not hook you at first, it is somewhat weak and unexciting after several episodes, you have to give it a chance even well into the second season, but with the moments of crazy humor of certain characters, makes the wait for the crucial thing worth it. Also the criticisms in the development of the plot are quite good, as the economic system of the United States is in the hands of a few, the political power that have large financial capital, and how the visceral decisions of some affect the lives of the masses are present in this series.

Confieso que la serie no te engancha en un principio, se muestra algo débil y poco emocionante transcurridos varios episodios, hay que darle oportunidad incluso hasta bien entrada la segunda temporada, pero con lo momentos de humor loco de ciertos personajes, hace que la espera para lo crucial valga la pena. También las criticas en el desarrollo de la trama son bastante buenas, como el sistema económico de los Estados Unidos está en manos de unos pocos, el poder político que tienen los grandes capitales financieros, y como las decisiones viscerales de algunos afectan las vidas de las masas están presentes en esta serie.

At times you are surprised by the opulence and life of luxury with which these people live, it seems that they have no limits and can do whatever they please, they do not settle for crumbs, they always go for the maximum. One of the most striking phrases is how they identify the people they consider inferior: "No real people involved", who are also often described as peons or plebs. This series perfectly shows something I have always believed, these people are so but so rich, that all they have is money, because their hearts are rotten, and if a series can make you feel these things, it is worth watching.

Por momentos te sorprendes con la opulencia y vida de lujos con que estas personas viven, parece que no tienen limites y pueden hacer cuanto les place, no se conforman con migajas, siempre van por lo máximo. Una de las frases que causa mayor impacto es como identifican a las personas que ellos consideran inferiores: “Sin personas reales involucradas”, a quienes también describen muchas veces como peones o la plebe. Esta serie muestra perfectamente algo que siempre he creído, estas personas son tan pero tan ricas, que lo único que tienen es dinero, porque sus corazones están podridos, y su una serie puede hacerte sentir estas cosas, vale la pena verla.
