Baby Gift in the Making…

Happy Monday!

I just had to share with you what I started working on over the weekend.

My neighbor is having a baby girl and she’s due in just a couple of weeks. I wanted to bless her with a cuddly crocheted gift for her newborn to snuggle with. I won’t get into the details of what I’m making in this post, you’ll have to wait until next week to see the final results. 😜

Today I’ll be talking about the yarn I used and why it’s my new found love.

I have always seen velvet yarn but never really cared to use it. Maybe because I didn’t have a project that called for it or underestimated how awesome it is.

I intentionally took the start of my project photo (cover photo) in front of all that cotton to express how soft and amazing this smooth velvety yarn is.

I honestly feel like I’m crocheting with clouds! ☁️☁️☁️

It’s a gentle treat to my hands because it’s so lightweight and easy to work with. The flow of my crocheting is going as smooth as the yarn feels. 🤩

I wish I would have given this a chance sooner but I’m glad I had this opportunity to work with it now. I recommend using this for baby projects because it will be so soft and comforting on their delicate and sensitive skin.

I love the fact that it comes in so many colors. I did notice that not all velvet yarns are created equal. Some velvets are not smooth or as soft as the one I purchased.

There were some that were rough and stiff to the touch and looked a little more rugged. I would definitely not use those kinds when making a gift for a baby.

I’ll give you a peek at the back of my first piece after adding stuffing to it…

Working with yarn that feels this way motivates me to finish my project. You all know how it gets sometimes when we start something and become uninterested. Knowing that I will be giving this to my neighbor is also keeping me excited about seeing this project through.

That’s it for today! I really look forward to revealing what I’m making and the finished product. I think I’ll be making this twice because my three year old daughter told me she wanted one 😆. She loves getting cozy with her stuffed animals at bedtime so I know she’ll love getting cozy with this one ~

All photos are my own and were taken with our Cannon EOS Rebel T6.

The review on velvet yarn is amazing, I haven't used it before but everyone says it's awesome, I may give it a try sometime soon.

The fact that your 3-years old already wants one tells me you're making something awesome, I can't wait to see the final result.

You should really give it a try. I can imagine you creating some awesome projects with it!

Haha I know. She kept hugging the yarn and rubbing it against her face. 🥰

Those yarns are so lovely and soft, aren't they, and so pleasant to work with!
I had a similar one, although I think it was meant to be faux fur, that I used for the ear warmer earlier in the year (or was it last year 😂). They are very snuggly, I loved wearing mine.

So lovely to make something for your neighbour's baby.

Your little daughter loves all these crocheted things, doesn't she? I wonder if she will fall in love with crocheting.

Yes they are very pleasant to work with. I think I'll keep a few colors on hand.

Oh yeah, I bet you love wearing those. I’ll have to think of something to make for myself to wear next Winter with this yarn.

Thank you. I know she likes handmade things so I couldn’t wait to find a project to start on.

You know what, I think she will fall in love with crocheting. She’s always curious to see what I’m making and asking me what certain things are. I would be delighted if she wants to crochet. 😃

Oh happy day! What a wonderful gift to celebrate a new life. Such a blessing. These type of gifts are by far the most special. You're so sweet @crosheille. And talented. I still wish I could have someone to teach me the basics - you're just a tad far ;)

I agree that these are the most special of gifts too. I would prefer a handmade gift over a store bought item any day lol. It makes you feel all warm inside and loved when you receive handmade.

Thank you so much. I love that you always appreciate my handiwork. I do hope you are able to learn as you hope one day ~

I can see the softness of the yarn on your photo, it really looks so delicate and I want to cuddle the photo (especially in the light colors). So nice you are making a gift for your neighbor and I am really curious what it will be (I at first thought it to be a toy mushroom :-D)

Oh good, mission accomplished! ✅
I really wanted to share the details so well that you could see for yourself how soft it is, yay!

That's a good guess ;)

Haha yes! I've been crocheting for about 11 years now. My next goal is to get comfortable with knitting.

Cross stitching is fun too! Whenever you do a project we'd love to see it here ;)

You totally should learn crocheting. It's so relaxing, stress relieving and very rewarding. I will warn you though, it could cause anxiety because you'll want to crochet most of what you see and won’t have that time for it all lol!

Thanks for stopping by ~

Hi. Congratulations because you will have a new neighbor 🤗.

I've seen beautiful knits with that velvet yarn, especially on large stuffed animals. I'm sure your project will look divine for baby's enjoyment. She will feel snuggled and happy.

I'm sure you use a very large crochet number. It must feel great to knit with chunky yarns. Just as you describe it, that's how it should be.

I will wait to see the result. Cheers.

Thank you @creacioneslelys! I surely hope it is something the baby will hold onto for awhile :)

Yes, you have to use a big enough hook for it to go smoothly. I also make sure I crochet a little bit looser than normal because it’s so delicate and the stitches look better that way too.

Cheers!! 😃

Crocheting with clouds

This is one of the best lines I have read in a while. So cool! It looks so comfy, I am sure that the baby will love it!

Thanks Mary! It was the best way I could describe what it felt like so you would know just how soft it is :D

Which material feels the softest? I have heard about cashmere, I have some clothing items made out of it, it is very soft as well .

Handmade baby stuff is such a great gift idea!

Hmmm…I’m thinking this velvet is softer. I say that because I believe it’s smoother and lighter than cashmere.

Hi @crosheille

I love knitting for baby and with this description that you share of the yarn, I have not had the opportunity to knit this type of yarn, I will surely do it, I am motivated with your description.

I am leaving you to enjoy the result of your creation, surely your neighbor will be very happy with the gift and her baby will be able to cuddle with it. I'm sure your little daughter will be anxious to have hers.

I take this opportunity to give you good news, my hand is quite recovered, it doesn't hurt so much anymore, I have knitted and it doesn't bother me; however I must be careful not to go backwards.

A big hug.

This kind of yarn is really nice to crochet, it so soft. This yarn is used here to crochet winter clothes for baby and also for pets.
I am glad you are enjoying this proyect because you'll have to repeat it for your little daughter 🤭 I know what is this because I have a lot of nieces and nephews.

I can see why they use it for winter clothing. This would definitely make nice warm clothes for sure.

You know what I’m making? 😳🤫😲👀😂

Oh no, I'm not sure it's your project, I was referring to the fact that I know what it's like to have to repeat projects because someone else wants the same one. Maybe I didn't express myself well.

Hi @crosheille.. looked nice and cuddly. I think we have some sold here in my country too.. but would it be easy for a newbie like me to crochet that kind of yarn?

Hey @devyleona!

I never want to limit anyone and say what you can't do but I will give you my honest opinion.

As I've been crocheting with it more I am noticing it does tend to shed, like a lot as you work with it. Not only would you have to focus on the tension of your stitches (to be sure it doesn't shred too much) but you'll also have to be good at finding and counting your stitches. With this yarn it’s not as easy to see them as clearly and that could be a challenge for a newbie.

But by all means if you want to grab some to give it a go then why not? If it’s difficult for you to work with now you can always set it aside for a later time when you’re more acquainted with crocheting ;)

The arrival of a new baby is always special for everyone... it's good that she is already receiving a lot of love from now on.

This yarn looks great, and the project for now looks like a little sheep... we'll find out soon 😅.

Greetings Crosheille, have a nice day ♥️.

It truly is special. I love gifting for new babies, it's so much fun and exciting.

Ah ha so you took a guess at it…I won’t say if you’re right or not 😆😄. We’ll see very soon hee hee!!

Velvet yarns are great for crochet at tight gauge, but don't try knitting with them at a relaxed gauge. Then the loops tend to "worm" and stick out and soon you have a mess. Crochet a firm fabric and those lovely soft velvet loops will stay put. Good job!

I can imagine it becoming a mess when knitting now that you've described it. I don't think I would ever feel comfortable knitting with this yarn, not at least until I can be consistent with keeping the correct gauge.

I am really loving how well it looks crocheted. Thanks so much ~
