Maintenance scheduling to extend the life of your vehicle [ENG/SPA]

For some time I have been thinking about how to extend the life of my vehicle, in 2021 I had to make several repairs, fortunately minor, but they were consecutive and required time and resources. At times I wanted to sell it and replace it, it is from 2013 but frankly I do not think I can replace it with a newer one in a long time, so I concluded that it is important that I can give it the maximum care and extend its life by scheduling maintenance.

Que tal amigos, hace tiempo llevo pensando en cómo extender la vida de mi vehículo, el años 2021 tuve a realizar varias reparaciones, por fortuna menores, pero que fueron consecutivas y requirieron tiempo y recursos. Por momentos quise venderlo y reemplazarlo, es del año 2013 pero francamente no creo poder reemplazarlo por uno más nuevo en mucho tiempo, por eso concluí que es importante que pueda darle el máximo cuidado y extender más su vida útil programando un mantenimiento.

As I am sure many of you know, manufacturers usually assemble or create their products with a time of obsolescence, it is known as programmed obsolescence, which is nothing more than establishing a short useful life for the product to be repurchased, and I am not saying that this applies to the entire vehicle, but for many of its parts, which we must replace every so often, but with proper maintenance we can extend its useful life.

That is why I started to investigate what I can do to take better care of the vehicle, because many of us over time have learned how to take care of them and maintain them, but there are certain aspects that can escape us, but there are certain maintenance that we can perform and get the best performance when we stick to pre-established plans and methods, so today I want to share with you some that I have learned to give formal character to what I know.

General maintenance considerations

Use of manuals: One of the details that we tend to overlook when it comes to how to apply the maintenance of our vehicle is the use of certified manuals. I know that when we acquire a used car we do not have first hand access to this information, but thanks to the fact that we live in the digital era, it is possible to find almost any manual online, through forums and even the manufacturers' own websites.

Uso de los manuales: Uno de los detalles que solemos pasar por alto a la hora de como aplicar el mantenimiento de nuestro vehículo es el uso de los manuales certificados. Se que cuando adquirimos un carro usado no tenemos acceso de primera mano a esta información, pero gracias a que vivimos en la era digital, es posible encontrar casi cualquier manual en línea, a través de foros e incluso las paginas de los propios fabricantes.

Time scheduling: Another important detail about maintenance is the time of its application, since doing it periodically allows to discover in time possible breakdowns and hidden threats to avoid sudden problems and correct in time, being this the basis of any maintenance plan, because it is the custom to perform it in a corrective way instead of doing it in a preventive way.

Programación del tiempo: Otro de los detalles importantes sobre el mantenimiento es el tiempo de su aplicación, ya que hacerlo de forma periódica permite descubrir a tiempo posibles averiás y amenazas ocultas para evitar problemas repentinos y corregir a tiempo, siendo esto la base de todo plan de mantenimiento, porque es la costumbre realizarlo de manera correctiva en vez de hacerlo de manera preventiva.

Categories: Maintenance could be divided into two categories: the one that we can perform as owners of the vehicle, having a moderate knowledge of what should be done, and the maintenance that should be performed by qualified personnel. I am not going to lie, I am a promoter of "do it yourself" but we should not perform certain maintenance for which we are not qualified, so either you learn to do it properly, or you put it in the hands of experts.

Spare parts and consumables: Each manufacturer usually recommends to replace spare parts or replace consumables, from the original brand or other commercial partners, of course for obvious reasons they will recommend their brand first, but what really matters is that, when performing maintenance, we use what we can acquire of higher quality, which guarantees to overcome the planned obsolescence for a longer time.

Categorías: El mantenimiento podría dividirse en dos categorías: el que podemos ejecutar como propietarios del vehículo, teniendo un conocimiento moderado de que se debe hacer, y el mantenimiento que debe realizar un personal calificado. En esto no les voy a mentir, soy promotor de “hazlo tu mismo” pero no debemos realizar ciertos mantenimientos para los cuales no estemos capacitados, por eso o aprendes debidamente hacerlo, o lo pones en manos de los expertos.
Repuestos y consumibles: Cada fabricante suele recomendar para reemplazar repuestos o reponer consumibles, de la marca original o de otras que sean socios comerciales, claro que por razones obvias recomendaran primeramente su marca, pero lo que realmente importa es que, a la hora de realizar un mantenimiento, utilicemos lo que podamos adquirir de mayor calidad, que garantice por mas tiempo superar la obsolescencia programada.

Elements to check daily

As owners we have the duty to make periodic revisions, they could be daily, or weekly, even monthly. We usually check those things that operate with consumables or that suffer wear and tear, which depend on a periodic supervision, to avoid surprises and breakdowns of a major nature, that is why according to what I learned, we can make the following daily checks in order:

• Check the condition of the exterior lights, since sometimes they may be imperceptible to the eye when driving, that is why we must make a detailed check on the outside of the vehicle, taking into account the rear lights, especially the low beam and brake lights, because being at the rear, they are the ones we usually forget the most.

Verificar el estado de las luces exteriores, ya que en ocasiones puede ser imperceptible al ojo al momento de conducir, es por eso que debemos hacer la verificación a detalle en el exterior del vehículo, tomando en cuenta las luces traseras, especialmente las luces de cruce y las de freno, porque al encontrarse en la parte posterior, son las que más solemos olvidar.

• The engine oil level is something that we must check daily, I know this is one of the details that most should always check, just remember to check color and viscosity, in addition to the level.

El nivel de aceite de motor es algo de que debemos verificar a diario, se que este es uno de los detalles que la mayoría debe verificar siempre, solo recuerden verificar color y viscosidad, además del nivel.

• It is also important to check the brake fluid level before starting a new trip with the vehicle, many of the accidents that occur due to brake failures are caused by being one of the least checked elements in the vehicle, do it daily even if you do not think it is necessary, your life and that of your family may depend on it.

También es importante revisar el nivel de líquidos de frenos antes de iniciar un nuevo recorrido con el vehículo, muchos de los accidentes que ocurren por fallas de freno se dan por sé uno de los elementos menos chequeados en el vehículo, hágalo a diario así no lo crea necesarios, de ello puede depender su vida y la de los suyos.

• The air pressure of the rubbers or tires is something that we must check daily, I must confess that it was not always my habit, but since the price of new tires rose a lot, I bought the pressure gauge and learned to do it daily and when they are cold, that is, they have not rolled yet.

La presión de aire de los cauchos o neumáticos es algo de que debemos revisar a diario, debo confesar que no siempre fue mi costumbre, pero desde que se elevó mucho el precio de los cauchos nuevos, compré el medidor de presión y aprendí hacerlo a diario y cuando están fríos, es decir, no han rodado aún.

Items to check monthly

On a monthly basis we must verify that which does not suffer immediate wear and tear or is a daily consumable, but which in the long term and due to continuous use suffer wear and tear and deterioration, among the things that I learned to program for a monthly review and maintenance we have:

Mensualmente debemos verificar aquello que no sufre un desgaste inmediato o es un consumible diario, pero que a largo plazo y por el uso continuo sufren desgaste y deterioro, entre las cosas que aprendí a programar para una revisión y mantenimiento mensual tenemos:

• All that works with rubber, especially the door frames that could well hide rust, and as a result water seepage to parts that should not contain it, and that in the future would require major brass work, for example, thanks to the execution of this maintenance and monthly review I could detect rust hidden under the rubber of one of the doors that gave way to the water and was deposited on the inside.

Todos lo que funciona con gomas, especialmente los marcos de las puertas que bien podrían esconder oxido, y como resultado filtración de agua a partes que no deben contenerla, y que en un futuro requerirían trabajos de latonería mayor, por ejemplo, gracias a la ejecución de este mantenimiento y revisión mensual pude detectar oxido escondido debajo de la goma de una de las puertas que daba paso al agua y se depositaba en la parte interior.

• The hydraulic oil level is one of those that we must evaluate monthly, personally I did not do it on a monthly basis, but it is vital that we do it in an established period, some prefer to do it weekly, which I think is very good, but doing it monthly is also sufficient.

El nivel de aceite hidráulico es uno de los que debemos evaluar mensualmente, en lo personal no lo hacia con orden de manera mensual, pero es vital que lo hagamos en un periodo establecido, algunos prefieren hacerlo semanal, lo cual me parece muy bueno, pero con hacerlo mensual también es suficiente.

• The operating condition of the parking brake is something that we do not always evaluate, I recently learned that we can test it in several ways, one is to apply it on a slope without any other brake, meaning by the gearbox or by the pedal, and being inside pay close attention to the sounds it emits, if it does so and remains static, it is fine. It can also be evaluated by applying the brake and putting the vehicle in motion, depending on the degree of resistance we can determine the presence of wear.

La condición de funcionamiento del freno de mano es algo que no siempre evaluamos, recientemente aprendí que podemos ponerlo a prueba de varias maneras, una es aplicarlo en una pendiente sin ningún otro freno, entiéndase por la caja de cambio o por el pedal, y estando dentro prestar mucha atención a los sonidos que emita, de hacerlo y permanecer estático, esta bien. También se puede evaluar aplicando el freno y poner el vehículo en marcha, depende el grado de resistencia podremos determinar la presencia del desgaste.

• The air conditioning ducts should receive monthly maintenance, and for this it is necessary to purchase consumables that collaborate with the cleaning of impurities and accumulation of spores and dust particles. After learning this detail buy a product that was recommended to me and turned out to be very favorable.

Los ductos de aire acondicionado deben recibir mantenimiento mensual, ya para esto es necesario la adquisición de consumibles que colaboren con la limpieza de impurezas y acumulación de esporas y partículas de polvo. Luego de conocer este detalle compre un producto que me recomendaron y resulto ser muy favorable.

• The one that was more difficult and if I needed the help of a mechanical workshop, is the adjustment of the front axle, I looked for a workshop where there was a lift bridge, and asked to adjust each of the parts, which suspended in the air without the weight of the vehicle, offer less resistance to the adjustment and you can better assess if the condition.

El que resulto más difícil y si necesite de la ayuda de un taller mecánico, es el ajuste del tren delantero, busque un taller donde hubiese puente elevadizo, y pedí ajustar cada una de las partes, que suspendidas en el aire sin el peso del vehículo, ofrecen menos resistencia al ajuste y se puede evaluar mejor si condición.

• Also monthly we must check the battery, even more if it is not maintenance free, which is not recommended. If you have a multimeter, it is possible to do it yourself, take the voltage of the battery and the one coming from the alternator, making sure that it receives enough voltage to maintain the voltage level above 12.4 V. A good sign of a need to change the battery is an abrupt voltage drop when turning on lights and air conditioning.

También mensualmente debemos revisar la batería, mas aun si no es de libre mantenimiento., lo cual es no recomendable. Para hacerlo es necesario la ayuda de instrumentos, si cuentas con un multímetro es posible hacerlo tu mismo, tomar el voltaje de la batería y el que viene del alternador, asegurándote que reciba el suficiente para mantener el nivel de voltaje sobre los 12.4 V. Una buena señal de necesidad de cambio de batería es una caída de tensión abrupta al encender luces y el aire acondicionado.
