Technological Reliance Thoughts
Hi fellow Ranters,
Today I wanted to chat a little bit about how reliant we are on various forms of technology, even simple ones!
Technological Reliance Thoughts
Who would have thought that cooling your house down would be such a wonderful and revolutionary technology?
This has recently crossed my mind. With the wonderful invention by the dude that was last named Carrier in the early 1900's, having air conditioning is by far one of the best things that we could have hoped for. Heating is certainly important but that seems like cave man shit when it comes to living in our modern times where we are inside mostly and for those of us who work indoors, and also work from home, air conditioning is crucial for the easy ability to work productively.
That all is fine and dandy but then you get a fucking curve ball and your air conditioning stops working! Damn, that's a kick in the nuts!
We've had pretty good luck with many of the things in our life from an appliance standpoint so that's been really nice. That's allowed us to save a little bit of money that's for sure, because there's nothing worse than buying something new then having it break, and having to get another one. That really makes some damage to the finances lol.
The challenge we have now is trying to find someone to come over and fix it! We have some folks that we know that helped us in the past but we gave them a call and they aren't getting back to us which is difficult. I don't really like to have to go out and find someone off the internet to come and fix something at our house. We've done it and it's been relatively okay but it's always better to have referrals from someone you know instead of someone you've never met! I know that there are definitely exceptions to that rule and it can be potentially beneficial these days with the internet and review websites but none of it us guaranteed.
We aren't sure if the situation that we've encountered is caused by negligence or what. We had a neighbor who had their AC unit worked on and of course the AC unit was in the same location as ours, as there are several in that section. We are hoping that someone didn't accidentally step on ours and screw it up, leaking the coolant out into the air or something slowly over time. I try not to be the paranoid type, but these coincidences don't often happen, so we suspect that it was something foolish like that. Almost impossible to prove it though, so we can't really do a whole lot on that front sadly.
We're hoping that we can get it squared away though, because this week is set to be a pretty hot one, with temps reaching the 90's for a few days! Not the worst thing but it does make for an uncomfortable time sleeping hahaha. Ah well, such is life. It throws curve balls at you and you just have to figure out how to hit it to get it knocked out.

I can definitely relate to your frustration. Air conditioning is such a lifesaver in the summer, and it's really tough when it stops working. I'm glad to hear that you've had good luck with your appliances in the past, and I hope that you're able to find someone to fix your AC unit soon.
I know you're not a fan of finding someone off the internet, but it might be your best bet in this case. You can try searching for reviews on different websites, or you can ask your friends and family for recommendations.
In this case we thankfully didn’t need to find someone on the internet. My wife’s family member was able to come over and fix it, and we’ve got him coming back in the autumn to help us with routine maintenance of the unit. It was an easy fix, someone was working on another unit and accidentally shut ours off but didn’t tell us so it wouldn’t restart properly. We learned more about the unit though which is great!
