Land Shanty
journeying through desert sea
with land as dry and parched as me
I chanced upon a shapely mound
and wondered what it was I'd found
such craftsmanship to be admired
intricacies indeed inspired
geology and earthly art!
(though time had taken it apart)
who had made this masterpiece?
and what exactly was this beast?
I pondered just how long it took
and went in for a closer look
I sensed familiarity
in curves and lines that I could see
the shape was one I recognized
but here? I doubted my own eyes
but there it was! the answer, clear
anchored to a sandstone pier
waiting eons to embark
a fine and stately ancient ark
I searched for life inside the hold
too old for bones, to dry for mold
its history long-since dissolved
its failures long-since absolved
I think that when my time arrives
I will come back, and climb inside
as ash and dust and desert sand
and sail into the promised land

The details in that are so pretty. Love that it’s partnered with a poem as well. :D
Thank you! It was such an unusual formation to find out there in the desert. Worthy of songs.
Nice poem 😃
Thanks!
Intresting landscapes -- and I love how it matches with this dangerous promising dark sky.
Thank you!
Wow, a masterpiece of nature!
Thank you, says the nature!

We've got an ark here in Kentucky but unfortunately it's not in some secret spot in the desert.
You been listening to sea shanties again?
Are there even any secret desert spots in Kentucky?
Only on land.
Thanks for the boost!!
Do strip mines count?
Sure! While we're at it we can count strip clubs so I can get a little desert here in Portland.
Very fine writing!
Why thank you my good man!
Next level location!!!
Thanks!
Wowsas! What a stunning find. I love the way you wrote this. I can see the ark. I'm really into stone, so this is fascinating to see. Is it all sandstone, or are there any other types of stone there?
I had to look at the area because of your post and I saw this. I'd get lost there exploring.
Damn it you just made me want to go back!!!!
I think it's all sandstone but I'm not super geologically informed, so there may have been other types of rock as well.
I peed near it. So did Pilot.
LOL! Pretty stunning area. I had to look it up on a map to see the terrain that way also. These things are an endless fascination for me. You sure live in a beautiful spot with so many cool places not that far from you (yes, I studied the map profusely, gotta get all the states clearly mapped in my mind). If you can go back, go for it, I want more pics and video if you can manage it, LOL!
It looks to be primarily sandstone. The layers are wild. Some of it makes me think of tree bark. I'm not a geologist either, but carving stone has resulted in closer study of it, since I'm a rockhound too.
Territory marking! LOLOLOL! You reminded me of another story but I'll save that one for a post because I have decent pics!
LOL I didn't even think of it as territory marking, more like being wild with the earth. Ha!
I have sooooo many more photos to go through.
I like your way of seeing it. My friend is male, so hahahaha, that's why I thought of territory marking. Women don't think in terms of territory, unless it's their children, at least from what I've observed.
I am so looking forward to seeing them.
I just have to share this and thiswith you so you can hear a cardinal singing. It's very distinctive to my ear. One woke me up early this week with their song (delightful) and another was singing away a few hours ago as I worked on my garden. Now, if only, if only one would cooperate at the right time for my camera so I could get decent shots.
You've got me going on birds big time. Yesterday, saw a common blackbird in the tree beside my balcony (not cooperative for camera, again). There are also sparrows here by the boatload, sometimes they land and sing on my balcony (a treat). I plan on keeping my eye out to see if I can get some bird photos. Pidgeon's are easier, since on the ground a lot here. I did get some really interesting bird related photos a week ago, but have to put together in a post. Been so tied up with things the last couple months that I've slacked on posting.
That redhead has a pretty voice!! They look and sound almost tropical, hard to believe they can handle all that winter. Birds amaze me. I'm glad you're getting back into them! They seem almost separate from the rest of the animal kingdom.
I hadn't thought of them as tropical sounding, but now that you mention it, I can hear that in their song. Birds fly, seems magical to me (forget flying bugs). They are different. I think I've wanted to fly since forever, so there's that too.
It's an inspiring place. Great colours, steel sky and golden sand.
Thank you (on behalf of the land). One of those places that I didn't want to leave but take comfort in knowing I will return to again.
It does look chassis of a boat. That Added an eccentric vibe to the Shanty. Your interpretation made it more beautiful.
