Sydney Sweeney has invaded billboards in recent months. She stars in three films that have given everyone something to talk about (she's a producer on two of them) and that belong to very different genres: the romantic comedy Anyone but You, the disappointing Madame Web and the horror film Immaculate. But before these films and after rising to fame thanks to Euphoria and her small participation in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Sydney starred in an independent drama in which she left one of her best performances.

Reality is not just a noun, it's also the name of the protagonist of this story, Reality Winner (it seems like a made-up name, right?), a 25-year-old American girl who was arrested on June 3 2017 for leaking classified information to the press. The point is that although we know this from the trailer and the synopses available on the internet, the film manages to introduce the drama little by little. First some FBI officers arrive at Reality's house. Seeing her, a young, petite, blonde woman with a dog and a relaxed mood, we thought maybe there was a mistake or someone lied about her. This position is confirmed when we see that Reality responds to the interrogation calmly and there does not seem to be any compromising information. But then, little by little, we learn that the girl had been in the Air Force, that she is an American intelligence specialist, that she had access to classified information about different things and that - all the evidence points to it - she leaked classified documents to the media in the country. But what did the information say? In a few words, there's talk of an intervention by the Russian government in the 2016 presidential elections in the United States in which Donald Trump was elected. It's not just anything.

El punto es que aunque sabemos esto por el trailer y las sinopsis disponibles en internet, la película logra ir introduciendo el drama de a poco. Primero llegan unos oficiales del FBI a la casa de Reality. Al verla, una mujer joven, menuda, rubia, con un perro y un ánimo relajado, pensamos que tal vez haya un error o que alguien mintió sobre ella. Esta postura se confirma cuando vemos que Reality responde al interrogatorio con calma y no parece haber ninguna información comprometedora. Pero luego, poco a poco, nos vamos enterando de que la chica había estado en la Fuerza Aérea, que es una especialista en inteligencia estadounidense, que tenía acesso a información clasificada sobre diferentes cosas y que - todas las pruebas lo señalan - filtró documentos clasificados a un medio de comunicación del país. Pero, ¿qué fue lo que contó? En pocas palabras se habla de una intervención del gobierno ruso en las elecciones presidenciales de 2016 en los Estados Unidos en las que salió electo Donald Trump. No es cualquier cosa.

Sydney Sweeney as Reality Winner

The way Reality's life starts to reveal itself is great. Also, a point in the film's favor is that all the dialogue was taken directly from the FBI transcript of the interrogation. That is to say, we practically follow - almost in real time - the experience of Reality's interrogation with the same words that she used and that the FBI agents used.

First-time director Tina Satter had already adapted this story to the stage under the name Is This A Room and to prepare for the role, Sydney Sweeney watched Reality interviews and also spoke with her via Zoom (she is still serving her prison sentence) and this, added to the faithful transcription of the interrogation, gives tremendous veracity to the story. Furthermore, the topic is delicate: the interference of another country in the democratic process of a nation is something very compromising and something that is noticeable in the film is the collective regret that Reality is condemned for leaking that information when what was truly dangerous was have allowed this intervention or have discovered it and done nothing. So, of course the film also has its political content. One thing I liked about the script, written by Tina Satter herself along with James Paul Dallas, is that since the FBI transcript had silences (crossed out words) the film makes the sender of those words disappear for just a second so that we know that something is missing, but without the need to fill that space with speculation. The film is almost entirely shot in what would be Reality's home and the good performances of all those who participate mean that nothing more than those lines, those dialogues and that central drama are needed to keep the viewer's attention for just over eighty minutes.

La directora debutante, Tina Satter, ya había adaptado esta historia al teatro con el nombre de Is This A Room y para prepararse para el papel, Sydney Sweeney vio entrevistas de Reality y también habló con ella vía zoom (aún cumple su condena en prisión) y ello sumado a la transcripción fiel del interrogatorio otorga una veracidad tremenda a la historia. Además, el tema es delicado: la injerencia de otro país en el proceso democráctico de una nación es algo muy comprometedor y algo que se nota en el film es el lamento colectivo de que se condene a Reality por filtrar esa información cuando lo verdaderamente peligroso era haber permitido esa intervención o haberla descubierto y no hacer nada. Así que, por supuesto la película tiene también su contenido político. Una cosa que me gustó del guión, escrito por la propia Tina Satter junto a James Paul Dallas, es que como la transcripción del FBI tenía silencios (palabras tachadas) la película hace desaparecer al emisor de esas palabras durante apenas un segundo para que sepamos que algo falta, pero sin la necesidad de rellenar ese espacio con especulaciones. La película está casi enteramente rodada en lo que sería la casa de Reality y las buenas actuaciones de todos quienes participan hacen que no haga falta nada más que esas líneas, esos diálogos y ese drama central para mantener la atención del espectador durante poco más de ochenta minutos.

And among the performances we must highlight that of the protagonist, Sydney Sweeney, who manages to embody the complex personality of Reality Winner, a woman who works for the government, but who questions the management of information and the ignorance of the public, someone who has a pet and does yoga, but he also carries firearms, was in the air force and wants to work in Afghanistan. Sydney was fantastic in this role.
