Sunday Mass: Landayan Church
Sunday Mass: Landayan Church
It was Sunday morning and my boyfriend's cousin asked him if he knew where Landayan Church is located. He answered yes because we go there from time to time to attend mass. So his cousin asked him if we could accompany him and his girlfriend. We both agreed since it's Sunday and we're going to attend mass anyway.
I am a Roman Catholic along with 85% (according to google) of the population of our country, Philippines. And every Sunday we are encouraged to attend mass though it is not compulsory. I think I attend mass partly because of social responsibility. It has been drilled to me at a young age that Sunday is to give thanks to God. And partly because of my belief for Him.
Anyway, the mass was scheduled at 6PM so we strated our travel around quarter to 5PM. The church was just two rides away from our apartment though it was located on the neighboring town.
We rode the classic transportation in our country, the jeepney. It's like a mini bus but instead we ride it horizontally in two rows and we sit along with each other.
Within 35 minutes, we arrived in Landayan a barangay in the next town. I used to come here with my mom in my younger years every Friday. I used to love it here because before we get to the actual church we would pass a lot of stores selling different stuff from rice cakes to toys and clothes.
I love it here. The walk made me feel nostalgic of my younger years. We even do Alay Lakad (it's like a sacrifice walk from your house to the church) before during lenten season in this church.
After 10 minute or so, we arrived at the church. And it was like the pandemic is over from the throngs of people inside. Though they still strictly implement social distancing.
The Landayan Church is a famous church because of Lolo Oweng, a replica of the Black Nazarene. The statue is said to be miraculous because a lot devotees said he cured people or give wishes of those who prays to him. Sadly I didn't get a chance to take a picture of him. The viewing line is still off limits.
Aside from the statue of Lolo Oweng, there's also a famous river in the area that is said to have healing powers. People from far places go to the river to take bath and fetch water to drink. Some people even outs it in gallon to take home.
The mass ended after an hour and holy water is sprinkled to the mass attendees.
Outside I saw some candles in the shape of human being sold. When I was young, I thought people used it to curse people in some voodoo magic. Later I found out that it was for someone's good health. And there are a lot of candles and each color represents something like wealth, health, love and more.
We did some sightseeing before going home. We entered some stores and bought stuffs.
Over all it was lovely Sunday. I do love visiting this place. It brings back good memories.
That's all for today. Thank you. Peace out! ✌️
I am Catholic too, and I am truly amazed by the church and the said healing power of the replica of Black Nazarene and the river. I hope I can go there too. ♥️
