Waterfall Walk
Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to share some pictures of a place that the little man and I went fishing recently!
Waterfall Walk
One of the things I love the most about fishing is being outside in nature, where we are really meant to be. Granted, I despise the fucking mosquitoes that slaughtered me when I was there, but that's besides the point. Thankfully the mosquitoes didn't harass the little man as much as they did me, so I am fortunate about that one lol.
With the annoying element aside though, it's a lot of fun when we are out in the various areas that are decent fishing zones! This one is one that I've been meaning to visit for a while, it was recommended by my dad and some family members because they said the fishing here is incredible. The only tough part is the drive is a bit longer than I like to go for some of the fishing, but that's okay. We have to make some small sacrifices if we want to be able to experience things, I reckon!
The place here is located at the connection point between one reservoir to another. A bigger reservoir dumps into a smaller one and that means there are a number of waterfalls that are along the route. The last one before the river dumps into the destination reservoir is where the fishing is apparently very good, and where the little man and I were spending the day.
The place looks beautiful on many fronts at least! That's one of the first things that I noticed and really appreciated. I know that it's a little annoying not to be able to use my waders or use a canoe or kayak on the water here but the water is incredible clear and very well kept, so that's just something we can deal with, for the benefits it brings us on the fishing front! They have on one of the sides, this really long and maintained trail. I think they mow it but they thankfully maintain it for the people who enjoy fishing here. It's a nice long path from one end of the connection point to the other.
The river is freaking COLD that's for sure. I was really surprised that in the end of July, that the water would be as cold as it was! That's a good thing though, especially for people who are looking to snag some trout or salmon. They have both here which is amazing and definitely one of the reasons that we are going to be coming back when the water level comes down a bit. There was a guy when we were there, one of the locals, and he said the water was up 5 feet because of all the rain we've been getting. That doesn't surprise me at all, because there has indeed been an insane amount of rain lately lol I'm hoping that we can get a drier spell the rest of the summer so that the rivers and lakes can go down in their water level, we don't get any crazy flood damage from them being as high as they are, and we also get to have more fun fishing! The fishing is what has really been a killer. The largemouth bass just aren't as interested in being active with the water temperatures this cold.
The other cool thing about this spot is that it had some very surprising wild edibles! Someone planted a grape vine here, and it was doing quite well lol. I was trimming the branches of the various plants around us so that we can have an easier time fishing when I looked up to cut a branch and saw this grape vine! I was quite excited but knew that this year wouldn't be a good year to eat them. The frost we had in May, which wasn't a normal thing, has damaged the fruits like the grapes in the region, as well as the pitted fruits like peaches, nectarines, cherries and others. I'm hoping that we get a decent year from the CSA that we signed up for, because last year and the year before the pitted fruits were incredible to enjoy!
With the water level as high as it was, it was also difficult to fish some incredible structure! This bridge here is one that is absolutely going to be a goldmine for fishing once we can get the water under control. I know that there are some hogs lurking around it and the three tunnels that lead between the bottom of the river and the spill out into the reservoir to the right. We even had an old lady driving by that stopped us for a minute to chat and she recommended that we try down here. It was great to hear and see someone offer that. I know that I enjoy sharing those types of pieces of information with folks when I see them as we are leaving a spot or something, to try and help 'em out. If we can get a solid 2 or 3 weeks of no rain and mostly sunshine, I know we can get the water levels down to where this area is fishable. Sadly, as I'm writing this we had a crazy batch of thunderstorms for a few hours that dropped a few inches of rain down onto us lol there goes that 3 week thought!

Hell yes. Reminds me of the river. That's what we call it. Colorado River, it's called on a map. Only fluctuates 3 degrees—the river. 67-69 I think it was.
But, the hotter it is outside.. Brisk is the word for it.
That's cool, I know of the name for the river but don’t know where it is so I’ll have to figure it out lol. That’s a good temp though because in the heat, it’s nice to cool down!
such a beautiful spot, fishing is very popular in NZ and many of my family and friend slove fishing, I just never got into it, standing in one spot hoping a fish bites just doesnt work for me I am too hyper and like ot keep moving lOL
Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk :)
Hahaha yeah it's a little different. We move around a bit for our spots which is good, switches things up. When you’re on a good fish though, it’s exhilarating for sure! My son and I tend to move around to different spots in the location we are at to See how things go. This one here had 5 different corners to fish at so we were hopping around. My son can’t sit still which is fine lol
I have a brother in Law who loves fishing, his favorite spot is a 2 day hike to get to, stays there two days and hikes back out, now the hike i would have loved LOL
Hahaha well that’s a little too intense for me! Good for him though lol
Hi! It sounds like you had a great time fishing with your little man! The place you described sounds beautiful, and I can see why you'd want to go back. I'm sorry to hear that the water was so cold, but I'm sure it'll be worth it when it warms up a bit.
I also love that you found some wild edibles! Grapes are one of my favorite fruits, so I would have been excited to find a grape vine growing wild. I'm sorry to hear that the frost damaged the grapes this year, but I'm sure you'll still enjoy the fruit from your CSA.
Yeah it was an awesome place and the cold water didn't bother me too much, it just means that the fish are going to be more on the side of cold water species like salmon, trout and others. That's okay in my book!
The grapes were a really cool find and I know that we will be back next year to enjoy a little snacking around the same time, eating the wild blackberries was nice!
